SDG&E Knocks Out The Lights

by The Editors on April 15, 2008

Outage 11 17 14If you’re wondering why all the clocks on your appliances were blinking today when you got home, it’s because at approximately 11:08 AM Carlsbadistan power went out thanks to a “suspected problem in the overhead electric system” on circuits AG01 and 0781 according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

Nearly 4,500 SDG&E customers were effected by the morning outage. (Click the image at right for full detail.)

These kinds of outages make it very difficult for us to catch up on the latest episode of The Hills.

Giant Sloth Fossil Found In Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on April 14, 2008

Met-Sloth2-280First it was the Mastodon fossil found at El Camino Real and Canon Road. Now, a second discovery has been made at the new Robertson Ranch development.

Late last month, paleontologists monitoring the excavation of Robertson Ranch, which is being developed for homes, spotted a skeleton of a giant ground sloth as earthmovers were grading. . . “We know we have part of a pelvis, part of a front leg and part of a back leg,” Deméré said of the sloth discovery. “There were two ribs we could see and part of a vertebra. . . . They’d been held together a couple of hundred thousand years by mudstone.”

While this giant sloth roamed the Carlsbadistan area approximately 120,000 to 200,000 years ago, experts believe it was likely not one of Mayor Bud Lewis‘ pets.

Golf Biz In Rough: What About Callaway?

by The Editors on April 14, 2008

Steven Russolilo of the Dow Jones Newswires checks in with Callaway Golf. Will the company’s “relatively wealthy customers” save it from the perils of a tanking golf market?

The consumer wasn’t super strong last year, yet Callaway couldn’t keep its $499 driver in stock because there was such high demand for it,” said Bill Chappell, an analyst at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey Inc. Callaway’s 2007 net sales rose 10 percent, to a record $1.12 billion. . . . Despite Callaway’s growth drivers, its sales could take a hit as consumers struggle with rising gas prices and paying their mortgages. . . . It’s very easy for a consumer to say they have enough golf clubs sitting in their garage that they may realize they don’t need a new set of Callaways,” said John Shanley, an analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group.

While reading this story we were reminded that market analysts are professional guessers. But yet, we all seem to care what they have to say when it comes to business. Why is that?

Ten Minutes Ago In Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on April 13, 2008

North 041208

The only way things can get any better than this is if the water would warm up a little. Otherwise, another perfect day in Carlsbadistan. We’d say “Wish You Were Here,” however, from the crowd on the beach (and the car-lined streets) we’d say you already are. (Click the photo to see if full size.)

Mike Little 1, Marty Ummel 0

by The Editors on April 10, 2008

When Carlsbad’s Marty Ummel decided to sue her Real Estate Agent Mike Little because she felt she had paid too much for her home, most thought she was crazy. Now a North County jury has agreed with them, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

North County real estate agent who was sued by a Carlsbad couple for allegedly duping them into overpaying for their $1.2 million home was vindicated Thursday by a Superior Court jury that found the Realtor had not failed his clients. . . The 10-woman, two-man jury wasted no time deliberating, arriving at a unanimous verdict within two hours.

The jury forewoman Wendi Bricks said that ultimate responsibility for the price of the house rested with the Ummels because they signed the contract. Well Marty, it was a great effort.

Putting The Tan in Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on April 10, 2008

Omnilux-Banner

Photo Therapeutics Inc., a Carlsbad-based company that claims to be the world leader in light therapy has teamed up with ETS Tan, an Indianapolis-based company to create “the first indoor tanning bed that features FDA-cleared, clinically proven light therapy technology to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate skin in the face and neck areas,” according to a press release.

The Rejuvasun with Omnilux is a commercial-grade spa bed that now features FDA-cleared, medically proven light therapy panels. Consumers have the option to experience full-body tanning and light therapy sessions for the face and neck areas simultaneously, tanning sessions alone or light therapy sessions alone.

Now if they could just merge this whole contraption with a computer monitor then we could sit here typing all day getting tanner and younger looking by the minute.

Water Quality Board Gives Desal A Kinda

by The Editors on April 10, 2008

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board has “approved an environmental protection plan for the desalination plant,” by a vote of 5-2.

The board voted 5-2 yesterday to approve Poseidon’s first draft of its proposed plan but required it to return in six months with more detail on the number of fish killed, its method to minimize those deaths and how it plans to make up for them.

It appears that the California Coastal Commission is not exactly happy with this vote.

The coastal commission’s executive director, Peter Douglas, had asked the regional water board to delay a decision, saying Poseidon’s plan “would create a real or perceived conflict between the Board’s action and the requirements imposed by the Commission.”

Family Accidentally Catches Olympic Torch Relay

by The Editors on April 10, 2008

20080409 041200 4.9.Torch10 GalleryYesterday, when the Olympic torch made it’s way through San Francisco a local family got to see it first hand, thanks to SF Mayor Gavin Newsom’s last-minute re-routing.

One family of tourists from Southern California was taken by surprise with the torch relay. Chris Girod, who was visiting from Carlsbad, said he and his wife, Diedre, and children Nelson and Helen didn’t know about the torch events until they heard about Monday’s protest on the Golden Gate Bridge. . . . Still, they were excited to be in San Francisco for the events. “It’s been a great educational experience,” said Chris Girod. “We just thought it was good for the kids to see there’s an opportunity to express your views here.”

Sometimes vacations just work out that way.

Carlsbad Artist Showing In Ohio

by The Editors on April 9, 2008

BreslawCarlsbad artist Cathy Breslaw is currently showing her abstract, plastic mesh forms in Kettering, Ohio at the Rosewood Gallery.

“The work combines a poetic sensibility with a handcrafted aesthetic, using cutting, sewing, and reassembling techniques to bring out the latent beauty of the manufactured materials. There is an intimate look at feminism – at the contradiction of the physical strength and durability of the mesh while simultaneously experiencing its delicate and somewhat fragile appearance”.

Obviously, we won’t be checking her work out in person, but it’s good to know what local artists are up to. The Rosewood Gallery exhibition runs through April 25, 2008.
