Bye Bye Beach: Carlsbad Shuts Down

by The Editors on July 5, 2007

Beach Closures

On Sunday July 8, 2007 you can say goodbye to your peaceful mid-morning Tamarack surf as the City of Carlsbad shuts down the entire beach from the Cold Waters to Pine Street and turns it over to 1,000 lycra-clad, masochistic body-shavers and their significant others for the annual Carlsbad Triathlon. If, however, you enjoy watching people of all shapes and sizes jiggling around town in their underwear then this might possibly rank up there as the best day of your year.

The Elite Division dives into the surf at 8:00 AM with the rest to follow. For a schedule of the entire Carlsbad Triathlon and Health & Welness Weekend click the link below.

Sundown on July 4th 2007

by The Editors on July 5, 2007

Roger Clark

It was a classic Carlsbad 4th of July in The Neighborhood: overcast, then sunny. Cold, then hot. Parades, packed beaches, and streets with no parking. Around dusk four police cars rolled up to Dini’s sorting out a “misunderstanding between patrons,” while on the PCH a private label “custody transport” wagon cruised North then South praying for passengers.

Shortly after 8:30 PM the fire works at Legoland lit up the Southern sky while at Off-Shore Roger and Clarke entertained the sunset viewers with juggling fire and comedy. Hopefully, the evening won’t get too wild (a firecracker just set off a car alarm on Garfield), because remember: even though it feels like it, tomorrow is definitely not Sunday.

Legendary La Costa Needs A Major

by The Editors on July 4, 2007

05MediumrygolfThe La Costa Resort and Spa is losing the Acura Tennis Classic after 16 years, add to that the fact that this was the first year since 1968 that the resort didn’t play host to a PGA event and you have a dismal year ahead for professional golf and tennis in Carlsbad. The OC Register’s Randy Youngman has taken this as a chance to look back on all the great moments at La Costa and drop a little knowledge on La Costa’s new Legends Trail.

The most memorable tournament I covered at La Costa was the rain-shortened Mercedes in 1997, when the reigning Rookie of the Year on the PGA Tour beat the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year in a one-hole playoff, in dramatic fashion. . . . The rookie’s name was Tiger Woods. The Player of the Year was Tom Lehman.

It’s good to know that La Costa holds so many good memories for so many people, because that mean the chances of more memories being created in the future are good. Youngman says there are rumors that the LPGA may be coming to La Costa in the future and La Costa’s new director of golf Dave Doerr said, “We would welcome them with open arms.”

5th Annual Terramar 4th Of July Parade

by The Editors on July 4, 2007

Tmar Group

When our friends Cec and Katie sent us an invitation to their neighborhood “4th of July Parade,” we honestly imagined a couple strollers with flags taped on and Cec in a Uncle Sam costume. We thought we’d stroll the neighborhood waving to strangers and write it off as performance art.

Img 0207When we arrived at Terramar at about 11:20, however, what we found was a completely decorated neighborhood and a parade lead by a red Lincoln Continental convertible with floats, people in costumes, and Captain Mike Davis of the Carlsbad Fire Department behind the wheel of Carlsbad’s old-time fire truck. And yes, there was even an Uncle Sam in the march. We were overwhelmed by the sense of community, neighborhood pride, and America love. It made us damn proud to be Carlsbadistanians.

Happy 4th of July Carlsbad

by The Editors on July 4, 2007

American Flag

Today is the day we celebrate America, the greatest Country in the world. Carlsbadistanians do this by exercising their God given right to go to the beach, under overcast skies, with most of inland California, paddle out into the most crowded line up of the year, and let the flailing visitors know that this is our beach, our waves, and that they are guests here. It is our day to swerve our beach cruisers through The Neighborhood with sloshing red cups filled with God knows what, stopping at all the parties along Garfield, and getting them refilled.

Happy 4th, take a moment to remember what the day really means, and then get back to the BBQ. We’ll be covering this event all day. Check back for updates.

UNIV Miami Gets Up

by The Editors on July 4, 2007

Univ Miami-1Longtime Carlsbad resident Tim Swart and his partners Mirko Mangum and Carlsbad High School graduate Sal Masekela, recently opened a Miami branch of their Encinitas-based style shop UNIV with Mark Gamez. And the shop is so cool that was profiled in the Miami Herald today.

The store’s decor is kitschy. Gamez, said they worked hard to make it that way — and that customers love it. ”Besides the alligator heads and the poster of Anita Bryant, it reminds a lot of people of their abuelos or grandparent’s basement in the 1970s.”

Now we just need to figure out how to get the crew to open another store in Carlsbad, however, we’d guess Tokyo will be next on the list.

by The Editors on July 3, 2007

3-1.4 NewThe latest issue of Carlsbad Magazine has hit the racks around town and it is stuffed full of sizzling Carlsbad goodness, including, but not limited to a profile on Carlsbad’s biggest surf celebrity Taylor Knox (click to read), a preview of the last Acura Classic at La Costa, a behind the green preview of The Crossings golf course, a story on Carlsbad’s best ice cream, a peek into Richard and Elaine Wagner’s tropical backyard, and a profile of Jeff Warner and Bob Hecklinger’s new State Street surfshop Legends. Some of this is up on ClickOnCarlsbad.com, however, until the rest goes up you’re going to have to read it the old fashion way: on paper with the old folks.

It’s A Heatwave

by The Editors on July 3, 2007

Heatwave-WWe saw the Enron doccumentary The Smartest Guys In the Room, so we know what it means when the utility companies start warning about a “stressed California electric grid.” But today there were other reasons to worry. The small plane that crashed while taking off at McClellan-Palomar Airport ripped out high voltage lines that reportedly left thousands of homes without electricity. And oddly at nearly the same time, yet unrelated to the crash, The Encina Powerplant (icon of our blog and City) went off line and dropped even more power from “the grid.”

Now meteorologists say we’re in for even more hot weather through Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Thursday for the county. The hot dry weather means an increase in fire danger and the potential for power woes. . . San Diego Gas and Electric officials are urging people to remember this slogan: Turn it off, put it off and turn it up.

We, of course, will be forced to open our windows and let the cool ocean breezes in while Carlsbad’s eastern front swelters. Ah, beach living. . .

Maku Makes Associated Press

by The Editors on July 3, 2007

 Wp-Content Uploads 2007 05 Maku-Im1

Maku Furnishings, our favorite Carlsbad-based furniture company just got props in an Associated Press lifestyle piece written by Joan Brunskill.

Consistent with its California roots, Maku Furnishings combines a high-spirited surfing connection with environmental awareness — and makes wood furniture mostly intended for outdoor use. . . Maku’s furniture is designed in Encinitas, Calif., and made in Java from sustainable Indonesian teak, reclaimed or plantation-grown.

The first to pick up the story is The Prince George Citizen in BC, Canada. Word must travel slowly up there in the cold. And it’s nothing compared to Maku’s recent cover spot on Decor & Style Magazine. But every little bit counts. Right, Johnny?
