North County Times Says Hurray For Lowe’s

by The Editors on July 9, 2010

LowesHere’s a shocker. The North County Times “opinion staff” is all in favor of one of their advertisers opening a 153,974 square foot big box home store in Carlsbadistan.

That’s why they’ve written an editorial congratulating the Carlsbad Planning Commission for giving “initial approval” to the Sudberry Development company, for a “153,974-square-foot Lowe’s home improvement store, a gas station, food court and small bank” in the hole on the Southwest corner of El Camino Real and Palomar Airport Rd. Yes, it is a lot that once was home to the Olympic Resort.

While we generally agree that attracting high-tech industrial, engineering and biotech companies ought to be the priority, we recognize the role that retail and like commercial services have for both nearby workers and residents,” the paper said.

Personally, we’d rather travel to the Lowe’s big enough boxes in Oceanside or Vista and keep Carlsbadistan free of big-box blight.

Teens Learn To Stomp Boxes At MofMM

by The Editors on July 8, 2010

TeenworkshopWe’ve all known that the secret to great guitar playing is the having the right filter. We’ve never had the right filter, but now thanks to the Museum of Making Music Carlsbadistan’s teen guitarist will have the chance to learn it all from Joe Bigham on July 17, during the Get your Signature Sound teen workshop.

Students will experiment with stompboxes to learn how to manipulate sound through pedals and guitar techniques. Students will learn how to order, combine, and control multiple effects in traditional and unique ways. This workshop will give young musicians ideas and techniques to identify the sounds of artists they admire, and craft their own signature sound.

Maybe we’ll finally learn that solo part from Boston’s More Than A Feeling. . . wait, did they say “teen workshop?”

Class begins July 17, 2010 at 2 PM and costs $15 ($10 for members). All participants get a free “Art of the Stompbox” poster. Sign up now. Click the link.

Appy Entertainment Releases Two More

by The Editors on July 8, 2010

MmpromicepieceiphoneCarlsbadistan based iPhone applications developers Appy Entertainment have released two new apps especially for Apple’s new iPhone 4. They’re not games. And they’re not all that complicated. But they work.

First up is MakeUp Mirror. The app that uses the front-facing camera to turn the iPhone into a mirror:

This little app simply harnesses the iPhone 4’s front-facing camera to position a live video image of your face inside a tasteful mirror frame on your iPhone 4.

The second uses the iPhone 4’s new camera flash as a “flashlight” get it? It’s called BrightLight. Being people who continually leave the lights off and stumble around by the light of our iPhones, this app may prove useful as we’ve been running into things lately.
