Win Marks 9th National Title for Acclaimed Carlsbad High Team

Carlsbad, CA … The Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers varsity dance team won first place in Varsity Hip Hop in front of 10,000 spectators at the National Dance Team Championships held February 4-5, 2012 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

This win by the Lancer Dancers marks the 9th National Title and the second back-to-back Championship win for the acclaimed Carlsbad Varsity Team. Before these back-to-back wins, Carlsbad hadn’t won a National Title since 2007. For the past two years the team has been coached by former Lancer Dancer Laura Nares. She notes, “The road to the Championship is long and challenging. Thousands of varsity teams across the country compete to qualify for the national competition by winning regional and state competitions throughout the season. Several hundred varsity teams make it to the national event.”

“After the team danced at finals, I was thrilled! They came out with such intensity and left it all on the dance floor!” said Laura. Team captain, Camille Posard, states, “We were fighting hard to defend our Championship Title and the competition was extremely tough. All those hours of practice, rehearsals, and sacrifices culminated minutes before the Finals. During our pep-talk we all had tears in our eyes and a roaring fire lit inside” explains Camille.

The hard work and training are just part of the equation, it also takes a lot of fundraising to pay for the costs of travel, competition, costumes, and choreography.

“Earning your spot at nationals while maintaining your grades, is just part of the challenge, the other is fund-raising to get us there. We couldn’t do it without the support of our amazing community and our National Sponsor, Jazzercise.” said Team Captain Camille Posard who maintains a 4.2 GPA.

It’s not easy for Carlsbad, as many top caliber teams at Nationals come from private schools that are able to scholarship talented dancers and recruit from large geographic areas. As a public school facing tough economic times the Lancer Dancers can only take students enrolled at Carlsbad High School and must hold multiple fund raisers to get the team to the competition.

The Lancer Dancers are planning their next fund raiser already, a weekend dance clinic aimed to inspire younger dancers to begin their road to a Championship on or off the dance floor and a Junior Lancer Dancer Summer Camp. For more information please go to LancerDancers.com
