It was opening day where the turf meets the surf in old Del Mar yesterday, and hordes of Carlsbadistanians skipped work to be down on the rail dressed up and betting. The San Diego Union-Tribune caught two of them dressed up as a horse and his trainer.
Carlsbad residents Jim Meade (left) and Larry Irwin skipped the hats and instead donned masks to portray a trainer and his horse yesterday at the opening day of racing season at Del Mar. The two stayed in character much of the day, with Meade often leading Irwin around.”

Saucy 18-year-old Czech tennis player Nicole Vaidisova says that due to a “viral infection” she will not be able to play in the upcoming Acura Classic at La Costa Resort & Spa.
I am obviously very disappointed,” said Vaidisova, 18, ranked No. 10 on the tour. “The doctor has told me to rest for about two to three weeks, at which point I can slowly get back on the court. I hope to be back for Toronto (where the Rogers Cup will be held Aug. 13-19).”
Nicole, we are obviously very disappointed as well. . .but at least we still have Maria Sharapova.

Merlin Entertainments, the UK-based entertainment company that owns all four Legoland theme parks is selling off (then leasing back) some of Brittian’s most famous tourist attractions including: Alton Towers, Warwick Castle and Madame Tussauds. The company is not, however, selling Legoland, yet.
. . . Merlin said it would retain some freehold property assets, including its four Legoland parks, many of its Sea Life marine conservation centres – including Birmingham – and its Italian theme park Gardaland.
Merlin Enterainments is owned by The Blackstone group, a US-based private equity fund which recently acquired the Hilton Hotels Corporation.

The National Transportation Safety Board has released a preliminary report on the crash of a Beech E90 twin-engine plane at McClellan/Palomar Airport that killed George Swink, 57, of Escondido and another man early in the morning on July 3, 2007. The report, posted on the NTSB.gov website explains what happened but offers few clues as to why the plane hit the wires.
After departing runway 24, the airplane collided with the top wire of a power line about 55 feet above ground level (agl). The airplane traveled another 50 feet before colliding with the bottom two lines of an electrical tower. SDGE reported that the lines were 230,0000 volt lines that were 1-1/4-inch in diameter. These power lines were about 50 feet agl. A piece of the right wing, with a section of the right aileron and the bellcrank attached, remained impaled on the tower about 45 feet up. The tower sustained damage to several support beams and cross members. The airport elevation was 331 feet; the estimated elevation of the first line was 285 feet. . . . The two power lines wrapped around the propeller blades of both engines, and the wires were continuous to the wreckage. The airplane came to rest about 300 yards from the transmission tower after leaving debris and ground scars on the fairway and green of a golf course under development. The debris path was along a magnetic bearing of 270 degrees.
According to a story in the North County Times:
“Howard Plagens, a senior air-safety investigator with the federal agency, said the goal of the two-page report is to collect and publish facts; it does not draw conclusions. Plagens said information contained in the report may change as the investigation continues.”

The Mission Federal Credit Union branch office on Jefferson Street was robbed Monday shortly after 9:30 AM when a six feet tall 250 pound white man who appeared to be in his late 40 or early 50s approached a teller and said, “This is a robbery.”
After the employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the thief left the bank and ran off to the north, according to investigators.
This is the third Carlsbad Village bank robbery in the last two months. Must be our lovely downtown’s easy freeway access.

San Diego Union Tribune columnist Logan Jenkins turned out a “Bricks and Bouquets” column today and guess who got a brick? The Carlsbad City Council. Logan awarded them his “Rich Robotic Golf award:”
. . . why give a pass to the council for blowing an extra $277,200 ($4,620 a month for five years) on gizmos that tell golfers the distance to the pin – and, theoretically at least, to speed up play? Good lord, this is a municipal golf course, not a private country club. It’s bad enough that players are forced to rent carts – you read correctly, no walking is allowed – but now another layer of pricey technology will separate golfers from the way the game is traditionally played.
Pretty easy target, but we can’t say we don’t disagree.

i-Safe, a Carlsbad-based non-profit organization dedicated to educating to “responsibly take control of their Internet experiences” has enlisted the blackmailed, scandal ridden, and newly crowned Miss New Jersey Amy Polumbo to “help raise awareness about victimization of children on the Internet.”
A group called “The Committee to Save the Miss America Peagent” threatened to go public with the photos if Polumbo did not resign her title. Instead, she went public herself and retained the title.
Amy is a very courageous young woman,” says i-SAFE CEO and Program Director Teri Schroeder. “Online victimization like bullying, predation, even child pornography is far too common on the Internet. Amy’s celebrity will have an impact on students and parents as she raises awareness about these disturbing online issues.”
It’s nice that i-Safe can look past the photos and see the true headline-grabbing promotion they can get from being involved with this salacious scandal.

Yesterday morning (July 12, 2007) at approximately 11 AM a man in his mid-thirties, described as stocky, white, with dark hair and a mustache walked up to a teller at the Bank of America on Carlsbad Village Drive and demanded cash. So far authorities have not reported how much money was taken. The man’s resemblance to cartoon character Elmer Fudd is apparently coincidental.
He had a stocky build, and was between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. He was wearing a green camouflage-style baseball cap with a yellow emblem; a blue, short-sleeved, button-down, collared shirt over a white, long-sleeved T-shirt; and glasses.
Oddly, this is the second Carlsbad bank robbery since we started keeping track. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255 or the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.

There is still time to get tickets, we suggest you get on it.
