OAK + elixir Enters A New Relm

by The Editors on May 9, 2017

If you’ve been by State St. in the heart of Carlsbad Village recently you may have noticed that Relm, the wine bar, has closed. Apparently, it was closed in order to reopen as OAK+elixir. Here’s what the owners are saying:

While we really enjoyed Relm during it’s time, we’re looking forward to a new season. But don’t worry, the wine bar is remaining! During the closure we’ve rejuvenated the space and reimagined the wine and food menus, and we can’t wait for you to experience the new O+E.

OAK + elixir will celebrate its grand opening on Friday June 2, 2017 at 6:30 PM. If you like wine, beer, and food (and from the looks of this town everyone does) then drop by and say hello. For the official word from OAK + elixir, please follow the jump.

Ride Cyclery Shutters Carlsbad Store

by The Editors on May 5, 2017

Ride Cyclery gave Carlsbad a good go, however, it seems they’ve decided that their location next to Bobby’s Hideaway Cafe on El Camino Real just North of Cannon wasn’t cutting it and announced that as of Friday, May 5, 2017 they are shutting the location down. Here’s how they pitched it:

Every good story has a beginning and an end. We had a good RIDE with RIDE Cyclery – Carlsbad, however today marks the end of the story for this particular shop. . . We would like to thank you for your support over the past few years! We made a ton of new friends, had fun playing in the dirt and are grateful for the things we learned through this venture.

Ride will still be servicing customers through their Encinitas and San Diego stores as well as their RIDE 2U Mobile Showroom and Service Van. It was nice having a great shop nearby and we will miss them, but we totally understand — that location was pretty much an invisible hole.

Say Aloha To Pineapples At Islands

by The Editors on March 22, 2017

It’s Pineapple season at our favorite locally owned burger chain Islands Restaurant (they’re based Carlsbad, right?) And to kick off the season they’re loading up on some special pineapple menu items.

Starting April 1 and running through May 31, pineapple lovers will find a limited time Pineapple Pairing Menu with suggested pairings of popular pineapple dishes from the main menu. Favorites include the Hawaiian Burger, topped with fresh grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce, paired with the Big Island Iced Tea; the Yaki Tacos, topped with a house-made grilled pineapple salsa, paired with a refreshing Piña Colada; and the Hoisin Beach Bowl, made with chunks of fresh grilled pineapple and grilled vegetables, served over brown rice with mahi mahi or chicken and paired with a signature Mai Tai. Each pairing is meant to complement and bring out the sweet and savory flavors of the fruit.

If you’re into pineapples, of watching surf videos while you eat, stop buy islands and go Hawaiian. For the official word from the restaurant that goes through over 180,000 pineapples a year, click the link.

Cohn Brings Draft Republic To Carlsbad

by The Editors on February 27, 2017

We’ve never been fans of chain restaurants. In fact, we avoid them whenever possible. But when the chain is San Diego based, family owned, and produces amazingly consistent restaurants like Vintana, Island Prime, and The Prado, then, well, we find ourselves making an exception. That’s why we’re pretty excited about the Cohn Restaurant Group bringing Draft Republic to Carlsbad (in the old Claim Jumper spot on Avenida Encinas).

According to a story in the Seaside Courier it’s going to go a little like this:

Draft Republic Carlsbad will showcase an open warehouse environment with communal seating, as well as nostalgic table games such as ping-pong, foosball, billiards and retro arcade games. Exclusive to the new Carlsbad site, two massive video walls and over 40 televisions will cater to the sports TV crowd. . . . As the name suggests, the highlight of Draft Republic’s beverage program is an impressive lineup of more than 101 craft beers on tap. With a heavy emphasis on local San Diego breweries, the bar program will also feature a diverse wine list and a variety of craft cocktails including beer cocktails and sangria.

People certainly seem to love beer (and their TVs), so we’re guessing Draft Republic will be an instant hit in Carlsbad.

Carlsbad’s 2016 State Of The City

by The Editors on September 12, 2016

We were a little late getting to this one, but here’s how the City would like you to think about the City of Carlsbad in 2016. Just for fun count the number of times the word “growth” is used. Developers just love that “growth” word, don’t they? And, there’s no one more friendly to development than the Carlsbad City Council. Click play and let Mayor Hall explain it all.

Legoland Plans “Massive” Park In New York

by The Editors on June 2, 2016

legoland_boss

Back in the mid 1990s when proponents of the Legoland theme park in Carlsbad, California were pressing for votes to get the park approved by City voters they often pointed out that the “little park aimed at kids” would draw tourists from all over the world, because there were only two other Legolands and they were both in Europe.

How things have changed in 20 years. Since opening in 1999 the “little park” in Carlsbad Legoland USA has doubled the number of attractions, added an aquarium, built a hotel, applied to build a second hotel on the property and, oh yeah, built another theme park in Florida on the former grounds of Cypress Gardens. In fact, Legoland (now operated by British theme park mega corp Merlin Entertainments) now has six Legoland parks around the world with their seventh opening in Dubai in October 2016).

Apparently, that’s not enough. The company is now rallying the citizens of Orange County New York to approve the “worlds largest Legoland” in Goshen, New York, according to story in the Times-Union.

Merlin plans to present its plans at a special meeting of the Goshen Town Board at 7:30 p.m. June 14. . . The meeting will be held at the town’s Emergency Services Center, and outline project details for the park. . . The park would be the third in North America. Legoland theme parks already operate near Los Angeles and in Winter Haven, Fla. . . The $800 million project would create 1,500 jobs, according to the Mid-Hudson News Network. The site, off Route 17, is about two hours south of the Capital Region.

The story claims this new park is going to be “massive.” Go get ’em, Merlin. The world needs more theme parks. For the rest of the story, please click the link.

Velo Hangar SC Coming To Carlsbad

by The Editors on May 17, 2016

Media40

Carlsbad is on track to get a new top-end bike service shop in the heart of the Village when Velo Hangar’s Gordon Yeager turns his dream into a reality.

What I’m planning to create is a social spot — a spot where I can sell my VH branded merchandise, but most importantly create a place for all of us to gather, hang out, socialize,” Yeager says. ” That’s why I’m planning to build Velo Hangar SC. It’s part social, part service, it’s all you. Think patio, coffee, chill. Luckily I’ll be sharing space with a top notch locally owned coffee roaster on the premise. My space will be my own though. Solar powered, Eco-friendly, simple. I need help with the construction. The FF&E’s, the cargo container itself..  I will be starting construction in August of 2016. The spot has been secured.

Yeager is inviting everyone to buy in on the rebirth of Velo Hanger with a GoFundMe Campaign. Southern California cyclists have missed Yeager since he and his former business partner closed their  popular Solana Beach location. And we’ve missed having a pro cycling mechanic in The Village since Carbon Connection closed last year. Now, with a little help from all of us, Velo Hangar can live again and right in the heart of Carlsbad. To help out, click the link.
