A police investigation is in progress in the 900 block of Carlsbad’s Oak Avenue (behind Albertson’s) after the body of an elderly man was discovered in an apartment building this afternoon (February 15, 2011) according to a story on 10News.com.
Police were notified by a member of the apartment’s management. . . Police are conducting an investigation and said the death is considered suspicious.
[Update February 16, 2011: Police now say there were “no signs of foul play” in the death of the elderly man found yesterday afternoon, according to CBS8.com]

Julianna Garner, Keith Blackburn, Faith Waters, Cierra Halstead, and Corey Cummins.
Carlsbad High junior Cierra Halstead was named The Boys and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s 2010 Youth Of The Year at during a Super Star Dinner held at the Clubs’ village branch on Wednesday, January 26, 2011.
Currently a junior at Carlsbad High School, Cierra considers the Boys & Girls Club her second home. She’s a ten year Club veteran, and has participated in just about every activity that’s been offered. Currently she serves as the president of Keystone Club, the teen leadership program. “The Club has shaped me as a person and has been the support system I needed to push through the hard times of my life,” stated Cierra. “It has been a life changing experience, and I know I would not be where I am today without it.”
Cierra was presented with a $1250 educational scholarship. First runner up Corey Cummins and finalists Julianna and Faith also received scholarships, courtesy of the Blackburn Foundation and Ted Vallas. Congrats to Halstead and all the other honorees. [click to continue…]

It’s a good thing that the Hyatt Park Aviara got an extension on their loan, because they’re going to get some serious high-end lodging competition from the $60 million Hilton Oceanfront Resort & Spa near the campgrounds, according to a story on San Diego Source.
Due for completion mid-year 2012, the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa will feature approximately 15,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, as well as a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center and oceanfront restaurant. The eight-acre site is located in Carlsbad’s southern Ponto region adjacent to the Hanover Beach Colony housing development.
It’s going to be sad to see that empty space go, but it will be good to have a nice resort that is close to the sand.

Runners awoke Sunday morning January 23, 2011 to perfect running weather for the 2011 Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon– clear blue skies, 50 degree temperatures, and no wind. The only downside to the race would be for running surfers who had to plod along past perfectly glassy waves for almost the entire Half Marathon course. As we’ve said every year, there is nothing more beautiful than Carlsbad Blvd. with no cars on it.

On Saturday, January 22, 2011 over a 1,000 people will gather at Carlsbad’s Poinsettia Park for the second annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation Walkathon in support of families whose children are suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
Funds generated from this event will go to the Foundation; a nonprofit, public benefit 501 (c) (3) organization founded by the Thorp family whose son, Mitchell, battled an undiagnosed illness and lost his fight at the age of 18. The family started the foundation in their son’s name to give back to the community, and to support the many other families in need of assistance. . . “The specific purpose of the foundation is to help as many children and families in the community as possible,” said Brad Thorp, president, and father of Mitchell. “The sudden onset of a child’s life-threatening illness is devastating to a family; 24/7 care and hardship become a way of life, our goal is to create as much normalcy in the family unit as possible.”
Sign-in begins at 9 AM and the walk starts at 10 AM at Poinsettia Park at 6600 Hidden Valley Road in Carlsbad. Follow the jump for all the details.

On January 23, 2011 10,000 runners and walkers will invade Carlsbadistan as the Tri-City Medical Center Calrsbad Marathon and Half Marathon fills the streets with the huffing and pounding of shuffling feet. That means there are going to be some road closures (and we love it). here’s the list:
- Marron Road between Monroe Street and Jefferson Street
- Monroe Street between Marron Road and Carlsbad Village Drive
- Jefferson Street between Marron Road and Laguna Drive
- Laguna Drive between Jefferson Street and State Street
- State Street between Laguna Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard
- Carlsbad Boulevard between the north city limits at Buena Vista Lagoon to the south city limits at La Costa Avenue
- Palomar Airport Road between Carlsbad Boulevard and El Camino Real (both lanes from Carlsbad Boulevard to Avenida Encinas then eastbound lanes only from Avenida Encinas to El Camino Real)
- Avenida Encinas between Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road
- Poinsettia Lane between Avenida Encinas and Carlsbad Boulevard
- Camino Vida Roble between Palomar Oaks Way (south) and Palomar Airport Road
- Palomar Oaks Way south of Palomar Airport Road (entire roadway)
- I-5 at Palomar Airport Road both northbound and southbound off-ramps and southbound on-ramp closed

The Carlsbadistan based Greek fast casual restaurant company Daphne’s Greek Café (one of the few places left for falafels in Carlsbadistan) is getting a complete upgrade after surviving bankruptcy according to a story on Nation’s Restaurant News. It’s also getting a new name: how does Daphne’s California Greek sound?
William Trefethen, Daphne’s chief executive and principal investor in the group that purchased the 60-unit chain in July, said the brand name will change in February or March to “Daphne’s California Greek” with the tagline “Live Life to its Fullest.” . . The Carlsbad, Calif.-based chain also is working on a revamp of the menu to sharpen its focus on healthful offerings. Beer and wine will be added to the beverage lineup to help build dinner daypart sales. And units will get a brush up of décor, with environmentally friendly touches.
They’re going to start out in Orange County and then upgrade all the restaurants by the end of 2011. We think Carlsbadistan should be second.
