Oprah.com Suggests Legoland

by The Editors on February 27, 2009

20090220 Orig Legoland 350X263.JpgIn a feature on why it might be a good idea to vacation a little closer to home titled “Wacky Family Attractions,” Oprah.com is suggesting that people visit Legoland.

If you’re a kid at heart, plan a trip to an amusement park inspired by one of America’s all-time favorite toys—the LEGO®! This 128-acre park features 15,000 LEGO models made up of more than 35 million bricks. From a Brontosaurus named Bronte to a tiny rabbit in a magician’s hat, these creations are worth the price of admission.

We agree.

Stand Up Fishermen Land In LA Times

by The Editors on February 17, 2009

Supfishing

Carlsbadistan’s Calvin Toms and Chris Perret (pictured above) ended up on Pete Thomas’ LA Times blog for catching some pretty nice fish while angling from their stand-up surfboards.

Stand-up fishing has new meaning for a couple of Carlsbad anglers, who recently visited Rancho Leonero in Baja California’s East Cape region and tackled several big-game species while atop surfboards designed for stand-up paddling. . . . That’s Calvin Toms (above) with a nice roosterfish, and Chris Perret (below) with a very impressive sierra mackerel, which presumably was prepared as ceviche for an afternoon snack by the sleepy resort’s chef.

Wonder if Toms and Perrit know that for a little more money could buy a boat with a motor and stand up and fish in it any time they wanted? They must, right?

Carlsbadistan Invades Tavarua

by The Editors on October 28, 2008

Tavi

Just got this photo from a Carlsbadistan reader who is currently riding perfect waves in Fiji, near an island called Tavarua. See that wave? It’s called Restaurants. If you’re nice it will barrel you, if you’re not it will cut you up.

If you’d like to take some Carlsbadistan stickers on your next trip click here and we’ll send you a bunch of ’em. Then just snap a photo of you with the sticker, email it to us, and we’ll put you up right here.

Sheraton’s Global Out of Office Day

by The Editors on September 15, 2008

Link Sheraton

Today, the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa is celebrating Global Out-of-Office Day to promote their new Link@Sheraton experienced with Microsoft. Eight Carlsbad businesses will reportedly spend the day “working” out on the Palm Court Lawn outside the hotel and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our guess at the businesses involved? Real Estate. . . since sitting out on the lawn is about all they can do these days.

Designed as a social destination, the Link@Sheraton invites guests to interact with each other while they check their email, research local attractions and even print boarding passes using free Wi-Fi and Internet-enabled computer stations.

We’re guessing this is just a new Sheraton business center, but the thought of business people working “out on the lawn” has peaked our interest. We think we’ll roll over later and see how many “executives” have survived.

Carlsbad Travel Planner Arrives

by The Editors on May 10, 2008

Gi 0 08CarlsbadcoverimageWe often wonder what the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau does. Not because we think they don’t do anything, but more out of plain, simple ignorance. For instance, where is the Carlsbad Convention Center? But we’re wandering from the point: The new Carlsbad Travel Planner has arrived.

The vibrant 40-page magazine-style Guide is filled with helpful information such as lodging accommodations, restaurants, shopping, local attractions (LEGOLAND, Leo Carrillo Park, The Village), outdoor fun, special events (Carlsbad 5K, ArtSplash, Village Faire, Carlsbad Marathon) and, of course, directions on “how to get to the beach!” Stunning photography and directional maps provide the perfect complement to this year’s Guide.

The CCVB printed 80,000 copies of the guide proving that at least in Carlsbad people still believe in the printed word regardless of the fact that most of the planners will probably sit in boxes all year. If anyone notices an increase in business based on their advertising in the planner, please let us know.

US Airways Pulling Out of Carlsbad

by The Editors on January 17, 2008

Blaming rising oil prices, US Airways announced Wednesday January 16, that they will no longer be offering up daily roundtrip flights to Phoenix from McClellan-Palomar Airport, according to a story in the North County Times. Company spokesman Morgan Durrant said they have no plans to reinstate service “In the near future.”

“It just didn’t make sense, looking at the proximity of the San Diego International Airport,” Durrant said. “We’ve got a lot of folks here who scrutinize markets and our service and aircraft allocation. … It seems to be the way it’s going to be for a while.”

We wish we could say we were going to miss US Air, but honestly, in our experience they have been the worst airline in terms of equipment failures and delays. In fact, according to a July report on twenty airlines only five were worse that US Air when it comes to being on time. Their on-time percentage was only 66.3. In their defense, Mesa Airlines, the company that ran the Carlsbad to Phoenix route ranked number five on the list.

A Little Of What We Saw Yesterday. . .

by The Editors on December 12, 2007

Other than the fact that Taylor Knox got fourth place in his first heat, this really has nothing to do with Carlsbadistan. But we shot it, so peep it if you want. It’s day one of the 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters from the North Shore of Oahu.

Carlsbad Airport Getting New Terminal

by The Editors on November 20, 2007

Air Term

According to the North County Times, construction has begun on a brand spanking new terminal at the McClellan-Palomar Airport that will apparently replace the shack and two mobile homes that currently comprise the airport’s facilities.

The $26 million terminal will be six times larger than Palomar’s existing facility and will include larger and more technologically advanced ticketing and baggage screening areas, a more spacious lobby, a boarding lounge, a restaurant and three new parking lots, according to a conceptual plan posted on the airport Web site. . . A new 420-space parking lot will be built nearby to replace those covered by the new building. Taken together with two existing parking lots, the airport will have more than 700 spots when the project is complete.

The construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2009. We’re just hoping the parking stays free and the casual atmosphere is not completely lost. There really is nothing better than skipping Lindberg Field entirely.

Surf Academy Owner Robbed In Baja

by The Editors on November 14, 2007

Pat Weber, the owner of the Carslbad-based San Diego Surfing Academy, decided to escape the fires last month by taking his girlfriend to Baja for a short surf trip at Cuatro Casas. Things only got worse once they got into Mexico, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Just after sundown Oct. 23, two men wearing military clothing and ski masks confronted the couple. Weber said he initially refused to come out of his motor home, but surrendered after the robbers fired a shot into the vehicle. “They made us get down on all fours – execution position – and put guns to our heads. . . The gunmen sexually assaulted his girlfriend before stealing $10,000 worth of computers, video cameras and other gear, he said.

Weber stopped in Ensenada and reported the robbery. Apparently, they weren’t the first to be robbed at Cuartro Casas. Click the link for the rest of the story on the downside of Baja surf trips.

More Flights at McClellan-Palomar Airport?

by The Editors on September 11, 2007

14087244 240X180According to NBCSandiego.com Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport, which is already “one of the busiest small airports, could soon have more traffic.” Consultants have apparently suggested that due to North County’s growth it might not be a bad idea to begin looking into direct service to Denver, Houston, and other cities.

Carlsbad resident Dwight Webster said he’s read the reports. He said the plan calls for “potentially increasing the flights from 16 daily right now, to somewhere between say, 30 and 40, based on projections in that review.” . . . He and other residents said that means more noise over their homes and more risks of accidents or emergency landings.

Sure, there a many homes being built in a around the airport (Bressi Ranch) but what about the safety of Carlsbad’s golfers?
