Grand Bar Puncher Gets Paid

by The Editors on May 7, 2008

A Vista jury awarded New York Yankees fan Mario Melendez $25,000 in his lawsuit against Red Socks fan David Sanborn of Oceanside on Tuesday. The lawsuit centered about a baseball rivalry fight on July 3, 2006 at Carlsbad’s Grand Avenue Bar & Grill.

No criminal charges were filed in the case, but Melendez sued for damages in Vista Superior Court – for injuring his hand when he punched Sanborn. . . .“He grabbed me and picked me up,” he told jurors. “I really thought he was going to body-slam me.”

Sanborn said Melendez challenged him to a fight, then sucker-punched him. According to court records, Sanborn’s attorneys argued that Melendez “consented” to the fight, which lasted a few seconds, ending when Melendez punched Sanborn.

While both men claim slightly different versions of the story it seems that the jury agreed with Melendez’s version. And the puncher got paid.

Selfportrait-1As fans of The Cheap Lei’s and of Adrian Demain (as both a skateboarder and musician) we have to mention that he is playing at Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill tonight at 8 PM.

We would have liked to posted this a few days ago, but for some reason we haven’t been keeping up on the Hensley’s music schedule. We’re going to blame it on them.

Lumiére Hotel Brings Down The Roof

by The Editors on March 20, 2008

Banner Lumierecarlsbad

We’ve caught the Parthenon’s glow during a roof-top dinner at The Fresh Hotel, cringed as Hollywood stars hit on Canadians from a waterbed on the roof of The Standard Hotel, and waved from the deck of Mr. A’s as jet airliners flapped past. We’ve even shared a pitcher on the roof of the old Margarita Rocks in Oceanside, but we’ve never, ever watched the sun set from a roof-top restaurant in Carlsbadistan. That may change when the new Lumiére Carlsbad Village Hotel goes in on Ocean St. at Offshore.

Lumeirelumière hotel group is currently entitling a proposed four story, fifty-five key ocean front hotel in Carlsbad, California featuring an opulent rooftop restaurant, lounge, and pool with unforgettable views of the Pacific Ocean. We will be offering a small number of oceanfront residences for purchase.

According to the project description filed with The City, the hotel will feature 39 hotel rooms, 10 condominiums, and two affordable apartments (you know, for the help). We haven’t seen the plans yet, so we really have no idea what the hotel will look like, but either way, it will be cool to look out over the Paciic from a rooftop restaurant in Carlsbad.

The St. Patrick’s Day Bar Blotter

by The Editors on March 19, 2008

We thought St. Patricks day would be a nice time to kick off a new feature on Carlsbadistan. We’re calling it the Bar Blotter. Each report will feature all the police activities at Carlsbadistan bars. Here’s how it went the evening of March 17-18, 2008, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

08:21 PM Dini’s: Location cited for being “overcrowded.”

10:27 PM Coyote Bar: Some parties needed separating.

10:36 PM Alley Bar: Noted, but nothing reported.

10:43 PM Alley Bar: Noted, but nothing reported.

11:09 PM Boars Crossing: Man cited for dropping his cigarette ashes on the ground in violation of California Penal Code 23111

11:19 PM Peabody’s: Subjects were fighting inside Peabody’s. Parties were separated now, but suspect still on the scene.

And that’s it. Looks like it was another good night in Carlsbadistan.

St. Patrick’s At Hensley’s Flying Elephant

by The Editors on March 17, 2008

Hensleys 31708

It’s cool of places like Hensley’s Flying Elephant to help people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day even if they can’t do it up on Monday. Hensley’s is throwing down the same party two days in a row so no one misses out, and other celebrate for 48. Today, beginning at 2 PM it’s The Bad Blokes (Traditional Irish “foot stomping” tunes are blended with covers from popular Irish rock groups like The Pogues, Waterboys, Young Dubliners and Gaelic Storm) and then from 5 to 10 PM it’s Skelpin.

Dini’s Front Patio Is Always Loaded

by The Editors on March 16, 2008

Dinis 31608

Those looking to roll into St. Patrick’s Day smoothly have already posted up on the patio at Dini’s on Coast Highway. For people who enjoy watching the sun set with a good drink in their hand, Dini’s is always the place. Just be careful, their cocktails are so well-crafted that they can (and occasionally do) sneak up on you. Which can be trouble, especially when you’re peddling your Electra cruiser home.
