The full service grocery store. . . giving a pre-selected shopping bag of free groceries to the first 200 people who arrive (with no purchase necessary). “In these tough economic times, that’s sure to attract a good number of people who need some help,” says Janet Little, Henry’s Farmers Market’s nutritionist and spokesperson. . . Grand opening ceremonies take place at 7:45 AM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the public and executives from Henry’s, as well as local civic officials, all with official proclamations.

And if your first name is Henry (and you can prove it) you get a free deli sandwich.

Batiquitos Lagoon Restoration Success

by The Editors on August 24, 2009

Uti1422918 T350-1According to a Michael Burge story in the San Diego Union-Tribune a 517-page report released last week on the call the rehabilitation efforts at Carlsbadistan’s Batiquitos Lagoon “a milestone project in environmental restoration.”

“Overall, the enhancement of Batiquitos Lagoon should be viewed as a huge success,” says the report by Merkel & Associates, a biological consulting firm in San Diego. . . “I think it’s been an incredible success,” said Ralph Appy, the director of environmental management for the Port of Los Angeles, which put up $57 million to restore the lagoon and maintain it as a swap for environmental damage at the port in San Pedro.

We can’t disagree. The trail along the Northern edge of the lagoon is one of our favorite places to escape hustle of Carlsbadistan and dive into the wilderness. And to think, we owe it all to an ecological disaster in San Pedro. If destroying LA means more habitat restoration for Carslbadistan, we’re all for it. . .

by The Editors on August 24, 2009

Snyder Art 2009

Not that anyone would have to go to Bryan Snyder’s gallery to see his art, as it seems to have been showing up all over Carlsbadistan for the past couple years, but for those who don’t get to see it as much as we do, Bryan has “created, organized, and promoted” his own show (catered by the makers of Carlsbadistan’s best fish tacos Senor Grubby’s) on Saturday August 29, 2009 at Snyder Art from 7 to 9 PM at 2695 State St, Carlsbad, CA.

For more information contact Snyder Art at 760/521-8713 or Snyderart2009.com

Legoland Fireworks From The Sheraton

by The Editors on August 23, 2009

082309 14

For the second week in a row we snuck up to the Carlsbad Sheraton for an epic view of the Legoland fireworks at 8:30 PM on Saturday night. From the lower parking lot we could see the fireworks from the ground to the sky and be so close we could almost feel them exploding overhead.

Definitely a great way to kick off an evening in Carlsbadistan, but next Saturday night August 29, 2009 at 8:30 PM is the last fireworks show for the summer. Don’t miss it.

More Illegal Aliens Intercepted at Ponto

by The Editors on August 21, 2009

Apparently, Carlsbadistan’s Ponto Beach is becoming a regular stop on the panga tour of Northside. On July 17, 2009, 20 “mexican nationals” were arrested after being dropped off by boat at Ponto. The boat and drivers, oddly enough, got away.

This morning, August 21, 2009, the entire scene was reenacted all over again, according to The US Customs and Border Protection website.

Early this morning, agents on patrol spotted a vessel, described as a panga boat, as it was traveling towards the shoreline of Ponto Beach in Carlsbad. The vessel dropped off 18 males and five females before fleeing the area. The subjects were quickly apprehended by Border Patrol agents with the assistance of Carlsbad police officers. The illegal aliens were taken into Border Patrol custody and sent to a Border Patrol station for processing . . . The United States Coast Guard and CBP Air and Marine units conducted a search of the area but were unable to locate the vessel.

Nice to know that pangas (and their captains) can just flow in and out of the country without ever getting caught, isn’t it? Just think if these boats arriving at Ponto Landing were filled with something more dangerous than simply men and women eager to work hard at bad jobs?

Water System Testing August 24

by The Editors on August 21, 2009

Carlsbad Municipal Water District will be doing testing on their system on Monday August 25, 2009. So they want everyone to know that there may be some water pressure issues during their tests.

During the testing, water customers might notice a slight decrease in water pressure. Testing in each location will only last about five minutes. Tap water where testing is being done might temporarily look a little cloudy as well. . . During the testing water district staff will use the minimum amount of water necessary to gather the required information. Water released from pipes and hydrants will be dechlorinated and discharged into the nearest storm drain, in compliance with state and federal environmental regulations.

Looks like we’ll be sticking to our Arrowhead Mountain Spring water for a couple days. For questions or more information, please call 760-438-7100.
