The Masked Rob And Run

by The Editors on July 26, 2007

Two masked Latino men who robbed Yanagi Restaurant on El Camino Real and Alga and then hit the Marriot Residence Inn on the 2000 block of Faraday Tuesday night July 24 are being sought by police. The suspects are described as approximately 25 year olds, 5-foot-11 to 6-feet tall, and weighing 160 to 170 pounds. They reportedly escaped in a “gray or silver” SUV and made it to Vista where they robbed a Mexican restaurant.

At least it wasn’t another Carlsbad bank, huh?

Elmer Fudd-a-Like Robs Carlsbad B of A

by The Editors on July 13, 2007

Fudd RobYesterday morning (July 12, 2007) at approximately 11 AM a man in his mid-thirties, described as stocky, white, with dark hair and a mustache walked up to a teller at the Bank of America on Carlsbad Village Drive and demanded cash. So far authorities have not reported how much money was taken. The man’s resemblance to cartoon character Elmer Fudd is apparently coincidental.

He had a stocky build, and was between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. He was wearing a green camouflage-style baseball cap with a yellow emblem; a blue, short-sleeved, button-down, collared shirt over a white, long-sleeved T-shirt; and glasses.

Oddly, this is the second Carlsbad bank robbery since we started keeping track. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255 or the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.

FBI Says Geezer Bandit Still On The Run

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Geezer04202010 3 T352When robbery suspect Edward Power, 58, of Carlsbad (click here for 2005 photo) robbed an Oceanside Wells Fargo Bank yesterday (Monday, November 2, 2010) he claimed to be the Geezer bandit. Now, the FBI is reportedly saying he is not man they’re looking for in all the previous bank robberies according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The FBI said the real Geezer Bandit, named for his elderly appearance, is still wanted. The last robbery attributed to him was June 24 at a bank in Temecula. Authorities say the Geezer has robbed 11 banks since August 2009.

As Carlsbad Lt. Kelly Cain told us last night, “Why someone would claim to be a guy wanted by the FBI during a robbery, I do not know.”

101 Bandit Suspect Caught in NorCal

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

A man police suspect of being the 101 bandit who they believe is responsible for at least one Carlsbad bank robbery on November 15 and 15 others since July may have been caught near Marysville, California yesterday.

Arthur Cheney, 64, of Napa was arrested at 4:20 p.m. after a California Highway Patrol officer saw him driving on Highway 70 in a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 with a paper license plate, CHP Sgt. Scott Klocker. A car matching that description has been linked to bank robberies from Palm Desert to the Bay Area, including San Jose and Palo Alto.

Apparently, when the CHP pulled him over and searched the car they found a “sticky note” with a handwritten message: ‘Robbery – 100s and 50s only.’ Officer Klocker joked, “We call that a clue.”

On The Hunt For The 101 Bandit

by The Editors on November 28, 2007

BanditPolice are trying to track down a “white or Latino and in his late 50s, about 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and dark hair that is gray at the temples” for at least one bank robbery in Carlsbad (The Old Codger) and a string of 14 robberies around the county.

In yesterday’s robbery, the man entered the Pacific Trust Bank on Bernardo Center Drive off Interstate 15 Monday at 11:05 a.m. He did not use or simulate a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

We’re guessing once you start walking into banks and asking for money and get it, it might be kind of hard to stop. This guy doesn’t even wear a disguise. . . or is that the disguise? If you’ve seen him call police at (619) 531-2299, the FBI at (858) 5651255 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.

Union Of The SWAT

by The Editors on June 14, 2007

13483136 240X180You leave the controls for a few days and all hell breaks lose. The Union Bank of California at 840 Carlsbad Village Drive was held up by an 18-year-old who claimed he was carrying explosives.

. . . shortly before 1 p.m. The man entered the bank wearing only a pair of board shorts and claimed he had an explosive device, a gelatin liquid in a canister, police said. . . The man told tellers he wanted all the money from the bank or he was going to “cause damage” to people inside, authorities said.

You’d think you might want to put on a little more of a disguise when you rob a bank. We guess not if you want to get caught. Maybe this bank robbery was just a cry for help.

The Riehl World: Public Workers Not Overpaid

by Richard J. Riehl on November 18, 2010

At a September forum for Carlsbad’s mayoral and city council candidates, one city hall hopeful declared good pay for public safety personnel was unnecessary, since so many kids dream of fighting fires and catching criminals. Another claimed that if pay for public employees were cut by a third there’d be no problem finding replacements for those who quit.

Even though both candidates were losers, their comments may explain why voters overwhelmingly approved Carlsbad’s Prop G, which will prevent future city councils from increasing public safety employee benefits. Meanwhile, newspaper headlines continue their assault on public employee pay. In hard times, it seems, we need scapegoats.

Ever since a handful of elected officials in a small town in Los Angeles County were caught helping themselves to astronomical salaries at taxpayer expense, politicians and the press have declared open season on public employees.

The latest example is an article appearing in the North County Times a couple of weeks ago (“Salaries up for county employees,” November 7). The lead-in claims, “Base pay for some increased by 31 percent from 2007 to ’09.” This may have been an eye-catching introduction to a front page story. But it also fell short of the truth.
