Brick Or Treating At Legoland All Month

by The Editors on October 8, 2008

Brick Or Treat

While the name “Brick-Or-Treat” tends to make us think of kids weilding bricks to threaten home-owners into handing over the candy, it’s actually a fun family Halloween event being held all month at Legoland. Lego brick? Get it?

The theme park’s annual family-friendly Halloween celebration, presented by Union Bank of California, also commemorated its first-ever Brick-or-Treat Party Nights nighttime event with a special visit from nearly 600 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and San Marcos. This year, the Park hosts
Party Nights every Saturday in October from 5 to 9 p.m.

Just look at all those smiling faces. Brick-or-Treat only tickets are available after 5 PM. For more info click the link.

A Really Fast, Funny Trip Through Shakespeare

by The Editors on August 25, 2008

Shakespeare

If you haven’t seen it already, you have only five more chances to check out the New Village Arts Theatre’s hilarious production of The Compete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) featuring the world’s fastest performance of Hamlet on record, “clocking in at 43 seconds. We’re thinking we can beat the record,” they say.

The Complete Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged) was written by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, and first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987. Within the span of the evening every single Shakespeare play is covered as well as a nod given to the sonnets.

Shows are free to subscribers and “pay-what-you-can” for everyone else. The show closes on Aug. 21, however, there are still show this Thursday through Saturday night at 8 PM with a matinee on Saturday at 3 PM and Sunday at 2 PM.

Big Aquarium Opens At Legoland

by The Editors on August 12, 2008

Sealife11-1

Carlsbad Legoland’s newest attraction opened yesterday (August 11, 2008) with the help of actor Cristian de la Fuente. The new Sea Life Aquarium has the distinction of reportedly being the “first Aquarium in the U.S. to incorporate LEGO® models.” Obviously, they never saw our fourth grade science aquarium that was literally loaded with Lego blocks from our secret “fish bombing” runs.

The mission of SEA LIFE Aquarium is to immerse guests in an interactive, educational and fun aquarium experience while increasing awareness of the importance of safeguarding the sea and its inhabitants. As guests explore the 36,000 square-foot, two-story Aquarium, they’ll discover 36 displays holding more than 250,000 gallons of water. Key features throughout 14 themed rooms include the Discovery Zone, where guests interact with marine life experts, touch tide pool animals and take an inside look at the lives of sea creatures from special pop-up viewing stations; the Shoaling Ring, where guests are surrounded 360 degrees by schools of swimming fish; and the Ray Lagoon where several species of rays appear to “fly” through the water in Mayan temple ruins.

We haven’t been in there yet, but we are looking forward to it.

Carlsbad Magazine Counts It Down

by The Editors on July 3, 2008

Cbadmag708The new issue of Carlsbad Magazine features a list of the Top 10 things to do in Carlsbad. What’s number one? The editors really reached on this one: The Beach. Apparently, there are “at least 10 different things to do at the beach.”

The only actually interesting thing on the list is the Museum of Making Music, and it was number seven. Oh, and number 10? Shopping. Right.

For the real goods check out the story on the Locals’ Top 25. That list is for people who enjoy Carlsbadistan.

A couple activities, however, were apparently left off both lists. Here are a few of them:

  1. Get all mellow and post artistic observations to a blog.
  2. Ride a cruiser home drunk from Dinis
  3. Talk loudly about how rad things used to be on the patio at Pizza Port.
  4. Set up lawnchairs and umbrellas with all your salty buddies and oogle young mom’s as they push strollers past OffShore.
  5. Park your monsterous motorcoach on top of the seawall, put all your furniture on the lawn (including your TV, electric grill, and inflatable pool), and pretend you live here.
  6. Set off fireworks every night of the year, just when people are getting to sleep.
  7. Let your dog take huge, runny dumps on the sidewalk and then leave them there for everyone to admire.
  8. Speed up and down Coast Highway in your 2007 Chevy Malibu and gas it whenever you see people stepping into a crosswalk.
  9. Get into late-night arguments with your boy/girlfriend outside someone else’s window at 1:30 in the morning.
  10. Spend the day sitting at Starbucks frightening people with your leering, creepy glances.
  11. Let all five of your dogs loose to run on the beach.
  12. Have a romantic Carl’s Jr. dinner on the beach, then leave all your trash on the sand.
  13. Race up Garfield like you’re in the Indy 500.
  14. Kayak into the lineup at Tamarack.
  15. Yell into your cellphone during dinner at Jay’s Gourmet.
  16. And at least once a month, move your bowels under the Hemlock Stairs.

There’s more, but we really need to go get some coffee.

