Casa Del Mar Apartments Sold

by The Editors on September 19, 2007

The 34-unit Casa Del Mar Apartment complex at 3515 Roosevelt St was just purchased by the Glenn L. Goldman Family Trust for $6.8 million. The 22-year old complex consists of 28,900 square feet in five two-story buildings. This is the same group who owns the “18-unit Ocean Breeze Apartments on the same Carlsbad corner at 475-497 Chestnut Ave” and bought the 25-unit Pelican Cove apartment complex on Eaton street in Oceanside two years ago.

Apparently real estate is a good investment. . .

City Council Approves Entertainment Regs

by The Editors on September 19, 2007

We knew that the vote on AB# 19,171 was mostly formality, but last night at City Council it official passed with a unanimous vote according to a story on NBCSanDiego.com.

The ordinances go into effect Oct. 25. Anyone who is found to be in violation of the rules faces fines. The exact amounts have not yet been made public.

While trying to logically regulate drunk people is always a losing battle, it’s nice that City Council cares enough to try something.

KNSD’s Rory Devine On the Carlsbad Beat

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

Rory 2

Our favorite San Diego TV news reporter Rory Devine (along with Alejandro Alejandre behind the camera) are posted up with the KNSD Channel 7/39 live truck on Roosevelt St across from Hennessy’s this afternoon for live coverage of the new entertainment regulations that will most likely be passed tonight by the Carlsbad City Council. Rory, however, was running into the same problems the newspaper reporters have had lately.

“The owners aren’t in, the managers say they’re not authorized to talk, and the customers aren’t even here yet,” she said to her news director.

It must have been a slow news day. And we guess that’s good. For more check out the 6 PM news tonight on KNSD 7/39.

Carlsbad Party Regulations Up Again

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

When the Carlsbad City Council meets tonight one of the topics they will be discussing is a new set of “entertainment regulations” that hopes to make the Village a little quieter. According to the North County Times the new regulations look a little like this:

  • obtain an entertainment license if they serve alcohol and offer entertainment such as live music;
  • pay a $200 license fee that would be good for three years;
  • have employees trained through a state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board certified program;
  • have at least one security guard on the premises;
  • close between 2 and 6 a.m.;
  • between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., meet a new city noise standard of 65 decibels, up from the initial 60-decibel proposal.

None of it sounds unreasonable, especially when you consider the problems the Village has been having lately.

Carlsbad Citibank Robbed With Note

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

Yesterday (September 17) at 12:50 PM the Citibank at 1810 Marron Road was robbed by a young man with a note “demanding money,” according to a story in the North County Times. Apparently, it’s that easy.

The suspect, who is believed to be in his twenties, was seen leaving the area in a white Toyota truck, police said. He was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap. A second suspect was seen in the Toyota but police didn’t have many details about his appearance, officers said.

That “hat and glasses” disguise seems extremely popular. This is the fourth Carlsbad bank robbery we’ve linked to since May.

La Costa IT Geek Invasion 2007

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

Tlf07 Web Header

Carlsbad is getting another influx of visiting tech knobs next week when Forrester Research brings it’s Technology Leadership Forum 2007 to the La Costa Resort and Spa September 25-26.

Each year, Technology Leadership Forum examines a critical issue at the intersection of business and information technology. This year’s theme, Design For People, Build For Change, takes aim at improving the success of all technology professionals, but its content will focus most closely on these roles: Chief information officer, Application development & program management professional, etc. . .

It’s like the whole resort overrun by our favorite people in the world: “IT professionals.” Watch out Carlsbad these nerds know how to party. . . (We just laughed while typing that. Sorry.)

Carlsbad Music Festival

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

CbadmfSince May 26 when we first mentioned the 4th Annual Carlsbad Music Festival being held September 24-30, it appears that at least one thing has changed: oddly, a “Los Angeles” concert has been added to the schedule (we’re not walking to that one). In Carlsbad, however, we’re still looking forward to thrilling performances. Not that we’ve heard of any of these groups before:

Get all the info on their website Carlsbadmusicfestival.org.

Lancer Dancer Golf Benefit

by The Editors on September 17, 2007

07 Team Photo Uniform Op 800X5332One of the things we’re going to miss most about the Acura Tennis Classic is the post-final Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers and their center court rump shaking. The La Costa event may be gone, but the Lancer Dancers are alive and well. And they need your help.

On October 15, they will be holding their Seventh Annual Golf Tournament at The Crossings at Carlsbad.

The event will benefit the Lancer Dancers and junior varsity Xcalibur dance teams throughout the year. The $175 tournament fee includes a round of golf, dinner in The Crossings’ clubhouse and performances by the dance teams.

Carlsbad Hosts The Book Crawl Kick Off

by The Editors on September 16, 2007

10 56 089 15 07As much as we love books, we hate smelling old, bathed-in-other-people’s dead-skin dust used books. That’s why the First Annual Used Bookstore Crawl on Wednesday September 19 is so horrifying.

Founded by Patricia McFarland, the owner of Encinitas’ Book Tales, this event will see 26 people load up on a chartered bus for an all-day tour of eight of San Diego’s dusty, cracked-spine, used book stores, according to a story in the North County Times.

[McFarland] looked at the bookstore scene and found many store owners like her were disappearing. “It’s kind of scary on our part,” she said. “I’m one of the last, if not the last, used bookstore in Encinitas right now. There are not much of us left out there. And it’s not because there’s no reading public.” . . . Figuring much of the malaise was because of a lack of public awareness of used bookstores’ enduring existence, she was inspired to create the crawl.

The tour begins at 9 AM in the parking lot of The Ocean House in Carlsbad with Fahrenheit 451 as the first stop, then moves on to The Paperback Book Exchange, Ducky Waddles, Book Tales, Earth Song in Del Mar, Pennywise in Pacific Beach, and then downtown to San Diego’s Wahrenbrock’s Book House before finishing at Mysterious Galaxy in Clairemont. All this for $36.50 including lunch. For more on the Used Bookstore Crawl, contact (760) 436-7892.

What’s Worse Than A Drum Circle?

by The Editors on September 16, 2007

WbrmainNothing. Okay, bad joke. We apologize. The Museum of Making Music is one of Carlsbad’s most interactive, educational, entertainment experiences yet we are continually forgetting that it exists. As a reminder here’s what’s coming up on Saturday September 22:

The World Beat Rhythms (WBR) interactive concert performance features Ed Roscetti & Maria Martinez, both critically acclaimed drummers, composers, authors, and educators. They combine a wide range of percussion instruments and drumset to perform an eclectic mix of hybrid compositions in a World Music setting. . . . WBR offers a six-piece ensemble made up of four multi-percussionists, a guitarist and a bassist. Chanting vocals are incorporated, adding layers of dynamic improvisation. Audience participation (voluntary) on shakers and hand drums provided by WBR always proves to be a favorite part of the show.

Reservations are required and tickets are $12 ($10 for museum members). Contact Jillian Jepsen at (760) 438-5996, ext. 212 for tickets.
