Carlsbad B of A Robbed A Second Time

by The Editors on December 4, 2007

We were making jokes earlier about Christmas consumption driving a rash of Carlsbad robberies, but this isn’t funny any longer. The Bank of America branch at the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive was robbed yesterday (December 3) at about 2:30 PM. This is the same bank that was robbed on July 12 by a guy who looked like Elmer Fudd.

Police said the man gave the teller a demand note and showed a handgun in his waistband. The teller then gave the robber cash before he fled on foot, police said. . . .The thief was described as a white male, about 30 years old, with brown hair and a mustache. He was also described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a blue jacket, a polo shirt, and blue jeans, police said.

And the bank robbery tote board (counting since May 07) moves to nine. This is the second Carlsbad B of A robbery in three days.

Old Codger Robs Carlsbad Bank

by The Editors on November 15, 2007

Bank NoteWe’re thinking of creating the Carlsbadistan Bank Robbery Tote Board, just so we can more easily keep track of all the bank robberies in our quaint little village (this is number six in six months).

Today’s perp was described as a white, 60-year-old man, 5 feet 10, about 160 pounds wearing glasses, a white shirt, and blue jeans.

The man entered the [California Bank and Trust] branch on Carlsbad Village Drive near Madison Street about 10:45 a.m. After the teller gave him the money, the robber ran away. No weapon was seen.

Though we find it hard to believe that he ran all that fast. He was 60.

Barrio Carlsbad Circle K Robbed

by The Editors on October 6, 2007

After attempting to hold up a 7-Eleven in Cardiff on October 3 at 1 AM, it seems that the black man in a ski mask drove north to Carlsbad and then robbed the Circle K on Roosevelt Street at gunpoint.

The gunman demanded cash and was seen leaving in a dark-colored car, police said. . . He was described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, 165 pounds and bald.

We’re wondering if the Ralphs bank robber just shaved off his dreads for another round of robberies.

Man Robs Ralphs Grocery Bank

by The Editors on September 28, 2007

Hey look, another Carlsbad bank was robbed yesterday at 3:40 PM. This time it was the Union Bank of California that is located inside the Ralphs at Avenida Encinas. The man asked for cash and:

The teller handed over the cash and the robber escaped after running south through the parking lot. He was described as black, in his mid-30s, 5 feet 11 inches tall, of medium build, with his hair in dreadlocks. He wore dark pants, a gray sweat shirt and sunglasses and carried a dark backpack.

The man walked with less than $1000 in cash. Though police “searched the area for almost an hour” with the help of the San Diego County Sheriff helicopter they did not find him. This is the fifth Carlsbad bank robbery since May.

FBI Says Geezer Bandit Still On The Run

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Geezer04202010 3 T352When robbery suspect Edward Power, 58, of Carlsbad (click here for 2005 photo) robbed an Oceanside Wells Fargo Bank yesterday (Monday, November 2, 2010) he claimed to be the Geezer bandit. Now, the FBI is reportedly saying he is not man they’re looking for in all the previous bank robberies according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The FBI said the real Geezer Bandit, named for his elderly appearance, is still wanted. The last robbery attributed to him was June 24 at a bank in Temecula. Authorities say the Geezer has robbed 11 banks since August 2009.

As Carlsbad Lt. Kelly Cain told us last night, “Why someone would claim to be a guy wanted by the FBI during a robbery, I do not know.”

Geezer Bandit Apprehended In Carlsbad?

by The Editors on November 1, 2010

(November 1, 4:45 PM) The Village Apartments in the 3600 block of Roosevelt St. are currently closed by Carlsbad Police as a SWAT operation is conducted.

According to Carlsbad Police, a car matching the description of one used in several armed robberies today (including two banks) was followed to the tiki-themed apartment complex. Two people are currently in custody (one a white male in his late 50s with long gray hair and a woman) and a SWAT team is preparing to sweep the complex.

Village Apartment residents are being told that they could be barred from returning to their homes for up to an hour, maybe two. Carlsbad Police are on the scene as well as an field evidence technician from the Oceanside Police Department. Earlier seven Carlsbad Police Cars, two Oceanside Police Units, one City truck, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Helicopter were on the scene.

The San Diego Union-Tribune is now reporting that the man arrested identified himself as “the Geezer Bandit”.

The arrest followed a short standoff with the Carlsbad police SWAT team on Village Drive near Roosevelt Street, said Carlsbad police Lt. Bruce May. Another person also was arrested. . . May said the SWAT incident followed the robbery in Oceanside and two robberies in Carlsbad — one at a medical facility and one at a bank. He said witnesses wrote down a license plate number and a vehicle description.

One resident of the Village Apartments confirmed that one suspect (the man with long gray hair) “is one of my neighbors. Yeah, he lives in the complex.”

According to Carlsbad Police Lt. Kelly Cain, the suspect attempted to rob a medical facility on El Camino Real in Carlsbad, but was told they had no cash. Minutes later a “unsuccessful robbery” was attempted at the Carlsbad Bank of America on El Camino Real, and finally the Wells Fargo Bank on Vista Way in Oceanside was robbed.

“The license plate from the Oceanside robbery comes back to this address,” Cain said at the scene. “Officers set up and saw a male adult pull up, exit the vehicle, enter the house. Officers surrounded the house. He came out the back door about 30 minutes later. A woman also exited the house and both were detained for investigation. We believe we have reasonable cause to hold both of them.”

Cain said it did not appear that the woman being held was involved with the robberies themselves.

By 6:15 PM residents were still being kept from their homes while the Carlsbad Police department waited for a search warrant. Cain said depending on how the search goes The Village Apartments residents could be back in their homes within by 7 or 8 PM.

Follow the jump for more photos from this afternoon’s scene.

Premium Robbery At Outlet Mall

by The Editors on July 26, 2008

The driver of a limo-van who had just dropped people off at Legoland and the Carlsbad Premium Outlet Mall Friday night July 25, 2008 was bound and robbed at gun-point by a black man 20-30 years old, medium build 5 feet 8 inches tall, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The driver had dropped other customers from Los Angeles at LegoLand before going to the outlet mall. As he waited, a man walked up to him, pointed a pistol at him and ordered him into the back of the van, Sgt Keith Blackburn said. . . . The gunman bound the victim’s ankles and wrists with plastic zip-ties. He took the victim’s bank teller machine card, ordered him to reveal his secret code, and drove him to several banks over the next hour.

The limo driver was dropped back off at the outlet mall where a passerby was able to free him from his Zip ties. No one was hurt and it wasn’t clear how much money the robber got. That sort of thing is not supposed to happen here. Seriously.

The Masked Rob And Run

by The Editors on July 26, 2007

Two masked Latino men who robbed Yanagi Restaurant on El Camino Real and Alga and then hit the Marriot Residence Inn on the 2000 block of Faraday Tuesday night July 24 are being sought by police. The suspects are described as approximately 25 year olds, 5-foot-11 to 6-feet tall, and weighing 160 to 170 pounds. They reportedly escaped in a “gray or silver” SUV and made it to Vista where they robbed a Mexican restaurant.

At least it wasn’t another Carlsbad bank, huh?
