Judge Says No To Area Code Switch

by The Editors on September 17, 2008

Looks like those who spoke out at recent area code hearings were heard as California Public Utilities Commission Judge Maribeth Bushey has ruled to allow current 760 area code holders to keep their area code while new numbers will have the 442 area code, according to a story on 10news.com.

The full five-member commission is scheduled to vote on Bushey’s ruling on Oct. 16. . . . Bushey presided over public hearings on the proposed change earlier this month in Carlsbad and Victorville.

New numbers get the new area code. Hard to believe that something so logical would require so much legal action.

Vista Firefighter Saves Drowned Surfer

by The Editors on September 9, 2008

A Vista Firefighter who saw a surfboard “sticking up in the water” around 5PM tonight rescued a surfer who was apparently knocked out according to a story on Sign On San Diego.

The surfer may have hit his head on the ocean bottom off a stretch of city beach between two jetties south of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, Carlsbad police Lt. Marc Reno said. . . The firefighter tugged on the board’s leash, pulling the surfer up from the bottom, and started CPR.

The surfer was revived before being transported from Canon Park at 6 PM by San Diego’s copter 1 to a hospital.

No To Different Area Codes

by The Editors on September 3, 2008

AreacodemapWe all have one more opportunity to tell the California Public Utilities Commission what we think about their idea to change Carlsbadistan’s (and most of North County’s) area code to 442. The hearing will be held in Thursday, September 4, 2008 in Carlsbad’s City Council chambers from 4 to 7 p.m., 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.

Sadly, the options are not as simple as they sound. If the area code is not changed they’ll do what they call a “overlay” according to a Bradley J. Fikes story in the North County Times.

Under an overlay, currently assigned numbers in the region would remain the same. New numbers would get the 442 area code. In addition, the overlay would require dialing the full 10-digit number in the region, even to a number across town or across the street. . . . Scott Chatfield, a leader of the movement to stop the 442 split, said those opposing the split need to be aware that an overlay is the only option the commission will consider under hearing rules. Requests to reverse the split —- to leave North County in 760 and impose 442 in the rest of the territory —- will not be heard.

Maybe the overlay would be best. We’re dialing 10 digit numbers most of the time anyway. Save the 760.

Pole Position: The $5 Million Fire Station

by The Editors on August 28, 2008

After nearly 20 years in a “temporary” double-wide firestation the Carlsbad Fire Department has finally moved into their new 6,200-square-foot facility on Rancho Santa Fe Road. And the coolest part: this station has a fire pole, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Most Southern California stations are one story,” so they don’t need fire poles, said Carlsbad Battalion Chief Jim Torretto, who oversees facilities for the city Fire Department. . . . He said that despite the pole, there won’t be any scenes of firefighters jumping out of bed at the sound of an alarm, diving into turnout gear and sliding down the pole.

We’re glad they have the station they need, and we’re pretty sure those clever firemen will find at least one good use for that fire pole. . .

No Poop Actually Reached The Beach

by The Editors on August 12, 2008

After closing Carlsbad State Beach on Sunday morning, city wastewater chief Don Wasko says no sewage actually reached the beach, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Triubne.

. . . none of the sewage actually reached the beach because it flowed into a street gutter and city crews helped vacuum it up. The beach closure, he said, was “erring on the side of caution.”

We whole heartedly approve of erring on the side of caution when it comes to sewage and the beach. Sadly, this didn’t keep Encinitas from having similar problems at Moonlight Beach.

Big Aquarium Opens At Legoland

by The Editors on August 12, 2008

Sealife11-1

Carlsbad Legoland’s newest attraction opened yesterday (August 11, 2008) with the help of actor Cristian de la Fuente. The new Sea Life Aquarium has the distinction of reportedly being the “first Aquarium in the U.S. to incorporate LEGO® models.” Obviously, they never saw our fourth grade science aquarium that was literally loaded with Lego blocks from our secret “fish bombing” runs.

The mission of SEA LIFE Aquarium is to immerse guests in an interactive, educational and fun aquarium experience while increasing awareness of the importance of safeguarding the sea and its inhabitants. As guests explore the 36,000 square-foot, two-story Aquarium, they’ll discover 36 displays holding more than 250,000 gallons of water. Key features throughout 14 themed rooms include the Discovery Zone, where guests interact with marine life experts, touch tide pool animals and take an inside look at the lives of sea creatures from special pop-up viewing stations; the Shoaling Ring, where guests are surrounded 360 degrees by schools of swimming fish; and the Ray Lagoon where several species of rays appear to “fly” through the water in Mayan temple ruins.

We haven’t been in there yet, but we are looking forward to it.

Sammy’s Accidental Gas Explosion

by The Editors on August 5, 2008

080730Sammys Woodfire380Thanks to some investigational help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms the fire that caused nearly $1 million in damages to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza has been officially ruled accidental.

A natural gas leak sparked an explosion and fire that consumed the Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas, just north of Palomar Airport Road, according to authorities.

Guess the economy hasn’t gotten that bad just yet. Phew!

West Nile Strikes Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on August 2, 2008

A 38-year-old Carlsbad woman has been hospitalized for “treatment of meningitis after developing symptoms of West Nile virus, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.”

Most people infected with the virus display no symptoms. About 20 percent suffer headaches, fatigue, fever, nausea, skin rash or swollen glands. Symptoms can become serious in older patients, or in people with weakened immune systems.

There were 15 human cases in San Diego County last year according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. And we’re up to three so far this year. Be sure to sport that insect repellant if you’re going to be out with the mosquitos.

Rockin’ The Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on July 29, 2008

These are the kinds of stories everyone already knows about because we all felt it (well most of us), but we’ve got to log it anyway. The 5.8 Chino earthquake was felt up and down the coast this morning around 11:40 AM. “It rocked and rolled for a while,” one resident told us. “But nothing fell or broke in our house. It was more of a rattle.”

Up at Callaway Golf employees said they got a serious rocking according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Barb West . . . said, “It rocked our world.” . . . She said the temblor wasn’t severe enough to topple desktop objects, but “in our headquarters building where I’m located, we could feel it shake under our desks.”

We noticed there were earthquakes in the South Pacific and Japan in the last 24 hours and we’re kind of hoping that the ring of fire isn’t getting ready to let something serious loose.

This morning commuters on South I-5 were treated to billowing black smoke and bumper to bumper traffic as Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas cooked up a little more than delicious pizza.

A Carlsbad police officer working traffic duty in front of the restaurant heard an explosion about 8 a.m. and called in the emergency. Forty-eight firefighters from Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista were called to the scene. . . .the fire started in the back of the restaurant where the kitchen, electrical panels and gas lines are located, Carlsbad Fire Marshal James Weigand said.

The fire caused $1 million in damages. Luckily, no one was injured.
