TGIF 1: Sue Palmer & Her Motel Swing Orchestra

by The Editors on June 19, 2017

Sue Palmer has been called “San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie.” And this Friday, June 23, 2017 she’ll be playing Stagecoach Park with her Motel Swing Orchestra as the kick-off artist of Carlsbad, California’s 2017 TGIF Concert in the Parks concert series.

Palmer is probably most famous for being the musical partner of blues diva Candye Kane who she travelled the world with as Sue “Beehive” Palmer with Candye Kane and the Swingin’ Armadillos.

Sue is a featured artist on all four of Kane’s CDs under the Antones and Sire labels. Sue’s instrumental composition “Beehive” was featured on Kane’s “Diva La Grande” CD, and Sue and Candye co-wrote the title tune on Kane’s CD “Swango.” “Swango” is also featured in the documentary “The Girl Next Door,” a biography of porn star Stacy Valentine produced by National Public Radio’s Christine Fugat in 2000.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again kick the summer off right and Sue Palmer. Stagecoach Community Park is located at 3420 Camino de los Coches, Carlsbad, CaliforniaMusic starts at 6 PM.

Having Our Say Extended At NVA Theatre

by The Editors on June 14, 2017

Carlsbad’s New Village Arts production of Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years has been extended with four performances added the weekend of June 16 – 18, 2017. It’s the last chance to enjoy what The San Diego Reader has called “One of the best plays for the year. . . a truly splendid show.”

Sarah and Elizabeth Delany’s sharp memories show us the post-Reconstruction South and Booker T. Washington; Harlem’s Golden Age and Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Robeson. Bessie breaks barriers to become a dentist; Sadie quietly integrates the New York City system as a high school teacher. Their extraordinary story makes an important contribution to our nation’s heritage—and an indelible impression on our lives.

Take A Musical Adventure To Moose Pass

by The Editors on June 1, 2017

On Saturday June 3, 2017, Carlsbad’s Museum of Making Music is inviting you to join Alaskan Fiddling Poet Ken Waldman, Professor Bill Bradbury, and special guests (who may even be you!) on a musical journey to Moose Pass, Alaska and back. Ken’s combination of traditional Appalachian-style string-band music, poetry and storytelling has led observers to compare him to both Mr. Fred Rogers and Garrison Keillor.

A former college professor, Ken Waldman has had published six full-length poetry collections, a memoir, a children’s book, and has released nine CDs that mix old-time Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry. Since 1995, he has toured full-time, performing at some of the nation’s leading universities, festivals, and art centers.

This all-ages show is full of fun, music, inspiration, and interactive surprises. Tickets are $3 for students/children, $5 for adults and FREE for Museum Members. Admission to the Museum of Making Music is included! For tickets or to RSVP, please visit the Museum of Making Music’s website or call (760) 304-5844.
