On the weekend of September 22-23, 2007 Carlsbad’s Armada Drive will be closed to traffic and then covered in chalk drawings, lined with booths, and filled with art afficionados as Art Spash returns for it’s 5th year.
ArtSplash … is a FREE, two-day, non-profit, family event that promotes and benefits arts within the community. ArtSplash is a community-wide partnership of organizations and businesses working together to establish an Annual Family Event showcasing North County.
Art Splash features chalk drawings, live art performances, musicians, street entertainers and great food in the form the concurrently running 11th Annual Taste of Carlsbad. And trust us, Art Splash is a lot cooler than its event logo logo would suggest. Don’t miss it.

We’d like to send out a special Carlsbadistan thank you to the 210 volunteers who gathered at Frazee Beach (at Pine Ave. and Carlsbad Blvd.) this morning at 9 AM as part of 23rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. Under the guidance of Dave Boerlin they picked our beach clean and left it a much better place for everyone.
“We had 210 people signed up,” Boerlin said today while packing up. “We removed between 300 and 400 pounds of trash.”
We all appreciate the work everyone put in this morning. Thank you very much.

When the Carlsbad’s Planning Commission meets on Wednesday September 19 at 6 PM they will back on the Ponto express. After postponing a vote on September 5 they are now ready to weigh in on the Ponto Beach Front Vision Plan.
Known formally as the Ponto Beach Front Vision Plan, the document covers a 50-acre region that is mostly owned by three parties — Star Properties of Japan, Wavecrest Resorts of Carlsbad and Ponto Storage owner Dale Schreiber. The area is bordered by Carlsbad Boulevard to the west, the railroad tracks to the east, Batiquitos Lagoon to the south and the Hanover Beach Colony development to the north.
We’re going to go way out on a limb and guess that the plan will get a big thumbs up all around. Good-bye Carlsbad, hello Huntington Beach.

Soil samples from the proposed site of Carlsbad Unified School District’s new $95.4 million high school on the Eastern Front have been sent off to be analyzed as part of the environmental study of the project, according to a story in the North County Times.
The study is designed to show how the proposed school would affect the land and its surrounding neighbors, said Walter Freeman, assistant superintendent of business services with the Carlsbad Unified School District. The study must also propose ways to minimize any effects, he said.
Even a group started to preserve the area doesn’t seem to have a problem with the land being used for a new school. Which is a good thing
Diane Nygaard, the president of a conservation group called Preserve Calavera, said her group had hoped the district would leave the land untouched, but that they aren’t fighting plans for the campus. “We would love to see it become part of the preservation area but clearly the school district needs it for (the) school,” said Nygaard, referring to a swath of open space along Calavera Creek from south Oceanside, through Carlsbad to Vista.

This Sunday, September 16, is Party In-Your-Park day in Carlsbadistan. All you have to do is show up at one of the following parks with whatever you want to bring: Pine Park, Stagecoach Park, Hidden Canyon Park, or Poinsettia Park.
Free admission for all. Just bring your own picnic, family & friends and plan on meeting all of your neighbors. There will also be old-fashioned, picnic-style games for all ages.
As much as we prefer hanging out in the park when they are empty, if you’re a social family you’ll probably have a great time.

Carlsbad’s Carolyn Granado will be appearing tonight on the “hit” NBC game show 1 vs. 100 hosted by “popular comedian Bob Saget.”
In tonight’s episode of 1 Vs 100, Carolyn Granado of Carlsbad, California and Andrew Murray of Stony Point, New Jersey will play for a top prize of $1 million by trying to outsmart the mob, which includes Rabbi Shmuley of “Shalom in the Home,” cowboys, used car salesmen and Harvard professors.
The show airs on NBC tonight at 8 PM. Watch it and cheer Carolyn on. Apparently, you can play this game online and potentially win $10,000.

We knew it would happen, but it’s always fun to watch how these kinds of mall developments get approval from City Council. How’s this for a ringing endorsement:
“I actually think the developer has done a pretty good job on this project,” Councilwoman Julie Nygaard said. “It isn’t perfect … but it has to be (financially) viable. … What you want to do is to create a place where all the little shops can work with the big shops.”
Nice to know that Carlsbad’s City Council continues to get behind commercial developments that are “pretty good” but “aren’t perfect.” Isn’t it?

Tom Delonge, the former member of Blink 182 and musical mind behind Angels & Airwaves, has a new album coming out on October 23. According to Ultimateguitar.com the new grouping of songs titled I: Empire was recorded right here in Carlsbad at the MacBeth Footwear offices. Not that this is news to any fans of the band.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will be holding their 17th Annual Carlsbad Business Expo in the parking lot of the Westfield Mall at 2525 El Camino Real on September 19, 2007. The event begins at 12 PM and ends at 6. Apparently, this is a great place to “make connections” with other people who are trying to make a living here in Carlsbad. Unfortunately, the Expo is now closed for exhibitors. . . damn, we didn’t even get a $570 booth to hang out in. How is Carlsbadistan.com going to meet anyone now?

San Diego Coastkeeper and I Love A Clean San Diego are partnering with the California Coastal Commission to host the 23rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday September 15. The event is a major part of International Coastal Cleanup which includes all 50 states and almost 100 countries. According to organizers it is one of the world’s largest volunteer events.
If you’d like to help clean up the beach in Carlsbadistan (we’d love it if you would) please register for the Frazee Beach site (at Pine Ave. and Carlsbad Blvd.) The event starts at 9 AM and goes until noon. So far more than 143 volunteers have signed up for the Carlsbadistan location. For more info click the link.
