by The Editors on May 21, 2008

The City of Carlsbad’s TGIF: Jazz In The Park Series has mostly left Carlsbadistan for the 2008 season which is kind of a bummer (no more walking to the shows), but truthfully, we don’t need those inland crowds cluttering up our streets anyway.

This year the 10 events shared among Stagecoach Park, Poinsettia Park, and Calavera Hills Park. The first concert is on Friday June 20 with the Debbie Davies Band at Stagecoach Park.

Follow the jump for all the other details and we will keep you posted all summer long.

Street Faire Another “Success”

by The Editors on May 5, 2008

z2925f45a58d4e2b888257440001032c1.jpgWe didn’t make it to the Carlsbad Street Faire this year, but we know tens of thousands did because we heard the streets of Carlsbadistan were lined with cars, again.

Luckily, for all of us, the North County Times was there.

Now in its 34th year, the street fair is, according to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, the largest one-day street fair in the nation, boasting more than 100,000 visitors.

“It’s actually so popular that we get calls from out of state from people who’ve been to it before and want to plan their vacation around it,” said Angela Holman, director of communications for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the event.

Funny thing: we planned our vacation around it, too. But we planned to be gone. Let us know if we missed anything good.

Street Faire Sunday In Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on April 30, 2008

Sf May

Hard to believe it’s already been six months since the last Carlsbad Street Faire, but don’t kid yourself. Time flies.

On Sunday, May 4, 2008 expect to see the streets of Carlsbadistan shut down so traveling QVC salespeople can clutter our Village with push-up tents filled with junk of all shapes and sizes. Get out early and load up. And don’t forget the beer garden. Because it’s usually the safest place to stand in the whole faire. Plus, in the beer garden you won’t have to worry about tripping over any neon coyote doorstops with macramé tails.

Carlsbad Mankinis At Coachella

by The Editors on April 28, 2008

Carlsbdistanian’s Patrick Hoyny and Matt Hultberg, along with two friends from Vista, represented the Village well at the Coachella Music Festival this year by cruising the grounds in matching Vans, colored socks, hip-packs, and Speedos, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“These are not Speedos,” clarified Hernandez, 29. “They’re male bikinis. We’re not endorsing Speedos.” . . . “Unless,” said Huerta, 24, “they want to pay us.”

“We’re here for us!” Hultberg declared. “We’re the best thing here this year … except for Prince.”

We’re guessing we’ll be seeing more of this on the beach this summer.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Writer In Carlsbad

by The Editors on April 25, 2008

Amsline2-1By 5:15 PM yesterday the line for tickets to see popular fiction writer and Carlsbad Reads author Alexander McCall Smith snaked across the front of Carlsbad’s Dove Library, around the corner, and all the way into the back of the parking lot.

“This is like a rock concert or something,” one woman said as she and her friends searched for the end of the line.

And she would have been right if rock concerts were attended almost exclusively by women in their late 50s to early 60s. Something about McCall Smith’s easy reading novels captures a demographic that Tolstoy might have described as “women who are not yet old.”

Amc1

By 7 PM everyone with a ticket had filed into the the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and the George and Patricia Gowland Meeting room where the overflow audience could watch the lecture on closed circuit TV. When the stage curtains parted there was the jolly Scot Alexander McCall Smith in his suit jacket, tie, and kilt. Exactly as most everyone expected.

Some who have heard McCall Smith speak say he is one of the most entertaining, enlightening speakers they have heard and that his lecture should not be missed.

Tickets to the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium event will be distributed first-come first-served starting at 6 PM, however, library staff claim “you’ll have to come much earlier than that if you expect to get in.”

Bring a chair and a couple McCall Smith books and join the lit line party.
