No Four-Inch Lego Jackson For Now

by The Editors on July 2, 2009

Legoland-Calif-Resjpg-1Just when we thought we had a reason to finally visit Legoland the lawyers wreck everything.

Due to unresolved legal issues, LEGOLAND® California is no longer moving forward with its plan to install a model of Michael Jackson in Miniland U.S.A. as a tribute to the pop icon’s historical contribution to the history of music. . . “We were looking forward to installing a small tribute to Michael Jackson in Miniland,” said Peter Ronchetti, General Manager of LEGOLAND California Resort. “However, legal matters have come to light that prevent us from displaying the model in the Park.”

Yes, maybe it’s best to at least let MJ’s corpse cool.

by The Editors on July 2, 2009

Tamarack Sign

The Tamarack Surf Beach sign that featured a longboarder doing a stylish cutback has apparently disappeared from its past location. We’re hoping it was just taken down for cleaning. . . anyone have any ideas?

Update 5:48 PM: The City of Carlsbad doesn’t know what happened to the sign, though they did say that “the State” was doing some work on the bluff, so “maybe they took it down to clean it.”

Carlsbadistan Water Rates On The Up

by The Editors on June 25, 2009

After a special meeting June 23, 2009 between the Carlsbad City Council and the Carlsbad Municipal Water District Board of Directors it was decided that water and wastewater rates for the city will go up 10 percent beginning August 1, 2009.

Nearly 74 percent of the water rate increase is directly related to increases in water purchase costs. The cost of water is increasing because of long term drought conditions along the Colorado River and legal restrictions on water that comes from Northern California. These two imported water sources make up 100 percent of the Carlsbad Municipal Water District’s supply. A small portion of the increase is also needed to maintain and operate the water system.

Follow the jump for all the details.

Teen Found Dead After “Night of Drinking”

by The Editors on June 24, 2009

According to a story on San Diego 6, a 16-year-old boy was found dead at about 9 AM Tuesday June 23, 2009 at his friends home in the 7300 block of Sitio Lima, in Carlsbad. The North County Times says it was reportedly after a “night of drinking.”

The teen was found unconscious and not breathing . . . Medics pronounced the youth dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family. . . Authorities said the boys had apparently been playing drinking games with tequila, vodka and whiskey before falling asleep. When the other three woke up about 9 a.m. Tuesday, Scott wasn’t breathing.

Carlsbad police Lt. Jay Eppel says there was “no evidence that the teenager’s death was a homicide.” Carlsbad Fire Battalion Chief Ed Sprague said there were no adults in the home when medics arrived.

[Update: The San Diego Union-Tribune says the teen’s name is Scott Eugene Roberts of Carlsbad. “A viewing is scheduled tonight at Oceanside Mortuary and the funeral is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Meadowlark Community Church in San Marcos.”]

A Carlsbad Fathers’ Day Rememberance

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

Former political speech writer Margaret A. Bengs remembers her father; a man who was a physician in Carlsbad for more than four decades, in a Fathers’ Day story in The Sacramento Bee.

Five years ago, when Dad could still walk without help, he took us up to the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside. He led us to a row of cross-shaped headstones jutting up in a lush garden with a view of rolling hills out to the sea where a gold ray of sunshine trembled through the white mist. . . Standing tall beside each headstone, he gave us a commentary on each of the Benedictine monks buried there, whom he had treated during his four decades as a Carlsbad physician. . . .Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Your light will always guide my way.

We send our best Fathers’ Day wishes to all the dads who are doing their best for their children.

Some Pacific Ridge Students Home From China

by The Editors on June 20, 2009

Rick, Stephanie, Juliana, Richie, and Shari Sapp can’t hide the smiles after being reunited.

All 15-year-old Stephanie Stapp (second from left) really wanted after being greeted by her family was some home cooked food. “Tacos sound so good. Mexican food,” she said wistfully between rounds of questions from reporters.

Stephanie, whose father Rick Sapp is the chairman of the board of the Pacific Ridge School, was among the ten students and two teachers who arrived home to the school’s Carlsbad campus tonight around 7:30 PM as part of the first wave of students returning home after their entire school trip had been quarantined in Yichang, China for the H1N1 virus. Three of these returning students had been in the hospital.

062009 9AThe trip was scheduled for 13 days, however it went a little overtime when several of the students fell ill during a river cruise to the Three Gorges Dam.

After those illnesses were reported to the Chinese government the entire group of 35 students and seven faculty were quarantined in the city of Yichang, China.

“We were five days later than we should have been,” Stephanie explained to reporters. “We got to see Shanghai for one day, but we didn’t end up doing the home stays.”

More students will be arriving at the school tonight a little after midnight, and five others who tested positive for Swine Flu earlier this month are still in the hospital in Yichang, China. According to student John Ballif, 15, some of those may be home as early as next week.

Balloons, hugs, smiles, and tears of joy greeted ten students and two teachers as they finally arrived back at Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School after days in quarantine.
