The Mission Federal Credit Union branch office on Jefferson Street was robbed Monday shortly after 9:30 AM when a six feet tall 250 pound white man who appeared to be in his late 40 or early 50s approached a teller and said, “This is a robbery.”
After the employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the thief left the bank and ran off to the north, according to investigators.
This is the third Carlsbad Village bank robbery in the last two months. Must be our lovely downtown’s easy freeway access.

Arizona State University’s three-dimentional data visualizing Decision Theater could provide a look into the future development of Carlsbadistan. According to the East Valley Tribune, when Carlsbad City Manager Ray Patchett saw ASU’s Decision Theater’s electronic model of downtown Tempe, Arizona he wanted to bring it home with him.
After flying through proposed developments at ASU, the traditional planning process seemed archaic. “It really gives you a way to get beyond just the one-dimensional piece of paper,” he said.
As the City of Carlsbad revises its development standards, Patchett thinks the Decision Theater technology will help visualize how different building heights and road widths might impact our city. Legoland has a 3-D theater and has reportedly given Patchett the go ahead to use it.

As everyone under 16 will tell you, July 21 is the day that the seventh and “final” installment in JK Rowlings Harry Potter series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows drops on the world. San Diego Union Tribune columnist Logan Jenkins turned out a “Bricks and Bouquets” column today and guess who got a brick? The Carlsbad City Council. Logan awarded them his “Rich Robotic Golf award:”
. . . why give a pass to the council for blowing an extra $277,200 ($4,620 a month for five years) on gizmos that tell golfers the distance to the pin – and, theoretically at least, to speed up play? Good lord, this is a municipal golf course, not a private country club. It’s bad enough that players are forced to rent carts – you read correctly, no walking is allowed – but now another layer of pricey technology will separate golfers from the way the game is traditionally played.
Pretty easy target, but we can’t say we don’t disagree.

i-Safe, a Carlsbad-based non-profit organization dedicated to educating to “responsibly take control of their Internet experiences” has enlisted the blackmailed, scandal ridden, and newly crowned Miss New Jersey Amy Polumbo to “help raise awareness about victimization of children on the Internet.”
A group called “The Committee to Save the Miss America Peagent” threatened to go public with the photos if Polumbo did not resign her title. Instead, she went public herself and retained the title.
Amy is a very courageous young woman,” says i-SAFE CEO and Program Director Teri Schroeder. “Online victimization like bullying, predation, even child pornography is far too common on the Internet. Amy’s celebrity will have an impact on students and parents as she raises awareness about these disturbing online issues.”
It’s nice that i-Safe can look past the photos and see the true headline-grabbing promotion they can get from being involved with this salacious scandal.

In these days of Oceania vs. Eurasia style threats from almost fictional sounding terrorist organization it’s nice that local Carlsbad companies are doing their part to make the world a safer place. Invitrogen, the Carlsbad based provider of “essential life science technologies for disease research and drug discovery” has announced:
. . . that their subsidiary Invitorgen Federal Systems has recently signed a $3.9 million contract with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency for the development of a prototype hand-held device for the detection of multiple biothreat agents in a single sample.
Sounds a lot like a Tricorder to us.

Each year, for the past 17 years, San Diego County’s best graduating high school senior football players have come together for a classic battle of the North vs. the South. And last night, July 13, 2007, at Mesa College the South rose again against the North by winning 14-0 in the 17th Annual Alex Spanos All-Star Football Classic.
As is common in many All-Star games, the defenses dominated. In a scoreless first half, the North’s Ivory Herd of RBV was the leading rusher with 9 yards on 2 carries. La Costa Canyon’s Nick Witzman was a defensive stalwart for the North, racking up two of six first-half sacks.

Yesterday morning (July 12, 2007) at approximately 11 AM a man in his mid-thirties, described as stocky, white, with dark hair and a mustache walked up to a teller at the Bank of America on Carlsbad Village Drive and demanded cash. So far authorities have not reported how much money was taken. The man’s resemblance to cartoon character Elmer Fudd is apparently coincidental.
He had a stocky build, and was between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall. He was wearing a green camouflage-style baseball cap with a yellow emblem; a blue, short-sleeved, button-down, collared shirt over a white, long-sleeved T-shirt; and glasses.
Oddly, this is the second Carlsbad bank robbery since we started keeping track. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255 or the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.

New York City’s The Village Voice says that Plena Libre is “the biggest band to play plena, which is a folkloric music out of Puerto Rico, Plena Libre know the tradition but aren’t afraid to draw upon stuff from outside the genre to keep it fresh.”
We’ll all get to see for ourselves when the 13-member, four-time Grammy nominee band plays the final Stagecoach Park stop of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Parks from 6-8 PM on Friday July 13. The band’s eclectic mix of of latin beats will certainly get the park dancing.
Combining a swinging rhythm section, horns and vocals, Plena Libre’s music has been given new light and patterns with contemporary dance floor styles such as songo, samba, reggae, salsa and pambiche.

In May Legoland Carlsbad set a world record for the tallest Lego tower ever built. It was the 94.3 ft-high mast of a pirate ship.
Now, visitors to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto Canada (August 17 to September 3) are attempting to break Carlsbad’s record by building at tower that is taller. Construction begins Friday August 17 at 10 AM.
This means there is still over a month for sabotage. Legoland? Are we going to just let this happen? We’ll come over and throw a couple more bricks on the top if that’s what it takes, because world records are important in Carlsbadistan.
