ABC Suspends La Costa Grill’s Liquor License

A State of California Alcoholic Beverage Control notice posted near the front door of Carlsbadistan’s La Costa Grill says the “Alcoholic Beverage License Issued for these premises has been suspended. . . for violation of the Alcoholic Beverage Control act.”

The suspension, which went into effect on September 29, 2010, is listed as “indefinite” according to the posted sign. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control website, however, says the license owned by JRO Restaurant Group LLC (#469390) expired on August 31, 2010.

A flyer posted next to the suspension notice informed would be customers that the “La Costa Grill will be temporarily closed due to a pending transfer of our liquor license. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to serving you again in the near future.”

No one answered our calls at the La Costa Grill, but we did get a phone message that said, “Happy Holidays. The La Costa Grill will be closed Christmas Day.”

Sounds like updating their phone message is not high on the current priorities list.

probably serving alcohol to minors…

I’ve been there twice, the first time I walked in and left right away because it changed way to much from The Crazy Burro. The 2nd time my roommate and I had nothing to do so we went to check it out. They kept serving us and the rest of the bar for at least an hour after last call and they kept serving one girl who may have been the most drunk that I’ve ever seen a person.

The La Costa Grill is definitely “a great plus” for Carlsbad and the community compared to the “old Crazy Burro” that was there, with it’s horrible food. Even our kid’s did not like the food.

I’m sure that everything will be just fine with the La Costa Grill when they get things ironed out with their license, etc.

Great food, great service, reasonable prices, especially for what you get.

Let’s try to support them—it’s a plus for us !!!

The food at La Costa Grill is not good. My husband and I have tried it 3 times and the prices are too high and we don’t like the menu nor the food. The Crazy Burro as it was formerly was actually better because it was more like a neighborhood restaurant and the prices were so much better. Plus the people who worked there were so much more friendly!

We loved La Costa Grill. Yes the service was a bit slow but the atmosphere and food were great! I felt the prices were worth the quality and quantity of food. Plus, with the restaurant.com certificates, the prices were amazing. I hope they work things out because they are greatly missed!

For everyones information La Costa Grill’s liquor license was not suspended due to serving a minor or over serving anyone. It was NOT an issue with the staff.
The license was suspended because the owner, Mark Jones failed to pay payroll taxes and sales taxes and after several promises to pay the BOE suspended theie liquor license. Mark Jones ran off to Hawaii with his mistress and left his employees to deal with the mess. Mark Jones also failed to pay his employess their last weeks pay checks.

DITTO that…Scum bag, took all the money and ran. What a shame.

JL November 6, 2010 at 11:54 am

That scum bag didn’t run far…he’s back in Carlsbad living in La Costa.

G November 7, 2010 at 11:23 am

Yeah, I could really use my last 2 checks worth 65 hours of unpaid work. Not to mention the poor guys in the kitchen who completely rely on their wages! So annoying…

J-dawg November 7, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Has anyone mentioned how paycecks bounced for the last year—all the NSF charges WE got for them not having money in the payroll account? And those of us who were unlucky enough to still have uncashed checks will never see that money??
I lost respect for MJ ages ago—all I wanted was to pay my bills.

Does anyone know what’s going on with the Grill? Will it ever open again?

RL December 22, 2010 at 9:59 pm

I got hired to work in the kitchen when they first
opened…The place was not physically functional which is why the
place always sucked..you can’t just remodel the dining room and
leave the kitchen alone..I got fired for teling dumb ass chuck what
was wrong with the place..then told Mark Jones that it wasn’t
functional..he said they would find a way to make it function..I
told him he wouldn’t and well I knew they were gonna go out of
business…I feel bad for everyone employee and guest who stepped
foot in there…they have no idea what they were doing…if someone
else buys this property please remodel the kitchen…have some
common sense

So any more info ???

LS January 17, 2011 at 11:31 am

It looks like the old managemnet team it trying to re-open the place. I’ve seen Mark Jone’s truck parked outside along with others every morning when I drive by.

The rumor around town is that a new “Microbrewery Restaurant” is planning to open in the old La Costa Grill location sometime in March 2011.

mj March 22, 2011 at 1:23 pm

I saw Mark Jones and that skanky mistress of his at a local eatery a couple of weeks ago. Fed me some crap about the LC Grill. If I’d have known the full story, I would have called him on it. What a dick!

tk April 7, 2011 at 5:09 pm

News around town is the place is under new ownership and management. I’ve driven by and see a remodel doing on and spoke to a construction guy who said a new restaurant coming sometime early summer. Super excited, the area needs some new life there.

pz June 10, 2011 at 6:48 pm

The new Ignite is the same owners. FYI. They will pull the same crap the LCG did.

ls June 17, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Same old management/owners? Too bad I was looking forward to trying the place out when it opens. Now…not so much.

Tom M June 22, 2011 at 5:19 am

Visited LCG several times for happy hour with friends. Cousin worked there part time. It seemed ok. A little pricey but lunches were generally good. The Sat and Wed. outside music was good. The news so far sounds disappointing…wonder how Mark J. pulled off reopening this while oweing back taxes greater than $17K and screwing the employees. I will venture over since I live local to it to see how it changes and evaluate from there forward. Some guys always land on their feet but sounds like he made enemies in doing so…..

nbs July 15, 2011 at 10:29 am

Ignite is NOT, I repeat, iS NOT owned or managed by the same people. This is a false rumor being spread over the internet. Get your facts from the right sources people and stop demonizing a new enterprise. At least give a chance before you dismiss it entirely. And for gods sake, it’s a restaurant! Food and drinks. Is it really worth all the gossip mongering and angry comments?

Peter July 18, 2011 at 7:04 pm

Ignite is ABSOLUTELY owned by the same people as LCG. Frank Day. Mark Jones was never the real owner. LCG closed in shame and they formed a new LLC (day camino) and reopened as Ignite. They owe vendors, lost their ABC license and owe former employees as well. I’m sure there is more. They will end up pulling the same crap as LCG did. IT’s a shame people like this have to give such a bad name to restaurants. Karma is a b….

@NBS July 19, 2011 at 10:47 am

Sounds like you might be Mark Jones, or know him personally. A business that practices screwing their employees out of hard earned money deserves to go under, and those people that caused paychecks to bounce and leave employees unpaid deserve what comes to them.

Don’t do business in my town unless you’re legit!

Pamela July 25, 2011 at 12:13 pm

my daughter is one of the people who was hired there during the summer. she never received her last 2 paychecks and was told for weeks she would get it. She was given one of the other owners cell while the MJ was in Hawaii not giving a crap that these people who worked for him were getting screwed. the other man was very annoyed my daughter had his number and told her she would have to get in touch with MJ as he was the one with the checkbook. Finally, after way too long trying to get her paychecks she was told by the manager to give it up, they were not coming. How to find out if these owners are the same?
