Anyone who has viewed the film Your Friends & Neighbors knows that playwright, screenwriter, and director Neil LaBute has a way of uncovering the dark, deeply disturbing realities of everyday life in shockingly benign ways. His film Nurse Betty could be one of the most uncomfortable two hours we’ve ever spent in a movie theatre. That’s exactly why we are particularly interested in seeing the Carlsbad Playreaders perform LaBute’s play The Shape of Things September 17 at 7:30 in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library at 1775 Dove Lane.
“The Shape of Things” is Neil LaBute’s take on modern dating, filled with witty dialogue, humor, and naughty and nice relationships. As with most LaBute, he digs deeper than the surface with shocking results. Set on a college campus, Adam meets Evelyn, and he aims to please, inspiring dread and delight in his friends, Phillip and Jenny. Contemporary language and a not-to-be-missed ending! For mature audiences.
The performance is free and there are no advance reservations, however donations of $5 for adults and $1 for students is taken at the door. Follow the jump for all the details.

Carlsbad Playreaders:
Carlsbad Playreaders was founded in 1995 by husband and wife team Pat and Jim Hansen. Over the past 12 years more than 90 play readings have been presented to almost 9,000 people. The Playreaders volunteer board of directors includes Bobbie Hoder, Jack Missett and Jessica Padilla.
Playreading is storytelling at its most imaginative. Actors collectively tell the story of the play without scenery, props, or
costumes, engaging the audience as full participants who must use their imaginations to create the entire physical production.
Carlsbad Playreaders is an official Carlsbad City Library event made possible in part by support from the Cultural Arts Office, The City of Carlsbad.
