Chalk Another One Up For Art Splash

by The Editors on September 21, 2008

Jennifer2

We learned last year that if we wanted to see any of the Carlsbad Art Splash transitory chalk art in it’s completed form we’d have to visit on Sunday afternoon. This year we did, however, artists like Jennifer (pictured above) and many others were still hard at work on their pieces knowing full well that they art they were creating would be gone by sunrise.

Rotary“We have to get all this cleaned up by midnight tonight, because they’re driving on this in the morning,” said Mary Beth McFaul (pictured left) while she worked on the Rotary Club art piece.

Obviously, the dozens of artists working on the street enjoy the process over the permanence and that’s part of what makes Art Splash so much fun for the thousands of visitors who strolled up and down Armada Drive this weekend.

It wasn’t all spectating. In the Family Art Carnival (below) families were given a square and tools to make their own chalk paintings, make hats out of newspaper, or learn the ancient art of origami.

Post Office Partys Like It’s 9-20-08

by The Editors on September 20, 2008

String1

Our favorite Carlsbadistan letter carrier Conrad Beck organized a a pretty big party at the Carlsbad Post Office today to celebrate that fact that today’s date (9-20-08) also happens to be our zip Code.

92008 AmWhile Mayor Bud Lewis did not make the festivities as promised, nearly 70 people along with the Carlsbad Lancer Cheerleaders, Miss Carlsbad Dana Ducommon, the Army & Navy Academy Atkinson Warrior Marching Band and some of Carlsbad’s most appreciated postal workers (and family) did.

Lorraine Ludowsky, Sheila Mata, Lola’s Connie Trejo, Michelle, Michael Januzzi (starting center for the CHS football team), Cathy Kardas, the Post Office’s most senior employee Mack Mata, the youngest carrier C.C. Vallejo, Mike Alston, and Sharra Kliebenstein helped Conrad count-down to the big event at 9:20:08 AM.

Then it was all silly string and music from the Army & Navy Academy Atkinson Warrior Marching Band, free cake, and for a dollar all the philatelists in the crowd could get a special commemorative postcard with a custom cancellation stamp.

The 71 Percent Carlsbad Music Festival

by The Editors on September 19, 2008

Musicfestival CbThe Fifth Annual Carlsbad Music Festival kicks off tonight in. . . well, in Los Angeles with Calder Quartet, Red Fish Blue Fish, and Build. Weird, huh?

And the third concert at The Loft on the campus of UCSD September 25, 2008 is only open to UCSD students. Seems like organizers really should call this the 71% Carlsbad Music Festival.

For those who aren’t interested in making the trek to LA or currently students at UCSD the festival actually begins in Carlsbad on Monday September 22, 2008 at the New Village Arts Theatre with Build, Tristan Perich, and Favian Svensson.

The musicians of the Carlsbad Music Festival will perform a split set of music by composers-in-residence, Tristan Perich and Fabian Svensson. Build, led by composer/violinist Matt McBane, performs a full set of original music featuring music from their recent release self-titled debut album. This marks festival’s first collaboration with New Village Arts Theatre in their Carlsbad Village black box theater. Seating is limited.

Seeing as this is music we’re not familiar with we may have to go check it out. Ticket are ($28 Priority, $18 General, $10 Student) and can be purchased by clicking here.

For more info follow the jump for the rest of the dates and players.

Art Splash Gets Tasty This Weekend

by The Editors on September 18, 2008

As-Semic

Carlsbadistan’s Armada Drive is in for a serious chalking on September 20-21, 2008 as artists lay down some amazing transitory art on the pavement during the two-day Art Splash festival. This event is to benefit arts in the local community and is a great way to spend the day with the family.

Last year’s popular Karl Strauss Beer Garden will be back along with the all-new Bellefleur Wine Gardenso everyone will have the chance to drink a smile on their faces.

Sing With Alice Parker Tonight

by The Editors on September 18, 2008

ApCarlsbadistan’s St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church is hosting the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus’s presentation of The Alice Parker Festival tonight (September 18, 3008), and they’re calling it a “once in a lifetime choral event.” Seeing as we haven’t had many “choral events” in our lifetime, that statement is most likely true.

“Alice has been one of the most beloved and revered figures in choral music for half a century,” continues Chase. “We are very pleased to present this Festival, which I recommend to anybody, at any level, who loves vocal music. I guarantee it will be a musical experience like none other, and choir singers and audience alike will feel musically gratified.”

So, if you appreciate group singing of a spiritual bent, this might be a perfect evening. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for “youngsters 18 and under.”

[Editors’ Note: If anyone attends this event based on seeing it here, please let us know in the comments.]

The Force Is With Legoland This Weekend

by The Editors on September 12, 2008

Starwars Image

It’s all Star Wars at Legoland on Saturday September 13 -14, 2008 as the 501st Legion of Rebel Forces storms Legoland. While normally we wouldn’t recommend encouraging your children to hang out with grown men dressed like Storm Troopers and Wookies, we’re pretty sure this will be a fun day at the park for all Star Wars fans.

Legoland guests need not travel to a galaxy far, far away to take part in out-of-this-world fun activities like the Droid Hunt, video game battles, trivia competitions and Clone Trooper scavenger hunts. Whether they favor the Dark Side or support Luke Skywalker’s cause, guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars characters and participate in daily costume contests for a chance to win prizes valued at more than $500!

These are definitely the droids you are looking for. Follow the jump for all the details.

Carlsbad Brings Home World Bodysurfing Title

by The Editors on August 25, 2008

Toobed3

The world’s best bodysurfers were at the Oceanside Pier over the weekend competing in the 32st Annual World Bodysurfing Championship and guess who won the women’s division? 16-year-old Krista Johnson of Carlsbadistan, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Yesterday’s one-to three-foot waves weren’t optimal and made it more difficult to do tricks. Competitors were judged on their ride length, wave size, style and difficulty of the maneuvers. They swam in sets of six, each getting 15 minutes of competition, with their top three rides counting.

Bodysurfing: the purist’s sport. Congrats, Krista, for yet another reminder that Carlsbad kicks all over Oside.

After a few words from Library Director Heather Pizzuto and comments from members of the City Council, at about 10:30 AM on August 23, 2008 Mayor Pro Tem Ann Kulchin cut the ribbon to officially open Carlsbad City Library’s newest addition: The Learning Center at 3368 Eureka Place.

Img 5039-1Close to 200 people were on hand for the celebration and the tour of the facilities that followed.

The Library Learning Center is both the new home of the Centro de Información and the Adult Learning Program, as well as a warm, comfortable community gathering place where life-long learning is supported for all ages.

The Learning Center will provide public computer and Internet access, computer classes for adults and students, literacy tutoring for adults, Homework assistance for students, study rooms, space for special events and a Spanish, English and bilingual library collection including books, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs for people of all ages.

Everyone involved with this project (The City of Carlsbad Staff, The Library Board of Trustees, The Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation, Friends of the Carlsbad Library, Manuel Oncina Architects, Inc, and Telacu Construction) should be extremely proud. The building is attractively designed on the outside and more importantly on the inside.

For a photo tour of the new facility, please follow the jump (and remember to click the images to see the full size).
