New Village Arts’ God Of Carnage

by The Editors on October 5, 2016

godofcarnage

Talk about parent traps. God Of Carnage, a one-act comedy, takes you on an adventure into the darkest, most terrifying recesses of American life: parenthood.

When two New York couples meet to discuss their sons’ playground tussle, a civilized evening of pleasantries and small talk erupts in a chaotic explosion of anarchy and vitriol. GOD OF CARNAGE delivered a sucker-punch to the Broadway scene, taking home the 2009 Tony for Best Play and earning knock-out reviews. This production boasts an all-star cast of NVA veterans: Manny Fernandes, Melissa Fernandes, Jeffrey Jones*, and our own Executive Artistic Director, Kristianne Kurner!

Pay-what-you-want previews begin Friday, October 14, 2016. For more information, please click the link.

Behind The Oklahoma Scenes At NVA

by The Editors on September 1, 2016

Carlsbad’s New Village Arts Theatre is currently performing their production of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Oklahoma, and the show has been receiving rave reviews.

Oklahoma! is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece about a romantic rivalry on the Western frontier which boasts a collection of classic songs and a spirit that’s made it an enduring favorite. The story of the lovely Laurey and her two determined suitors — Curly the cowboy and Jud the hired farmhand — also tackles the class issues between farmers and cattlemen in the rugged landscape of a new state.

The San Diego premiere of Emile kicks off at the New Village Arts Theatre on February 13, 2016, but previews are still rolling if you want a sneak peak.

La Marquise du Châtelet was a mathematician, a physicist and the toast of the Enlightenment. So why then is the Marquise not better known? Like so many influential women of the time, her contributions have largely been attributed to her male contemporaries. But now, Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight, the brilliant play from award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson, resurrects this fascinating personality and brings her once more into the light.

See a preview on Thursday, February 11 or 12, 2016. For more info, please click the link.

The Weir At New Village Arts Theatre

by The Editors on September 20, 2015

Theweir

The New Village Arts Theatre is happy to present The Weir, written by Conor McPherson, directed by Kristianne Kurner opening on October 10, 2015. But the even better news is that beginning October 2, 2015 NVA will be running some “pay-what-you-can” previews. Here’s what The Weir is about:

You can always count on a pub to be the one place you want to go where everybody knows your name — which is especially true for the townsmen who congregate at Brendan’s pub for their daily pint. However, all familiarity gets shaken up when a mysterious woman enters the bar and the men instinctively regale her with fascinating tales of spirits from the past and present. But one story proves to be much more chilling and real to the men than they could ever imagine. Winning the Laurence Olivier Award for “Best New Play,” this haunting production of The Weir makes its NVA debut!

Sylvia Returns To New Village Arts

by The Editors on September 16, 2015

0417A387-A242-4760-8D04-0744E4Df41E5

After a successful run earlier this year that doggone comedy Sylvia is returning to Carlsbad’s New Village Arts Theatre for a limited engagement January 7-24, 2016. If you don’t know, here’s a little reminder on what the play is about.

When Greg adopts a dog named Sylvia, or rather is adopted by the street-smart mutt, Sylvia (played, alas, by a human) soon turns into a bone of contention for his wife Kate. In this romantic comedy by A.R. Gurney, the author of Love Letters, the long-married empty nesters have to dig their way out of an unexpected hole: Kate feels that she’s losing Greg to his adoring new best friend. This imaginative take on a midlife crisis leads to lots of laughs and thoughtful insights on love, marriage, jealousy and canines.