June 28 Is Family Day At The Lagoon

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

Batlag

We’re at a bit of a loss with the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation’s Family Day tomorrow from 3 – 5 PM at the visitor center. Isn’t it always family day on Carlsbadistan’s hiking trails?

The San Diego Union-Tribune says there will be a “scavenger hunt followed by light refreshments,” but a visit to the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center’s website gives no illuminating information other than saying “bring the kids.”

Carlsbad’s Cadillacs Of Comedy

by The Editors on June 5, 2008

ApWant to laugh your ass off this weekend without leaving Carlsbadistan? Well, comics Don Friesen (pictured right), Anthony Griffith, and Mark Anderson are putting on a show at the Carlsbad Village Theatre that is supposed to be quite funny. At least that’s what the Pasadena Weekly says.

The Cadillacs of Comedy is a fun way to bring live standup comedy to theater-going crowds — crowds that might otherwise not be inclined to come out to a show in a club and alcohol-driven atmosphere. . . . “Ideally we offer a show that will bring you to tears with laughter, but is clever and classy enough that you would be comfortable recommending it to anyone… It’s also a rare chance to work with other top headliners who are typically too busy headlining their own venues to get a chance to work together on the same bill,” he said.

“The Cadillacs of Comedy” is performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (all summer long) at the Carlsbad Village Theatre, 2822 State St., Carlsbad. Tickets are $15. Call (760) 434-5922.

Legoland’s Land of Adventure Opens

by The Editors on March 13, 2008

Loa20We’ve written about this before, but on March 10, 2008 Legoland California officially opened their newest theme section: The Land of Adventure.

A real live camel staring at his own LEGO image, a dancing snake charmer and a 16-foot tall LEGO Pharaoh weren’t the only surprises at LEGOLAND California today as the family theme park unveiled Land of Adventure. The brand new area opens just in time for spring break with four new attractions including the park’s first-ever dark ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure.

“Taking such a popular LEGO series and making it into an interactive area for families with children 2 to 12 has been an incredible experience,” says Master Model Designer Bill Vollbrecht who was a lead designer of the new area. “I am honored to have worked with the Merlin Entertainments Creative Team from beginning to end transporting guests into 1920s Egypt.” Vollbrecht even studied Egyptian history and hieroglyphics to make Land of Adventure more authentic, entertaining and educational.

Lego would also like to remind everyone that this is only part of it’s planned $20 million in improvement this year. The “two-story 36,000 square foot” Sea Life Aquarium will open in July. We are seriously looking forward to checking this new zone out and are guessing that this alone would be a great reason to visit the park, if you (like us) haven’t been there since New Year’s 2007. Follow the jump for the entire press release.

Getting Blown On The Coast In A Biplane

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Biplane 2 1 Ezg 1

If we hadn’t overheard two gated-community moms discussing windy, open-cockpit plane rides over the coast while their children were in swim lessons, we probably would have missed this story on a business at the Carlsbadistan Airport.

In addition to biplanes, Barnstorming Adventures (800/759-5667 or barnstorming.com) offers aerobatic rides in a WWII war-bird plane. Or, thrillseekers can play out a dogfight in two Varga air-combat planes. Biplane flights start at $199 for one or two people; war-bird and dogfight flights cost more. . . The company’s Sunset Special Fly/Dine package for two ($569) includes a 60-minute sunset flight, followed by a three-course meal at the nearby Four Seasons Aviara Vivace restaurant.

As one woman said, “The only thing we kept thinking about while on the flight is that we don’t have wills.” Point taken.

One Big Jaw Breaker On Display

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

The-American-MastodonThe Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center is displaying the jaw and tusk of a Mastodon that was found in Carlsbad last June (2007).

The ancient mammal’s tusk and jaw bones are on display at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center, at Faraday Avenue and Cannon Road, through July. . . .The fossils are owned by the San Diego Natural History Museum, whose team of paleontologists discovered mastodon bones June 14 when earth movers were grading land for a housing development at El Camino Real and Cannon Road in Carlsbad.

Or maybe you’re not interested in dead elephant bones.

The Flower Fields Open March 1

by The Editors on February 26, 2008

Picture Pavilion

Maybe is was the Friday monsoon (we’ll blame it), that kept us from even thinking that The Flower Fields will be opening on Saturday March 1, 2008 for their annual Ranunculus run. This year, the Fields will stay open until May 11, but don’t let that stop you from getting in on all the color early.

You will get to view the 50-plus acres of breathtaking Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, abundant roses in the All American Rose Garden, the world famous Ecke poinsettias and tour the entire ranch on an exciting tractor ride that is fun for the whole family, young and old.

We’re just glad it’s not a outlet mall parking lot.
