A 20-year-old Carlsbad man who apparently could be “suicidal” was reported missing Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2010, according to a story on the San Diego News Network.
Thomas Mar Quine, 20, was reported missing around 3 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Paul Mendes said. Quine is described as Asian, 5-feet-10 and 135 pounds, wearing a gray sweatshirt, a black shirt with white print, black shorts and sandals. . . He was carrying a case containing a ukulele, Mendes said. Police searched until dark on Saturday and resumed around 6 a.m. today, and a helicopter joined the hunt after morning clouds burned off, according to the lieutenant.
If you heard the helicopter, that’s what it was.
[Update June 6, 2010 North County Times: Thomas was found safe sitting in a canyon about a mile east of the search area and was returned home by police.]

A 60-year-old Carlsbad man may have broken his neck today, Sarturday, June 5, 2010, after diving from his board in shallow water, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
[The man] may have fractured his neck when he hit his head on the ocean bottom, Oceanside Police Lt. Mike Goldsmith said. . . . Another surfer saw the surfer floating in the water and dragged the man to the surfline, where lifeguards began resuscitating the man with CPR. . . The man was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends.

On Monday night, June 7, 2010 Carlsbadistan 25-year-old twin brothers and business parters Cory and Kyle Miholich will go for a million dollars on TV’s popular game show Wheel of Fortune, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“We were very lucky on the ‘Wheel,’ ” said Kyle Miholich, whose “Family Week” episode airs Monday. “We had a chance to win a million dollars, which we blew. Actually, my brother blew it on the first puzzle. But we were able to walk away with a decent chunk of change.
And that money they say is going to help them with their Fiji Yogurt business. Wonder how much mileage Kyle will get out of that million dollar loss over the next couple years?

Carlsbadistan City Council candidate Jon Wantz will be kicking off his campaign June 16, 2010 from 7-9 PM at the Ocean House at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive.
“Over the past few months, I have been working diligently to spread the word about my campaign and let the residents of Carlsbad know what I intend to do for them and what I stands for,” Wantz said. “Many of you have already shown tremendous support and for that we are very thankful. With your help, we can help Carlsbad turn the corner to a bright and healthy future.”

At the close of the Carlsbad City Council’s May 18 meeting, Councilman Matt Hall observed, “History keeps repeating itself. When this issue first came before us in 2001, the mayor and I both voted against it.”
He was referring to an increase in retirement benefits approved nine years ago on a 3-2 vote. This time he joined the mayor on the winning side of a 4-1 vote to roll back those benefits.
Hall’s parting shot was self-serving and unnecessary, unless, of course, you’re running for mayor as the incumbent’s clone.
The new contract reduces benefits for new hires, requires current employees to increase their contribution to the state’s pension fund from 1 percent to 9 percent of annual salary and rejects a request for a 5 percent salary increase to partially offset that pay cut.
The council has been praised for saving the city from bankruptcy and showing leadership for other cities to emulate. But a closer look suggests city officials were motivated more by payback than prudence.

Carlsbadistan police and firefighters are becoming famous nationwide in the debate over how much public employees should be making. While we’re perfectly happy with teachers, policemen, and fireman making six-figures it appears that many people, like Forbes.com blogger Rich Karlgaard, seem to think thank is a problem.
Who are America’s fastest-growing class of millionaires? They are police officers, firefighters, teachers and federal bureaucrats who, unless things change drastically, will be paid something near their full salaries every year–until death–after retiring in their mid-50s. That is equivalent to a retirement sum worth millions of dollars.
Hey, maybe California is finally doing something right. Karlgaard quoted a story in the North County Times on how much Carlsbadistan’s police and firefighters make. Truthfully, the best way to get the best people for the job is to pay them well. We really don’t want to be pulled over by police officers who have to work two jobs to make ends meet. Seriously.
