The race itself went great, even though they ended up shortening the swim by 400 meters due to hypothermia in the women’s race the day before. I was actually 15th out of the transition area and started reeling people in one by one on the hilly bike course. I averaged 23 mph on the bike and finally overtook the number two guy on the last loop. . .

On Sunday June 29, 2008 the National Football League kicked off it’s 12th Annual Rookie Symposium right here in Carlsbad. That means that 252 new NFL players are in Carlsbadistan for four days to learn everything they can about what it means to be a professional football player.
On Monday the players will hear presentations on substance abuse (particularly steroid policy and awareness) and financial advice. Tuesday, the focus is a youth football clinic and player conduct. The symposium concludes Wednesday with a sex education guide (particularly an HIV overview) and life skills emphasis.
Sounds like helpful info. Hopefully, some of our kind Carlsbadistan manners will rub off on them. The conference ends tomorrow (July 2, 2008)
Former Carlsbad High School surf team member and current top UCSD distance runners Bre Schofield got a little profile (and photo shown above) in yesterday’s Today’s Local News. The 19 year old seems to have an amazingly bright future ahead of her in track and field.
When she’s not at MiraCosta College for a summer philosophy class or online completing a geology course, Schofield spends most of her time preparing for a new challenge: the upcoming women’s cross country season. . . . “It’s not often that a college athlete gets to practice a new sport,” said the 5-foot-4, 115-pound Schofield, who blossomed as one of UCSD’s top track distance runners last season. “It’s something new not being on the track, so it’s going to be twice as exciting to see what I can do.”
Congrats, Bre. We hope training goes well and that you have time to surf every once in a while. Because nothing should get in the way of your surfing.
Thanks to brake trouble Carlsbadistan’s NASCAR racer Boris Said had a bad day at Infineon Raceway on Sunday. After starting in 14th position, he flipped it and finished in 41st.
Before coming into the season’s first Sprint Cup road race, Said was looking to overturn his unlucky year of racing. But on Lap 3 of the scheduled 110-lap race, the front brakes on Said’s No. 60 7-Eleven No Fear/Slurpee Ford Fusion were starting to fail. . . . “When the brake pedal went to the floor on the third lap, I knew we had a big problem,” explained Said, who qualified 14th. “Our car started the race just as strong as we were in practice yesterday. But a component failure cut our day short.”
Said’s next race will be a 400 miler in Daytona. We hope things go better there.
Said’s less-than-full-throttle run was the 14th fastest and he will start the road course event from outside of Row 7. His No. 60 7-Eleven No Fear/Slurpee Ford Fusion recorded a time and speed of 78.568 seconds at 91.182 miles per hour. Kasey Kahne won the pole with a speed of 92.153.
“I stuck to our game plan and I’m glad I did,” offered Said. “I’m a racer and I want to go fast. That’s why it’s mentally difficult when you’re only going 75-80 percent and know you have a car that can challenge for a front row spot. When you’re one of the go or go home teams, you just can’t take a chance by going full throttle.”
Now we can watch Boris go full-throttle on Sunday at 12:30 PM on TNT.
In what has to be one of the biggest culture clashes in sport NASCAR hits the wine country this weekend when the Sprint Cup hits the Infineon Raceway.
In addition to the traditional left hand turns Infineon also be right hand turns and changes in elevation. All of this is good from Carlsbadistan’s own NASCAR driver Boris Said if he can qualify in today’s qualification runs.
Sonoma also gives fans of Boris Said, the so-called “Said Heads,” another chance to cheer the Carlsbad driver and road-course specialist with the mop of curly hair. . . .Said has four top-10 finishes in eight starts at Sonoma. But he doesn’t have enough points this season to automatically start in Sunday’s 43-car field, so he’ll have to qualify his No. 60 Ford today.
If Boris makes it in the race we might even watch it on TNT at 12:30 PM on Sunday.
When baseball player Dan Giese, 31, retired after six years playing minor league baseball, he moved to Carlsbad and began selling used cars, according to a story on AFP. But that wasn’t the end of his baseball career. This Saturday Giese will get his first major league start as he stands in for Taiwanese hurler Chien-Ming Wang when the Yankees take on the Cincinnati Reds.
In Carlsbad you never know who you’re dealing with.
If you’re into BMX this is amazing. If you’re not, it’s probably right up there with the world’s longest fingernails. We’re just glad Carlsbadistan’sKevin Robinson didn’t have to bleed for RedBull and that he pulled it off in NYC. Congrats, K-Rob.
On June 12, 2008 Carlsbadistan BMXer Kevin Robinson, 36, will be in New York’s central park attempting to break Mat Hoffman’s quarterpipe BMX air record of 50 feet, 6 inches as part of the Red Bull Experiment series, according to a Scott Bair story in the North County Times.
“I’m not going to lie. I’m scared, but that’s what riding’s all about,” said Robinson, who has undergone several major surgeries during his career. “If you’re not scared, you tend not to respect the situation. . . . The main thing is to be able to cross the fear barrier regardless of the consequences. No matter what, there are times where you’re scared as hell to drop in and try a new trick, but you roll in anyway. The result could end up fine or you could end up getting hurt. There’s always that uncertainty, but you have to push through it.”
And we can all watch it live on EXPN.com from 5-6pm PST on Thursday. Hopefully, it won’t be another Jake Brown incident. But if it is, just think how much coverage RedBull will get? Follow the jump for a video preview.
The current number one ranking belongs to Eric Pao Pao who was tested at the Carlsbad location. Three other athletes from Velocity Carlsbad where also in the top 12 they include: Michael Leonard, King Holder, and Aaron Harris.
