Hard to believe it’s over, but what better way to shut down the 25th anniversary season of Carlsbadistan’sTGIF Jazz in the Park than with the Blu-ro-so-funk of Earl Thomas playing Calavera Park.
His 1991 major label debut Blue . . . Not Blues blended the sensuality of Stax soul with the grittiness of modern electric blues, but the real indication of his talent is the power of his voice and his knack for crafting memorable contemporary blues and this is what made Earl Thomas one of the most highly respected blues artists in the world.
And he’s playing Carlsbadistan. Earl Thomas is your last chance this summer. He is likely the best vocalist to Carlsbadistan in years. Don’t put TGIF Jazz in the Park off any longer. Just go. Show starts at 6 PM.
As musical partner of blues diva Candye Kane, Sue Palmer has seen the world from both sides of the keyboard. This Friday night (August 14, 2010), however, she will see our backsides shaking to the boogie woogie blues of her Motel Swing Orchestra and they cast a spell on Carlsbadistan’sCalavera Park.
San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sue Palmer, has amazed audiences all over the world with her unique style and phenomenal left hand. She delights in creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the small clubs and cafes of 1932 Paris, Harlem, West Texas and Hawaii.
Prepare to be amazed. Show starts at 6 PM. You know the drill.
For those few of you who haven’t had a Bill Magee experience, don’t hesitate to get out there and see this band! This group delivers some of the finest blues you’ll ever hear and it was enough to get music fans of all ages dancing and air guitaring.
No doubt Magee is one of Carlsbadistan’s favorites. Show starts at 6 PM.
From his first recordings as a leader in 1967 fronting The Dirty Blues Band, through his multiple W.C. Handy Award winning with his current band The Mighty Flyers, to his countless appearances both live and on record with legendary blues figures, Piazza has set a standard for harmonica virtuosity that has established him as one of the most influential living blues harp players.
Don’t blow it. Get in the park by 6 PM and get ready to get blue.
The Screamin’ Primas are apparently a tribute band to a “rat pack” era performer of whom we had never heard. Oh, we’d heard his legendary songs like Jump Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, and That Old Black Magic, but we’d never heard the name Louis Prima. Now, thanks to TGIF Jazz in the Park on Friday, July 23, 2010 those who make it to Poinsettia Park will know his music just a little better.
Last year, their TGIF debut offered a wacky version of Prima’s late 1950s Las Vegas Night Club show featuring his acclaimed singer-wife Keely Smith that captured all the energy, emotion and excitement of the original.
Wacky jazz works. We guess. Show begins at 6 PM in Carlsbadistan’sPoinsettia Park. Don’t be late.
Those who thought the whole summer of TGIF Jazz in the Park was going to be a re-run of past seasons will be surprised to know that this Friday’s (July 16, 2010) Poinsettia Park performance by Louie Cruz Beltran will be a first for the Latin percussionist and his band. The Silver Lake News said:
Louie Cruz Beltran and His Latin Jazz Ensemble perform a sizzling blend of Brazilian style and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Louie’s ability to adapt his sound has allowed him to tour internationally and to work in many different styles with such great performers as Pete Escovedo, Starrfire and The Sylvers.
Poinsettia Park (click for Google map) could use a little sizzle this summer. Show starts at 6 PM. Bring your bug spray and you’re dancing shoes.
We’ve all known that the secret to great guitar playing is the having the right filter. We’ve never had the right filter, but now thanks to the Museum of Making MusicCarlsbadistan’s teen guitarist will have the chance to learn it all from Joe Bigham on July 17, during the Get your Signature Sound teen workshop.
Students will experiment with stompboxes to learn how to manipulate sound through pedals and guitar techniques. Students will learn how to order, combine, and control multiple effects in traditional and unique ways. This workshop will give young musicians ideas and techniques to identify the sounds of artists they admire, and craft their own signature sound.
Maybe we’ll finally learn that solo part from Boston’s More Than A Feeling. . . wait, did they say “teen workshop?”
Class begins July 17, 2010 at 2 PM and costs $15 ($10 for members). All participants get a free “Art of the Stompbox” poster. Sign up now. Click the link.
If Carlsbadistan were ever to name the kings of TGIF Jazz In The Park it would no doubt crown Warren Lovell’sBig Time Operator. This big beat, jazz, lounge band has played 11 of the 25 and on Friday July 9, 2010 they’re going to be swingin’ up Stagecoach Park again with their big band sound.
Led by singer Warren Lovell, this ten piece band has the class and excitement to make your event memorable. . . Winners of the 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 San Diego Music Awards for Best Big Band, and the 1998 Jim Croces Excellence in Entertainment Award. Big Time Operator excels at playing classic big band arrangements, latin arrangements, and impressive original songs. They are true to the past and yet completely contemporary Entertainers Extraordinaire!
They’ve “got a rhythmn stingin’ hot, they’re going to put you on the spot.” Show starts at 6 PM. Martinis are highly encouraged.
We have to admit that much of Carlsbadistan’sTGIF Jazz in the Park is deja vu all over again. (This is probably the second or third time we’ve said that, too.) But with Friday’s (July 2, 2010) concert by Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca it kind of makes sense.
When Lemvo takes the stage at Stagecoach Park he will be playing Jazz in the Park for the fourth time. And that tells us a couple things: One, Carlsbadistan loves Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca, and more importantly Lemvo apparently loves Carlsbadistan as well.
For those who’ve missed it here’s the short version:
Lemvo is a Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry who is “the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo. . . Since forming his Los Angeles-based band Makina Loca in 1990, Lemvo has refined his craft and vision, raising his joyous voice with strength, singing songs that celebrate life, and most importantly, inspiring his audiences to let loose and dance away their worries.
We’ve probably said this before, too, but if you’re only going to attend one Jazz in the Park this summer, it should probably be this one.
