Challenged Carlsbadistan triathlete, J.P. Theberge, won gold in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series on the Gold Coast of Australia yesterday, September 12, 2009, in the T5 category for below-knee (BK) amputees.
Theberge said he didn’t feel like he had a World Championship race in him after what he called “a hectic flight from LA to Australia with three kids in tow,” but on race day it didn’t seem to affect him at all. Here’s how he called it on his blog Challengedracing.com:
I had a terrible swim, coming out of the water 8th overall beaten out of the water not only by two other T5 competitors, but also an arm amputee (who, in theory, I should have an advantage over) and a paraplegic (Aussie badass wheelchair racer, Bill Chaffey). . . I started the bike with two T5s in front of me, Ricaldo and Andre. . . Finally at around mile four, Peter Harsch, the Paratri team manager yelled out that I was :41 seconds behind. I knew I could catch him. . . I finished the line 1:24 minutes ahead of Rivaldo, almost seven minutes ahead of Scheiber and 14 minutes ahead of Paul Martin (who, surprisingly, had a lousy race.
