Alga Norte Now Running With Solar

by The Editors on February 6, 2015

Alga Solar

The solar panels placed at the Alga Norte Park will power most of the park’s electrical needs rolling forward while at the same time providing shade in the park’s hot parking lots.

The 720 solar panels, which cover two rows of Alga Norte’s parking lot and provide shade for park visitors, are expected to generate about 360,000 kilowatt-hours of energy a year, which is enough to power about 55 average San Diego homes. It also will cut carbon dioxide output by approximately 6,838 tons over a 25-year period, which is the equivalent of cutting the emissions of automobiles driving 15 million miles. . . “This system will give us the ability to watch in real time our energy consumption compared to our production,” said City of Carlsbad Civic Projects Manager Patrick McGarry. “That will give us an opportunity to see how much energy the panels are producing and when we’re spiking electric power, allowing us to make decisions to reduce consumption.”

According to the City the panels, which cost $720,000, will pay for themselves in 11 years and begin creating a $66,000 a year savings in year 12. For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Tamarack Restooms Get Needed Upgrade

by The Editors on January 2, 2015

Tamarack State Beach

The restrooms at Carlsbad State Beach near Tamarack Avenue will be closed starting Monday, Dec. 29, through the end of January for some long-awaited maintenance and upgrades. Temporary restrooms will be available in the Tamarack Avenue parking lot, and restrooms at the Pine Avenue ramp will remain open, with extended hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The work on the restrooms will include fresh paint, an epoxy floor, new fixtures and partitions, an upgraded plumbing and electrical system, and a refurbished roof with new skylights. While the restrooms are being improved, crews will also install new hand railing to replace the corroded rails near the restrooms, as well as a new shower and drinking fountain outside. The restroom’s pump station has already been equipped with a new alarm system that will sound if there’s a spill, to prevent beach contamination.

Perfect timing. It’s been way too cold to go outside lately anyway. For the rest of the story, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
