On Saturday, June 23, 2007 (which is a pretty big day around here for reasons that will go undisclosed at this point) the Cannon Art Gallery is hosting one of its hands on art-making events for the whole family. It’s called the Family Open Studio and it will be held from 11 AM to 2 PM in the courtyard of the Carlsbad Library at 1775 Dove Lane (the big one out near Alga and El Camino Real).
First there is an art exhibition (this week featuring art from employees of the William D. Cannon Art Gallery) and then it’s time for everyone to kick back and make some art (with everything you need supplied by the gallery). For more information call the Arts Info Line at 760/434-2904 or click here.

Occasionally high end architecture, especially in custom ocean front homes, falls into what an old acquaintance categorized as “more money than brains” design. The idea is that often people with money end up designing a home that they would never design nor build if there were fiscal limitations. And this lack of constrained creativity produces buildings that don’t quite ring true.
The Kiko Beach Front Residence tips lightly into this category and is currently under construction at 2649 Ocean Street. Designed by the obviously talented Wolfram Kalber of Wolf Design Build the Kiko Beach House is a functional looking four story that is wrapped in superfluous waves of stucco facades and oddly shaped accessories.
While the building maximizes the lot perfectly, the most interesting aspect is the way it interfaces with the beach out front. A wall separates the public beach from the private beach and then that private beach is again segmented from the swimming area with what looks like a glass enclosure matched on the wall of the pool with a translucent champagne glass like waterfall.
The home is nearing completion and while some could argue that its bombastic contemporary lines are over the top, no one would call it poorly executed, or for that matter ugly.

Carlsbad outdoor furniture company Maku Furnishings was recently written up by the Los Angeles blog Apartmenttherapy.com for their showing at the recent International Contemporary Furniture Fair May 19-22, 2007 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
One of our favorite Southern California companies we interviewed during ICFF was Maku Furnishings of Carlsbad, equally for the company’s modern outdoor furnishings, and also because of the company’s unusual origins. There’s not many stories of migrations from the world of snowboarding/surfing into the realm of home furnishings.
Johnny West, a former snowboard/ski industry worker and the company’s co-founder explains the company this way: “When I looked at the home furnishings industry I saw an opportunity to share that passion for living by bringing a more relevant product and story to the consumer.”
If you’re interested in checking out the furniture in an installed setting check out the new Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido. The furniture is probably the tastiest item on the menu.

The New Village Arts Theatre located in the old Bauer Lumber Building at 2787 State Street, is presenting Sam Shepard’s 1980 play True West. The story is a classic case of sibling rivalry set in a high desert shanty. One brother Austin is a screenwriter working on script for a Hollywood film, the other is a loser drifting through a life of crime. True West is a perfect play for an intimate space as the audience nearly becomes part of the action as the two brothers slowly begin to tear each other’s psyches apart until the high and low roads have become completely swapped.
True West runs at from June 16th to July 8, 2007. Click here for more info.
