CARLSBAD, Calif. – Three Carlsbad residents who have volunteered for many years with theater and arts groups as well as other nonprofit causes have been honored as Carlsbad Citizens of the Year for 2009.

The honorees are Bobbie Hoder, and Jim and Pat Hansen, who are all long-time residents of the city. The three received their awards at a special City Council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

“These three Carlsbad residents have given countless hours of their time to help make Carlsbad a better place to live. We are proud to call them friends and neighbors and applaud their selection as Citizens of the Year,” said Mayor Claude “Bud” Lewis.

The Citizens of the Year program began in 1967. Each year, a citizens committee appointed by the mayor evaluates nominations and selects the honorees, based on such factors as community commitment and volunteerism.

The winners each receive a plaque from the city, and their names are engraved on a large “perpetual plaque” at City Hall.

Bobbie Hoder, a Carlsbad resident since 1965, worked for the city for 36 years before retiring and launching a new full-time career as a community volunteer. She served as president of the Carlsbad Community Theater for 17 years and remains on the group’s advisory board.

She also serves as president of the board of directors of Hospice of the North Coast and is involved with a number of other community groups, such as the Performing Arts Theater of the Handicapped, New Village Arts and the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.

Jim and Pat Hansen have lived in Carlsbad for more than 50 years, and during most of that time, they have volunteered with a variety of community groups. Jim is a retired high school teacher, and Pat is retired from her job as programs and exhibits coordinator with the Carlsbad Library.

Both are actors and founders of the Carlsbad Playreaders. Pat’s volunteer resume includes the position of props mistress and board member with New Village Arts. Both Jim and Pat have demonstrated their willingness to help many different groups, especially those tied to the art and theater community.
