Tomorrow morning (March 27, 2014) Scott Donnell, the senior planner with the City of Carlsbad, will present an update and preview of what’s being planned for Barrio Carlsbad and The Village in Carlsbad’s “master plan.” The meeting will be held at the Village Workshop at 8:30 AM and will conclude by 9:30. Organizers pointed out that:
“This meeting is not part of the potential master planning process. Pending contract approval by the City Council on 3/25, the planning firm will develop a very extensive public outreach and “charrette” process, with many different meeting times and dates so everyone who’s interested can participate. If you can’t make today’s meeting, don’t worry – the process is yet to begin!”
In other words this is not the meeting to get up and complain about how the City of Carlsbad always waits until friends of the City buy up all the land before quietly deciding that changing zoning to allow higher density development is probably “great for the City of Carlsbad.” So please, leave your pitchforks and torches at home.

Carlsbad’s own Hot Dog On A Stick has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection in US Bankruptcy court according to a release from the company. The restaurant chain has 93 locations and according to CEO Dan Smith, many of the leases on those locations were signed at the wrong time.
“Like many mall-based businesses, HDOS signed some very expensive leases during the booming economy of the mid-2000s,” said Dan Smith, CEO. “In addition, declining mall foot traffic over the past several years has had a negative impact on sales at most company locations. We’ve been pursuing new leases in all locations and the Chapter 11 filing will allow us to do so in a more effective manner. The mall business is built around the relationships and partnerships between tenant and landlord. We want to be in malls where the relationship is positive and the partnership is mutually beneficial.”

Carlsbad is getting a new vegetarian, fast-casual, chain restaurant when Veggie Grill celebrates their grand opening on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 965 Palomar Airport Road (in the Northeast corner of the Costco parking lot). The new location (in the mini-mall where Pat & Oscars used to be) will be the company’s 23rd restaurant and they’re giving out a few gift cards to celebrate the opening.
. . . the restaurant will thank every guest in line between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Jan. 22 with a $20 Veggie Grill gift card. Additionally, one lucky guest chosen at random will win “Veggie Grill for a Year.” . . . “Consumers are more aware of the nutritional benefits of clean eating than ever before and they’re looking for dining options offering delicious food they can feel good about,” said Greg Dollarhyde, Chief Energizing Officer for Veggie Grill. “The support from the San Diego community has been instrumental in our mission of giving guests a new way to eat well and engage in an active lifestyle.”

Not sure how much longer we’ll have a Carlsbad Patch to kick around, but as long as we do it won’t be owned by AOL.
According to a story on CNBC today, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong (above right) has decided to sell a majority share of Patch to Hale Global, an investment fund.
Patch, AOL’s big bet on local news, has been a big problem for the company. In 2012 Patch had a loss of $35 million, and last year after hundreds of layoffs and shuttering many of its sites, it still didn’t turn a profit, despite a promise that it would by year-end. . . The terms of the deal were not announced, but AOL is effectively contributing Patch, while Hale contributes cash.
AOL will still be a minority owner, but they won’t have to take all the loses. Nice how there continues to be a market for businesses that lose money isn’t it? Guess everyone needs a write off here and there.

When Simone DeLira of EverBank was given the task of organizing the company’s grand opening in Carlsbad, priority one was making it be community oriented. One of the City’s oldest nonprofits, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, was selected as the charity of choice. Each guest was asked to bring a toy or make a donation to the Club. Needless to say, it was a huge success!
“We have recently opened a new Home Loan Division here in Carlsbad,” stated EverBank Manager Grant Tisdel. “We are very excited to be a part of the community, and our Open House/Toy Drive was a way to give back in a meaningful way.” . . “Every member at our Village Clubhouse will be given a holiday gift, thanks to the generosity of EverBank as well as other local individuals and companies,” said Club CEO Brad Holland. “We are so grateful for the support Grant , Simone, and EverBank’s entire team has given our kids.”

Tip Top Meats founder and Carlsbad legend “Big John” Haedrich (pictured right with his wife Diane) was recognized for his over two decades of services on the Tri-City Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees when he received the Legacy Award at the foundation’s Diamond Ball on November 2, 2013.
“Big John is one of our community’s larger than life personalities and a model citizen. His entrepreneurial successes and his tremendous generosity are a true inspiration to all who know him,” said Kevin Stotmeister, chair of the foundation’s Board of Trustees. “The Tri-City Hospital Foundation is delighted to honor him with the 2013 Legacy Award.” . . . Good health and athletics were essential to Big John’s own youth and development in post-war Eastern Germany. They gave him the confidence and discipline he needed to find success as he pursued his early career as a butcher and ultimately moved to California, started a business and achieved the American Dream.

Carlsbadistan’s newest Village bike shop, Pedego Carlsbad, wants you to ride a new bike, but they’re not going to make you pedal if you don’t want to. Not with the Pedego e-bike.
The beach cruisers Pedego sells feature an electric “brushless geared hub motor” built into the rear wheel that allows riders to pedal if they want or go up to 20 MPH for 30 miles without doing much more than twisting the throttle. With a little help on the pedals the lightweight lithium batteries will last even longer. And, the best part, unlike a Tesla, when the battery dies you can always simply pedal the bike home.
Pedego Carlsbad launched in May 2013 by the husband and wife team of John and Denise Buckingham.
[They] decided to open the electric bike store after John became the proud owner of a Pedego electric bike. “I live four miles from the beach and loved riding my bike there, but the hills made it a challenge to do regularly, so I looked into electric bikes. I was so impressed by the quality and comfort of the Pedego bikes that I wanted to share the experience with as many as possible,” John explains.
After taking one of the Buckingham’s bikes out for a spin we’d have to agree. The electric motor is quiet and when you twist the throttle the bike suddenly surges forward like someone else is doing the pedaling. It seemed almost magical. But don’t take our word for it. Try one out. Pedego rents bikes $14 a hour or $25 for a tandem. The worst part about renting a Pedego, however, is having to return it. Carlsbadistan-based life sciences company Life Technologies Corp. announced (April 15, 2013) that it will be acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific for close to $13.6 billion in cash, according to a story in the San Diego Business Journal.
“The Life Technologies employees are very excited about joining forces with Thermo Fisher. There are many advantages to the combination for them,” Life Technologies chairman and CEO Greg Lucier said in an analyst call on April 15. “We’re going to have a series of programs in place to retain employees between the signing and the close so that we can deliver a terrific well functioning organization to Marc (Marc Casper, president and CEO of Thermo Fisher) and his team.”
Nice work, Mr. Lucier. It was a great run.
