by The Editors on June 1, 2012

New Trash Carts-CThe Carlsbadistan trash removal experts at Waste Management will deliver new roller-wheeled trash carts to residents beginning June 4, 2012 on regular trash days.

Under the new automated trash collection system, residents will use wheeled carts with attached lids instead of trash cans and recycling crates. Specially designed trucks will pick up the new carts automatically with a hydraulic arm instead of Waste Management employees manually picking them up. . . . Once residents receive their new carts, they should start using them immediately. Waste Management will go through each neighborhood and collect unwanted trash cans and recycling crates the week following delivery of the new carts. Residents will be given yellow “take me” stickers when they receive their new carts. For collection of unwanted trash cans, residents can place the stickers onto their old, unwanted cans and place them at the curb on pick up day.

Getting rid of old trash cans and crates
Once residents receive their new carts, they should start using them immediately. Waste Management will go through each neighborhood and collect unwanted trash cans and recycling crates the week following delivery of the new carts. Residents will be given yellow “take me” stickers when they receive their new carts. For collection of unwanted trash cans, residents can place the stickers onto their old, unwanted cans and place them at the curb on pick up day. These special stickers will not be needed to collect unwanted recycle crates. Those can be placed at the curb the week following the delivery of the new automated carts. Residents can also drop off their unwanted cans and crates at Waste Management, 5960 El Camino Real, from June 11 through July 13.

When new service starts
Once the new carts are delivered, Waste Management will no longer service trash or recycling from customer-owned trash cans, plastic bags, loose materials or crates. Although new trash rates will be effective July 1, the transition to the new service will take place throughout the month of June, as each neighborhood receives the new carts.

Under the new system, Waste Management asks residents to do the following:
Separate trash, recycling and green waste and place into the appropriate cart. All material must fit into the cart with the lid closed.
Roll carts out to the curb line by 6 a.m. and place with the handle facing away from the street.
Place carts a minimum of two feet from cars, mail boxes and other objects and one foot from other carts. Also make sure carts are out from under trees or any overhead items.

Cart exchanges
If residents want to change the number or size of their carts, they will be allowed to exchange each type of cart once during the first 90 days following the initial delivery date. After 90 days, one additional exchange can be made at no charge. Any exchanges after that will result in a $10 delivery charge.

To request an exchange, residents should contact Waste Management’s customer service center by phone or email (866-WM RECYCLE or 760-929-9400, or email at sdoccsr@wm.com). Exchanges of the carts will begin July 9, after all carts have been delivered citywide. Do not place “take me” stickers on new carts.

Residents who did not specify the number and size of carts they wanted will automatically receive one 96-gallon cart for trash, one for recycling and one for green waste. Residents who live in homeowner’s associations or complexes that did not specify the number and size of carts they wanted will automatically receive one 64-gallon trash and one 64-gallon recycling cart each. These can be exchanged if needed.

So we get lower quality service–no more trash bags or broken down boxes left on the curb and we get to pay a higher price with more restrictions? Your government at work for you!

Always somebody complaining. Craig, there are so many reasons the new collection system is better–environmentally, economically, aesthetically, etc.– But the two examples you gave–no more trash bags on the curb and broken down boxes–are just two examples of how this system is better. Trash bags on the curb are ugly and crows get into them, spreading filth everywhere. Just put the trash bags and boxes in the containers! DUH! Complainers!

This was rolled out in February in Oceanside. It is great. No more lids and tipped over cans in the street after pick-up. We end up recycling so much more because the medium bin is so big it fits even the largest flattened boxes and we only have a big trash bag full of “trash” trash, we sized down to the small bin, saving our household money (4 adults and 1 kid).

The big bins seem to suit the needs of the neighbors better. Sometimes there were 1/2 a dozen cans outside some homes and now all their trash is neatly wrangled in a trash can and two recycle bins.

When Oceanside started the universal green waste collection I thought it was the best thing ever, but now that we’ve had our new bins for a while I am even happier. The thing I love most is no sorting of the recyclables. All my junk mail and steel cans and cosmetic bottles get tossed in and voilà, I’m recycling!

Plus- WM still does their twice annual large item pickup on scheduled days and you can call up to 4 or 5 times a year and they will get the large items from you the next day. I have been a customer for a long time and have always had excellent service, they do a great job.

In the first few weeks of service they have managed to not deliver the trash cans I ordered and will not replace them with the correct ones until July 10th, they forgot to pick up the recycling container this week and they only scheduled one day where they will pick up old trash cans (so there are old trash cans with “TAKE ME” stickers on them all over our neighborhood)… Great start Waste Management!
