Friday night at 9:30 two masked men robbed the Carlsbad Comfort Inn on Pio Pico Drive with a handgun and a shotgun, according to a story in the North County Times.
One suspect was described as a white man about 20 years old, 6-feet to 6-feet-2-inches tall, with a thin build. The second suspect is a black man in his mid-20s, 5-feet-8-inches to 5-feet-10-inches tall. He wore a faux black leather jacket and had a medium build.
The two men reportedly stole $300 in cash and a portable DVD player before “running south toward Tamarack.” It is believed that the same men then continued on to Encinitas and robbed the Chin’s Szechwan Cuisine on Encinitas Boulevard at 10:30 PM.

The 65-year-old dam at Lake Calavera that nearly flooded the mobile home park at the Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course in January of 2005, and has “failed inspections by the state Division of Safety of Dams,” is getting a needed upgrade according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.
“Although they won’t have it all done by the start of the rainy season, we’re very pleased the city has finally gotten around to putting in the controls and controlling the level of the lake,” said Bill Arnold, president of Rancho Carlsbad’s homeowners association. . . “In 2005 the lake was already full, we got a couple inches of rain and had a near disaster,” Arnold said.
The total cost of the upgrades are being estimated at $6.1 million.

Despite not having a skateboard park or anyplace to ride a skateboard, Carlsbad’s Pine Avenue park was recently awarded a “Park of the Year” award from the American Public Works Association, according to a story in the North County Times.
The city was recognized for its use of environmentally sound building materials as well as its public outreach process during the design phase of the project, according to officials from the association.
Congrats. Now where is our skateboard park?

As much as we love Carlsbadistan, there are times when we’re not that sad to be away. One of those days is Black Friday (especially when there is no real surf). And the best place to NOT be is the mall.
Fox 6’s Antonio Castelan did a little live broadcasting from the No Fear store at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets to get the pulse of the mad Christmas shopping bonanza that began at midnight Friday morning. No Fear workers said their busiest time of the day so far was the midnight to 3 AM. Good, lord. People certainly are programmed to buy, buy, buy. We’re proud to say we didn’t buy one thing today. Did you?

According to the North County Times, a 13-year-old skateboarder, who was not wearing a helmet took, a Thanksgiving Day slam at the Carlsbad Skateboard Park and knocked himself out.
The boy . . . was unconscious for a few minutes after hitting the concrete. He was taken by Mercy Air helicopter to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Sure, it’s a mall. And the reason they’re having a Christmas Tree Lighting at all is to get you into the parking lot because once you’re there chances are you’ll buy something. But in the spirit of the season let’s just ignore that for a moment and think about how nice it will be to bundle up the kids, hop in the sleigh and slide on over to The Forum Shopping Center at 1923 Calle Barcelona in Carlsbad where, according to the North County Times, you can enjoy “children’s crafts, complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides, music, and visits with Santa. Mr. Claus plans to light the tree at 7 p.m.”
The Forum is even taking donations that will be used toward San Diego fire relief efforts. ‘Tis the season to kick off Christmas at the mall. The party starts at 5 PM on Black Friday November 23, 2007.

Bill H.R. 4134, which was passed by the House of Representatives last week, earmarks $25 million in funding directly to the Carlsbad-based non-profit online safety organization i-Safe to “carry out Internet crime prevention education programs.” It has yet to pass the Senate, however, not everyone is happy about it.
There are a number of organizations in this space and it makes no sense for Congress to single out one organization,” Larry Magid, co-director of ConnectSafely.org, a nonprofit Internet safety organization, wrote in an e-mail. “I would prefer specific funding to be handled by a federal agency rather than Congress, which really isn’t in a position to evaluate effectiveness or appropriate messages.”
According to the National Journal, Nancy Willard, executive director of the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use, says this would be a waste of public funding because iSafe offers a:
Web 1.0-style Internet safety education — fear-based, simplistic rules with a ‘just say no’ approach that is doomed to failure with today’s totally wired kids and teens.” Investing so much in one group would eliminate benefits derived from competition and diversity, undermine collaboration, and stifle innovation, she said.

According to the North County Times, construction has begun on a brand spanking new terminal at the McClellan-Palomar Airport that will apparently replace the shack and two mobile homes that currently comprise the airport’s facilities.
The $26 million terminal will be six times larger than Palomar’s existing facility and will include larger and more technologically advanced ticketing and baggage screening areas, a more spacious lobby, a boarding lounge, a restaurant and three new parking lots, according to a conceptual plan posted on the airport Web site. . . A new 420-space parking lot will be built nearby to replace those covered by the new building. Taken together with two existing parking lots, the airport will have more than 700 spots when the project is complete.
The construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2009. We’re just hoping the parking stays free and the casual atmosphere is not completely lost. There really is nothing better than skipping Lindberg Field entirely.

Carlsbad’s Kelly McCann, a member of the Duke University Blue Devils women’s soccer team, made a major contribution to their weekend win over the University of Georgia and helped move the Blue Devils in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Sunday.
Junior Kelly McCann played the ball to the right side of the field just outside Georgia’s penalty box. Redmond, a native of Morristown, N.J., latched on to the pass, took a touch back inside to put the ball on the left foot, and struck a bending ball into the top left corner of the Bulldog net. Betos made a diving effort and got a hand on the shot but couldn’t catch enough to parry it wide. . . “Kelly McCann played a really good entry ball to her,” said [Robbie] Church. “She turned and started to run at their back line. I noticed that none of their back players stepped to her. She knows that if they don’t step to her she has the freedom to hit. She then cranked it and it was a great goal.” . . McCann, who is from Carlsbad, Calif., posted her fourth assist this year.
Yeah, that’s how we do it in Carlsbadistan. Congrats, Kelly.
