Checking in with Senior Grubby’sJustin Juchura (maker of our favorite Carlsbad Fish Tacos) to see what they’re doing to keep people fed, while the quarantine continues. If you need to pick up food (and drinks), here’s one of the places in the Village where you can.

Beer lovers of Carlsbadistan, at 4 PM today (December 2, 2011) the doors of Pizza Port Carlsbad open for the 15th San Diego Strong Ale Festival. From 4 until 11 PM strong ale fans can taste, sample, and drink more than 80 different beers (all with more than 8% alcohol). Tickets are $30 at the door and include a festival tasting glass and eight taster tickers (this could get ugly). The festival runs Friday 4 PM to 11 PM and Saturday 11 AM to 11 PM.
Carlsbadistan’sWitch Creek Winery currently has a deal on the dogpiling bargain site Groupon.com. The current offer is $35 worth of wine and wine tastings for $15 (5-7 in store tastings). Not bad at all.
The way Groupon works is that a deal is presented to the public, along with a minimum number of buyers required to turn the deal live. If that “tipping point” is not reached, then no one buys anything. If the minimum is reached, then the deal goes live and everyone gets a piece of the discount.
In Witch Creek’s case they said they’d only do the bargain if 100 people bought in. And buy in they did. So far it appears that Witch Creek has sold 630 of their $15 wine deals. Seems to be working quite alright.
We did a little recon over the weekend and found O’Sullivan’s the place to be for their Pre St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Warm Up session: green hair and all. Looks like everyone is ready for the real thing on Wednesday when The Clay Colton Band and Paddy’s Pig will play “lively renditions of traditional Irish songs, reels, jigs, ballads and drinking songs.”
The professional beer drinkers (and VIPs) are rolling into Pizza Port Bottle Shopon Carlsbad Village Drive at 1 PM for the kick off of the 13th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival, but for the rest of us the event begins at 4 PM, when for $30 we’ll get eight four ounce taster tickets, a commemorative logo glass, and an “official Strong Ale Festival Program to guide you through BEER WONDERLAND!”
The festival which runs 4 – 11 PM on December 4 and 11 AM – 11 PM on Saturday December 5, 2009 and features over 75 beers over 8% alcohol on tap plus some cask conditioned ales at the Bottle Shop area next to Pizza Port Carlsbad
Beer wonderland, indeed. Good thing we can walk home. . .
Carlsbadistan’sPizza Port kicked serious ass last weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Pizza Port nabbed nine medals in all, seven of them from the Carlsbad location including Large Brewpub of the Year, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Brewpub ops director Jeff Bagby (pictured right) was pleased.
“I kind of prepared myself for the worst,” said Jeff Bagby, director of brewpub operations for the Pizza Ports in Carlsbad, Solana Beach and San Clemente. “I was prepared to come home with nothing.”
Congrats to Bagby and the Pizza Port team. We know the beer is good, but it’s even nicer to know it’s the best beer in America.
Black Label Skateboards will be holding the world premier of their new skateboard film God Save the Label on Wednesday night June 17, 2009 at Henley’s Flying Elephant Bar & Grill.
If you don’t enjoy the company of skateboarders it would probably be a perfect night to drink elsewhere.
