Those Carlsbad Rotarians may not know how to send out a press release or respond to email, but they surely know how to throw beer drinking parties. That’s why we’re so excited about the 26th Annual Carlsbad Rotary Oktoberfest being held in Holiday Park this Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 1 – 10 PM.
There nothing better than spending an afternoon drinking beer in a public park, doing the chicken dance, and helping the kids carve a pumpkin. Plus, it all helps raise money for some good causes. Hopefully we’ll see you there. . . in your lederhosen.

Carlsbadistan resident Nathan Talauega, 45, thought he was going to go for a short dusk paddle in his one-man canoe at about 4:45 PM yesterday, but ended up spending nearly four hours on and in the ocean before being rescued according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Talauega said he was about five miles out and was starting to head back when he heard a popping sound coming from his canoe. A short time later, he heard another loud pop, and the canoe started taking on water, he said. . . . By then he was about three to four miles offshore. He tried to flag down some passing boats, but they didn’t see him, Talauega said.
After three hours in the water Talauega was finally spotted by a lobster fisherman and pulled to safety. If we were him, we’d be interested in speaking with whoever made that canoe.

A small single-engine plane has crashed into a small hillside at 7:19 a.m. yesterday September 28, 2008 a mile from the McClellan-Palomar airport killing pilot Guisseppe “Pino” Puzzo, 41, of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
He crashed after canceling an attempted landing in the morning fog and advising air traffic controllers that he planned to circle the airport and try again, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.
Though this is the second crash in one week Federal Aviation officials says the crash had “nothing to do with the airport.” This brings total plane crash deaths in and around the Carlsbad airport to 10 in the last two years.

The City of Carlsbad says they have no problem with the location of The Crossings At Carlsbad Golf course even though two planes have crashed onto the property in the last 15 months, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“We still feel, and I think the airport plan still considers golf courses safe” for the area, city planning director Don Neu said. “The fact that we don’t have structures and large numbers of people in a small area is a benefit.”
Maybe they can just post a sign that encourages golfers to yell “Fore” whenever they see small planes falling from the sky.
Follow the link for a complete list of plane crashes at McClellan-Palomar Airport since 2002 (there have been seven).

Carlsbadistan dentist Richard Allen, DDS of Avia Dental Care just walked away with $175,000 from Fox’s hit TV show”Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader,” on September 19, 2008.
Dr. Allen was assisted in victory by a class of 5th graders and five colleagues from his office, including Carlsbad residents Diana Lain, Susan Milch, and Jordan Davison as well as Amanda Phillips and Dorothy Davis from Oceanside. He opted to take the money and end the competition after being stumped on a question about the first names of early explorers Lewis and Clark.
What is he going to do with the money? “I will probably donate it to my favorite cause, the education of my two college-age sons,” he said.

The Crossings at Carlsbad golf course claimed another plane yesterday September 22, 2008, at about 4:45 PM as a Cesna 152 single engine plane crashed into a ravine near the 16th hole, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Triubune.
Golfers witnessed it and ran to their aid, carried them out of the plane,” Carlsbad Battalion Chief Jim Torretto said. . . . The pilot, 22, and passenger, 19, had flown from Long Beach in the Cessna owned by Rainbow Air Academy. . . The men, whom he described as alert but confused, were carried out of the ravine by firefighters. A helicopter landed on a dirt lot and took the men to a hospital. They had suffered fractures and cuts.
In the past two years nine people have died in crashes after landing or taking off at McClellan-Palomar.

This morning news that former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein had survived a South Carolina Learjet crash in which four others had died had the world wondering who else was on the plane.
Now, sadly, the story has come home to Carlsbadistan. Carlsbad resident James Bland, 52, a co-pilot on the Global Exec Aviation jet, was one of the four people who died in the fiery crash, according to a story in the LA Times.
A family man, Bland shared his Carlsbad home with his wife Anne, 46, and 16-year-old daughter, Erin. The eldest of three children, he assumed a patriarchal role after his father died at 59. “He was like a father to me,” Laura said. “If there was ever an emergency in the family, he always was the first to try to fix it. . . Relatives of pilot James Bland, 52, gathered today at the home of his younger sister, Laura Bland, in Redondo Beach. “He always said this could happen,” Laura Bland said in a phone interview. “He lost a couple of friends in different accidents, but of anybody we knew, he was just so conscientious that we didn’t expect this at all.”
Our thoughts are with the Bland family and friends during this time of sadness.

Our favorite Carlsbadistan letter carrier Conrad Beck organized a a pretty big party at the Carlsbad Post Office today to celebrate that fact that today’s date (9-20-08) also happens to be our zip Code.
While Mayor Bud Lewis did not make the festivities as promised, nearly 70 people along with the Carlsbad Lancer Cheerleaders, Miss Carlsbad Dana Ducommon, the Army & Navy Academy Atkinson Warrior Marching Band and some of Carlsbad’s most appreciated postal workers (and family) did.
Lorraine Ludowsky, Sheila Mata, Lola’s Connie Trejo, Michelle, Michael Januzzi (starting center for the CHS football team), Cathy Kardas, the Post Office’s most senior employee Mack Mata, the youngest carrier C.C. Vallejo, Mike Alston, and Sharra Kliebenstein helped Conrad count-down to the big event at 9:20:08 AM.
Then it was all silly string and music from the Army & Navy Academy Atkinson Warrior Marching Band, free cake, and for a dollar all the philatelists in the crowd could get a special commemorative postcard with a custom cancellation stamp.

Carlsbad resident and renown trombonist Warren Brown died September 15, 2008 after a “lengthy illness.” He was 92.
Warren’s life was filled with music. He majored in music at the New York Military Academy and was a trombonist with his brother’s band Les Brown and the Band of Renown until he went into the Navy during World War II, According to a story on All About Jazz,
Upon discharge, he entered the business end of music and joined Leeds Music in New York City. . . . Because of his success as a song plugger, finding hit songs for many artists and overseeing many educational projects for Leeds, he was transferred to California to open and head the Leeds Music office there. The company sold to MCA and Warren served as Vice President of MCA Music, Inc., later to become Universal Music, until his retirement in 1981.

Looks like those who spoke out at recent area code hearings were heard as California Public Utilities Commission Judge Maribeth Bushey has ruled to allow current 760 area code holders to keep their area code while new numbers will have the 442 area code, according to a story on 10news.com.
The full five-member commission is scheduled to vote on Bushey’s ruling on Oct. 16. . . . Bushey presided over public hearings on the proposed change earlier this month in Carlsbad and Victorville.
New numbers get the new area code. Hard to believe that something so logical would require so much legal action.
