Street Faire Another “Success”

by The Editors on May 5, 2008

z2925f45a58d4e2b888257440001032c1.jpgWe didn’t make it to the Carlsbad Street Faire this year, but we know tens of thousands did because we heard the streets of Carlsbadistan were lined with cars, again.

Luckily, for all of us, the North County Times was there.

Now in its 34th year, the street fair is, according to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, the largest one-day street fair in the nation, boasting more than 100,000 visitors.

“It’s actually so popular that we get calls from out of state from people who’ve been to it before and want to plan their vacation around it,” said Angela Holman, director of communications for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the event.

Funny thing: we planned our vacation around it, too. But we planned to be gone. Let us know if we missed anything good.

D: All Things Digital Returns To Carlsbad

by The Editors on May 5, 2008

Allthingsd

The biggest, most important tech conference (if you judge it by its attendees), D: All Things Digital will be back in Carlsbad at the Aviara Four Seasons Resort May 27-29, 2008.

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft. News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch. Jeff Bewkes of Time Warner. Yahoo’s Jerry Yang. . . . All of them engaged in roiling Internet deal-making of late and all of them in just three weeks on the same stage–but not, thankfully, at the same time.

Looks like this is going to be an even better party to crash than last year.

by The Editors on May 4, 2008

Carlsbad’s Ben Bourgeois slipped past the field of APS World Qualifying Tour surfers to snag the Nike 6.0 at Trestles yesterday.

“I was able to squeak by in the quarters and semis, but everything was coming my way and I was in good rhythm in the final,” he said afterward, in a calm tone you’d expect from a veteran who’d spent years on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ qualifying circuit.

Congrats, Benny.

Carlsbadistan’s Self-Help Hay Maker

by The Editors on May 3, 2008

04Hay01 190Self-help goddess Louise Hay, 81, is one of the best-selling women writers in history and her publishing company Hay House Publishing is based in Carlsbad.

The New York Times is featuring a comprehensive profile on the woman who is responsible for a self-improvement empire that works with some of the biggest names in the business.

Today the company turns out books, CDs, calendars and card decks by many of the titans of the large world that booksellers are now calling “Mind/Body/Spirit,” a category that includes the literature of psychics/intuitives, angel therapy, positive thinking, New Thought, water therapy and motivational speaking. Wayne Dyer, Suze Orman, Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Sylvia Browne and Doreen Virtue are all Hay House clients. Last year, Hay House — which is owned jointly by Louise Hay and the company president, Reid Tracy, 45 — sold 6.3 million products, taking in $100 million, 8 percent of which was profit.

Selling solutions to those who hunger for help sounds like a great market, huh? Click the link for the rest of the Hay House story.

CHS Student Presses For Smoke-Free City

by The Editors on May 3, 2008

Carlsbad HIgh School sophomore Michael Caraglio has written an opinion piece for the North County Times on the need for the City of Carlsbad to go smoke-free.

This is to all the citizens of Carlsbad who are wondering why Carlsbad has not passed a smoke-free ordinance like many other cities in San Diego County. I am really wondering, too. . . .My sister and I have been working on encouraging the city to pass such an ordinance for almost three years. . . .I am tired of hearing that there are more important items on the city council agenda. What could be more important than protecting its citizens from secondhand smoke and litter?

Michael, we agree completely. Wonder if it has anything to do with our “pro-smoking” Mayor and council members?
