What purports to be the last legal hurdle between Carlsbadistan and a new high school will reportedly go before a judge next month unless all the groups can come to terms on some kind of settlement according to a Stacy Brandt story in the North County Times.
The property owners suing the district include land developer Bentley-Wing Properties Inc., the Rancho Carlsbad Owners Association and another group of nearby homeowners. They filed their opening arguments in Superior Court on Wednesday, challenging the environmental impact report the district approved in January. . . The lawsuit claims the district hasn’t adequately addressed the environmental and traffic problems that could be caused by the new campus the district plans to build on a 57-acre site near College Boulevard and Cannon Road. . . “All we’re saying is, ‘Let us help you,'” said Wayne Rosenbaum, an attorney representing the group. “Once you build this thing, it’s too late.”
Okay. We all get it. Bentley-Wing wants to make sure they can get the most out of land they own in the area and the residents of Rancho Carlsbad, a mobilehome park that’s pretty much in a hole already, are worried that the new school will increase their already high probability of being flooded. We just hope they can settle it before even more tax dollars are wasted in court. As Brandt says, they have a month.

Red Door Interactive is opening an office in the heart of the Village of Carlsbadistan.
Forgetting for a moment that they are a “creative agency” it seems they’re having some trouble naming two conference rooms in their space above Paon Restaurant (near the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Roosevelt Street), according to a post on their company blog.
How does one name a conference room? Well, our Carlsbad office is just steps from the great Pacific Ocean, so we are hoping for something beach chic. And while nothing is completely off limits, at Red Door is not the kind of place where we name things “The Board Room,” though come to think of it – given how many of our employees love to surf…nah, we are sure you can be more creative than that!
The agency, who has offices in downtown San Diego and Denver, Colorado will apparently buy beer for the person who comes up with the winning name. Which, come to think of it, is probably why they’re outsourcing this project. Click the link if you have any ideas.

According to a note posted on Julie Nygaard’s facebook page the three-term former Carlsbad City Councilwoman is no longer in the race for a seat on the Carlsbad City Council.
In a status update posted at 12:27 PM July 12, 2010 she wrote the following:
After much thought, deliberation and soul-searching, I have decided to not seek election to the Carlsbad City Council.
As many of you may know, I have a new grandchild in my life, and I want to spend more time with her. While I believe I have assembled a winning team, the commitment of campaigning, and then serving on the council, is not one I want to make at this point in my life.
Carlsbad is a special place because of the people who live, work and play here. I love this community, and I only want the best for it. I know Carlsbad will continue to be the best place to live in Southern California.
I want to thank all the people who have helped during this time, particularly my campaign management team of James Comstock, Julie Baker and Ellen Roundtree. They have been very generous in their commitment to me. They are owed a special thank you.
I also want to thank all the people who have encouraged me, believed in me and helped me throughout the years. Your help has been greatly appreciated.
I am proud of the projects that I have worked on throughout the years. Working together, we have created an amazing community.
I will continue to be involved in Carlsbad as a member of the Planning Commission. I will still make my presence known in Carlsbad, and I’m sure I will see many of you around.

Lewis Elliot, 30, of Phoenix, Arizona appeared relaxed and casual as he cruised ahead of the field of 1,000 triathletes and set a new course record in today’s Carlsbad Triathlon with an unofficial time of 1:08:49.
“It was a good race,” Elliot said. “I came from Arizona and the water was cold. We’ve been swimming in lakes with no wetsuits. It was neat to actually be chilly on the swim. I knew it was only for 1000 so I just sucked it up.
Elliot, who wasn’t even planning on competing in the Carlsbad Triathlon until a few days ago, finished ahead of last year’s winner Cam Hill of Fountain Hills, Arizona. “Cam had a great swim. He swam at ASU. He’s a great simmer,” Elliot said. “I was happy to get out less than a minute behind him. I was able to catch him on the bike and them I’m pretty confident in my running.”
Local Carlsbadistan triathlete Thomas Lopez came in third thanks we believe to a special sticker on his back wheel. “The swim is tough,” Lopez said at the finish line. “There are a lot of fast guys out there so I just had to find some feet and hang on for the ride. It was a great bike. The guy who took first [Lewis Elliot] was flying and I just couldn’t catch up to him. The run was pretty much one, two, three with that big a gap between each of us. All in all it was a great race. I’m happy.”
On the women’s side former UCSD triathlon team member Lauren Chiodini had no trouble at all. “It was a good day,” she said. “I was third out of the swim. The water was nice, not too cold and I just powered on through it. The bike was a little bit windy, but I made my way to second. It was an awesome day though.”
Second place finisher Jessi Strensland was leading through the first half of the run, but whenshe saw Chiodini closing the gap she knew it would not last. “I raced Lauren, trained with Lauren this year knowing full well that she can run faster than me right now,” Strensland said. “I haven’t been running. Once Lauren past me I thought I better just enjoy this. Then when I stopped to talk to my friends they’re the ones who told me Tatiana was coming so I thought I better just finish this.”

Turns out we’ve got a horse in this race after all. Carlsbadistan based triathlete Thomas Lopez (Colnago Triathlon Team) will be competing tomorrow in the Carlsbad Triathlon rocking one of our stickers for luck. We’re of course looking for Lopez to dominate. He starts at 8:00 AM. Watch for him among all the other Carlsbadistan locals who are swimming, biking, and running.

A man dressed in black and wearing a black ski masked robbed a man and woman at at gunpoint at 1 AM this morning in the Koko Beach restaurant parking at the corner of Carlsbad Blvd. and Grand, according to a story in the North County Times.
At the demand of the robber, who had a handgun, the couple showed their cell phones and car keys. The thief took the man’s phone and keys to his Honda —- and then fled on foot heading north on Carlsbad Boulevard, Carlsbad police Sgt. G.E. Beason said.
Luckily, no one was hurt.

The Carlsbad Police Department’s SWAT team arrived at a La Golondrina Street residents at just before 9 AM on Thursday, July 8, 2010 after neighbors had reported a man shouting threats, according to a story on 10News.com.
As the SWAT officers took up positions around the home, police continued trying to negotiate the resident’s peaceful surrender by telephone. . . About 10:10 a.m., the man walked out a back door and was taken into custody without incident. Officers then went through the home, discovering he had been inside by himself, Lt. Kelly Cain said.
Police said the 50-year-old man appeared to be having some “mental health issues.” We’d say.

Carlsbadistan based iPhone applications developers Appy Entertainment have released two new apps especially for Apple’s new iPhone 4. They’re not games. And they’re not all that complicated. But they work.
First up is MakeUp Mirror. The app that uses the front-facing camera to turn the iPhone into a mirror:
This little app simply harnesses the iPhone 4’s front-facing camera to position a live video image of your face inside a tasteful mirror frame on your iPhone 4.
The second uses the iPhone 4’s new camera flash as a “flashlight” get it? It’s called BrightLight. Being people who continually leave the lights off and stumble around by the light of our iPhones, this app may prove useful as we’ve been running into things lately.

A 5.4 magnitude quake (downgraded from 5.9) hit Southern California’s desert at 4:53:33 PM 13 miles NNW of Borrego Springs, California according to the US Geological Survey.
The quake was felt from downtown LA through Orange County and even at the beach in Carlsbadistan. Some on Twitter said it was a roller that lasted for at least 20 seconds.
