Artists don’t get out much. At least that’s what we like to tell ourselves as an excuse for not having seen Carlsbad artist Jen Trute’s paintings before now. Apparently, she’s been painting in Carlsbadistan for several years. San Diego Union-Tribune Art Critic Robert L Pincus profiled Ms. Trute today. Here’s a little of what he said:
She points to a breakthrough surreal painting, “Sarah and Her Demons,” a canvas done in the meticulous style she is still honing. A woman poses in a kitchen chair, looking unperturbed. Sarah doesn’t notice the demon by her side. A twin demon is standing on the kitchen table, devouring the cereal from the box. . . In an oblique way, you sense this painting is about Trute too, trying to stave off dramatic forces within.
While Trute’s style isn’t necessarily what we’re into, her work is definitely worth checking out.

The Union-Tribune explains exactly why our hometown is such a great place to visit and live, but they’re not talking about downtown Carlsbadistan, no they’re talking about everything east of I-5 (is that possible?).
It’s 66 degrees on a shimmering day in the middle of January. . . This could be any coastal city in San Diego County, which is what makes the region fertile ground for tourism. . . But this is Carlsbad, and what has made Carlsbad an exceptional tourist draw among its peers is not what’s going on west of the sandy beach, but east of it. . . Being in North County is a plus, too, said David Brundley, an international hospitality and marketing consultant based in Carlsbad. “Carlsbad has got a great location, and it benefits that it’s not downtown San Diego, but it’s not that far away,” Brundley said.
Of course, we all know this, but if you want to freshen up on how great Carlsbad is, read the rest of the story.

This morning at 8 AM more than 2,500 of Carlsbadistan’s youngest runners (aged 3 through 12) busted off the starting line in the Keebler Kids Marathon Mile at Legoland. The one-mile loop through the Legoland park as part of the weekend-long festivities of the Carlsbad Marathon. Everyone who participated got a gold medal.
Though we do not condone the seedy, underground, baby-racing scene, there was also a “diaper dash” for babies who still travel on all fours. For more on the weekend activities surrounding the Carlsbad Marathon click the link.

Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill owner Matt Hensley has had a storied career that spans the world of professional skateboarding, music, and now the hospitality industry.
Skateboarding Magazine music writer Arlie Carstens recently interview Matt for the February 2008 issue of the magazine and found out why Matt just couldn’t stay off the road.
Flogging Molly tours really hard. I mean hard-touring bands look at our schedule and go, “Goddamn, you guys are f—kin’ crazy.” Ten years of that just got to me; I was missing too many of my kid’s games, and I just got manically depressed over all of it. One day I just freaked the f—k out and said, “I’m gonna walk away, I just can’t do this anymore.” And then I had to do something with myself, so I started a pub—a musical place—so I could be around music still and kind of keep it together. But I dunno, after doing it for a while and taking some time away from it (the band) I kind of came to the realization that the grass is always greener no matter what you do. Not being in the band anymore just kind of screwed my whole gig up; it’s such a big part of my life and who I am, it’s just weird to not be part of that anymore. It just doesn’t feel right. So after talking with those guys and going back and forth, they were happy to have me back.
And if all this makes you thirsty for some Guinness and “sweet piano playing” blonde rocker then stop by Henley’s tonight, January 18, 2008 from 7-10 PM to check out Taryn Donath. This girl can tickle her some ivory. Seriously.

When the 2008 Carlsbad Marathon starts at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning 10,000 runners of comically diverse shapes and sizes will be pounding the streets of Carlsbadistan.
After the starter’s gun goes off, Marathoners will head for the coast passing the Buena Vista Lagoon through the village of Carlsbad to Carlsbad Boulevard (Highway 101). You’ll head south on the 101 to Palomar Airport Road (PAR). After a 3 mile trip inland on you’ll return to the coast and again head south on 101 to a quick U-turn near La Costa Avenue back up the cost to the finish line.
We’ll be out watching along the course. If you’re running let us know how it goes.

Stock of the Carlsbad-based golf manufacturer Callaway Golf “jumped 11.8” on Thursday January 17, 2008 when it was announced that announced a 10 percent gain in net sales to “$1.25 billion” for 2007, according to a story in BusinessWeek.
But that gain isn’t as impressive as it first appears when you consider that the stock’s value had dropped 20% over the past two weeks after a couple of golf retailers said that the momentum of sales in the category had slowed substantially, said James Hardiman, an analyst at FTN Midwest Research in Cleveland, Ohio.
Sadly, some of the gains the company has made have come from “shifting its manufacturing operations” away from Carlsbad to Massachusetts and other locations overseas.

We mourned the loss of frequent Carlsbadistan visitor Ike Turner when he was found dead in his bed on December 12, 2007. And we were even more bummed to find that the San Marcos Medical Examiner’s office reported on January 15, 2008 that Turner died of an apparent “accidental cocaine overdose.” Let’s just say this, anyone who is still doing blow at 76 is seriously living on the edge. And that’s apparently where Ike liked it. Rock on.
