Dump Trucks Spills Asphalt, Stalls Traffic

by The Editors on September 5, 2008

Asphalt

Cleanup crews were still working on the shoulder of the north-bound lanes of Interstate 5 just north of La Costa Avenue this evening after a dump truck loaded with asphalt careened off the road this morning at 1 AM dropping 19 tons of asphalt onto the south bank of the Batiquitos Lagoon, according to a post on Sign On San Diego.

The spill had traffic backed up this morning all the way down to 5/805 split.

Robin Lewis, a California Department of Fish and Game scientist who specializes in spills, said crews dug as much of the hardened asphalt as they could from lagoon shore until the tide came up about 1 p.m. . . . “Right now it’s all under water,” Lewis said in mid-afternoon. He said the cleanup will resume about 7 p.m. and continue until the tide comes up again about midnight, but he hopes to finish the job this weekend.

McFarland Kids Now With Family

by The Editors on July 6, 2008

Family members, including the McFarland children’s “paternal grandmother from Sacramento, their maternal grandparents and several of their mother’s sisters” traveled to Salt Lake City to get the children of Stephanie and Tod McFarland, the Carlsbad couple who died in an automobile accident early Thursday July 3, 2008.

They’ve asked for Mommy and Daddy,” said Shirley Rehder, the children’s great-aunt. “The little one wanted his daddy to tuck him in last night.

Tod McFarland was the lead physical therapist at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla and Stephanie was a stay-at-home mom.

“They were the most beautiful people,” Rehder said. “I told Tod and Stephanie that if ever there was a family that needed to be modeled, it was theirs.”

Family members have not yet decided who the recently orphaned children will live with, but they have decided that they will keep them together. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this time of tragedy.

Pilot Overshot The Carlsbad Runway

by The Editors on May 9, 2008

According to a story in Aviation Week , the Cessna CE-510 that “ground looped” McClelland-Palomar Airport on April 19, 2008 was as a result of landing too fast, too far down the runway. Apparently the pilot. . .

. . . crossed the runway threshold 15 knots fast and landed close to the middle of Runway 24, according to a preliminary NTSB interview with the pilot.

Once the pilot realized he couldn’t stop the aircraft on the remaining runway, he intentionally ground looped the aircraft to stop it before it ran off the west end and down a steep ravine. . . . During the flight, the right PFD began to flicker and the autopilot disengaged.

The pilot reported that he was “fatigued by the workload associated with coping with the system” and he banged up California Natural Products plane.
