Carlsbadistan City Council Race

by The Editors on November 4, 2008

At 9:55 PM and only 13 of 77 Carlsbadistan precincts reporting it looks like Ann Kulchin and Keith Blackburn are in the lead. The surprise to us is that Glenn Bernard is actually running in fourth place currently. Hard to believe.

  1. ANN J. KULCHIN 8221 28.59%
  2. KEITH BLACKBURN 6659 23.16%
  3. FARRAH DOUGLAS 6347 22.08%
  4. GLENN R. BERNARD 3053 10.62%
  5. THOMAS K. ARNOLD 2886 10.04%
  6. EVAN DELANEY RODGERS 1584 5.51%

We have a sneaking suspicion this is how this election is going to turn out, however, we’re not experts.

Not too surprising that Blackburn, and even Kulchin being at the top, but for Evan being at 5.6%…I don’t even know how to respond. This would have been a good opportunity to bring some good fresh ideas from an unrepresented demographic into C-bad’s leadership. I hope the Carlsbad council members and residents don’t become too comfortable…times are changing, with good reason, and hopefully this council will be able to adapt. EVERYTHING in life is cyclic.

Please post the final numbers.

I can accept everything from yesterday except I continue to find myself shaking my head in disbelief asking….Glenn Bernard? Did I miss something? This may explain some of the mysterious jury decisions we hear about from time-to-time.

I’m getting my “Don’t blame me, I voted for Evan” bumper sticker ready.

There will probably be about 3975 takers. Sales could start a special interest war chest for her to run in 2010. Citizens for Sanity. Last night for a break I watched City Council meeting (Live on Council Cam!). A peeeeved citizen put some kind of serious warning on them. Is there a metal detector to get in there?

Congratulations on your run Evan. 4000 is a number to be proud of! It has been a privilege working with you and I look forward to fallowing your future endeavors!

Thanks for keeping it honest!

Thanks, everyone, for your support and votes and especially to Snyder Art, our very cool campaign HQ in the Village, to CarlsbadCrawl.com and Carlsbadistan.com for spreading the word online!

Together we offered another point of view to the election and got some momentum going in a new direction. A good thing about a lot of the ideas that we developed is that they don’t depend on the City or tax dollars to implement: we can get Phantom Gallery and other projects going on our own toward making Carlsbad clean, lean, and green. It’s never been more important for our city and citizens to be fiscally and physically fit. Please join me in keeping Alga Norte Park at the top of the Council’s priority list.

I’m revamping my website http://www.CleanCarlsbad.com so I can pass on notices of upcoming meetings and projects as well as my take on events. (For example, Tuesday night there was some interesting discussion about developer fees at the City Council meeting; it didn’t make it into the mainstream news coverage, probably due to space, but still important.)

Please contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Tonight there is an informational meeting about the power plant. During the last week of the campaign, I received suggestions about the quarry as an alternative site so I’m curious to find out tonight if that was considered. More details about tonight’s meeting on my website under the 11-5-08 message. Hope to see you there.

re comments made by Carlsbadoin…in my neighborhood, City Hall planted trees just 2 feet from the roadway. The baby trees, cute at first, actually grew, and vehicles strike the branches regularly. On my first evening at this property, I received a cracked windshield and the giant branch ended up on the hood of my truck. Removed 3 or 4 more branches with a saw, yet still obtained a 2d cracked windshield 3 years later. City Hall then sued me in Superior Court, where I acted as my own attorney. Somehow, the City obtained a judgement against me for one dollar. I’ve been told that they spent about $30,000 of your tax dollars for this trial. Have you ever planted a tree within 2 feet of the road?
