Professional Tennis Moving Out Of Carlsbad

by The Editors on June 3, 2013

Show Image 248It appears that the La Costa Resort & Spa is no longer interested in hosting the their annual Women’s Tennis Association tournament after 2013’s Southern California Open, according to a story on 10balls.com.

Daily Tennis News has learned that the La Costa resort, where the event is staged, does not want to host the event beyond 2013, which makes it very likely that the tournament will move out of San Diego County, as there are no private facilities that are big enough to be able to host a WTA Premier level tournament.

Guess that means if you want to see pro tennis locally, you better go this year. Click here to buy tickets for 2013. For the rest of the story, click the link.

Friends of Eric Ringdahl, the cyclist who was hit and killed while riding his bike Sunday morning, April 23, 2013 have placed a ghost bike near the site of the collision, according to a story in the UT San Diego.

Ringdahl’s friends and members of the local bicycling community put up the ghost bike, said family friend Elizabeth Sugarman. About 15 people turned out Saturday to leave flowers, photos and share a quiet moment to honor Ringdahl at the roadside remembrance.

They are sad to see, however, ghost bikes are a constant reminder to both motorists and cyclists that we all need to share the road.

The 150 abled and challenged riders who left San Francisco, California on Saturday, October 13, 2012 for the 2012 Dodge Million Dollar Challenge rolled through Carlsbadistan this morning (October 19, 2012), before ending their journey in La Jolla, California having ridden 620 miles down the California Coast in only six days.

The riders, who had full support, ate great meals, and stayed in five-star hotels along the way, helped raise more than $1 million for the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation.

Former participant and professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde says that ride was an inspiration:

“It was one of the most rewarding weeks of cycling I have ever experienced,” he said. “It was amazing to ride for a cause that helps change the lives of so many athletes, and gives them the chance to enjoy what we do every day. In the end, I think I left the most inspired of all.”

Several Carlsbadistan based businesses helped sponsor the ride including Life Technologies, SKLZ, and Spy Optic. For more information on how you can ride the coast next year or help someone who is riding, click the link.

Cyclist Scott Folck, 35, an Engineering Manager at Taylor Made Golf in Carlsbad died Sunday, September 23, 2012 from injuries he sustained after being struck by a car while riding his bike on Wood Valley Road in Valley Center, California at approximately 6 AM on Sunday, September 16, 2012. According to the U-T San Diego:

California Highway Patrol officials said a 22-year-old motorist from San Marcos was attempting to make a left turn onto Cool Water Ranch when he turned in front of Folck. The driver applied his brakes when he saw the bicyclist but was unable to avoid him. . . Folck’s bicycle ran into the right front of the driver’s Mitsubishi 3000GT and was thrown to the ground. . . CHP officials are investigating the incident. They have said they do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Cyclists who frequent the Swami’s Cycling Club training rides through Carlsbad knew Folck very well and most saw only the back of his Adams Avenue Bicycles Team kit. On Monday the Swami’s Cycling Twitter feed sent out the following message: “Scott was a great guy and a good friend of Swamis. We’ll miss him on the morning rides.”

Folck is survived by his wife, Sheryl Lynn Talmage Folck; stepson, Shane; his father; his mother; his sister, Christine, and several other relatives. Click here for his complete obituary.

Cycling friends of Folck’s will gather at 7 AM Friday, September 28, 2012 at Fletcher Cove for a “low-key pedal along the coast to simply show some solidarity in remembrance of Scott.”
