When China Meets Latin America Music

The Carlsbad Music Festival is presenting a free event Tuesday, May 13, 2014 featuring internationally renowned pipa player and Carlsbad resident Wu Man and Son de San Diego.

Part of the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst Fund, the project explores cross-cultural exchanges between Chinese and Latin American plucking instruments, resulting in a musical dialogue between these two diverse communities. Through rehearsals, workshops, and performances, Wu Man and Son de San Diego discover and share the unique collaboration they have forged between the musical traditions of China and Latin America. . . “We have found common ground in love songs, silvery dawns, birdsongs, broken hearts, tales of sailing, and the sheer joy of dancing,” Eduardo Garcia, from Son de San Diego, explains. “This has proven to me once more the universality without borders that music is.”

The event begins at 7:30 PM on May 13, 2014 and will last one-hour at St. Michael’s by the Sea in Carlsbad, California. This residency has been made possible through the prestigious grant as part of the San Diego Foundation’s Creative Catalyst Fund – Individual Artist Fellowship Program awarded to Wu Man by the San Diego Charitable Foundation.

The May 13 event will last one-hour, and will take place in the sanctuary of St. Michael’s by the Sea in Carlsbad, California. Wu Man will additionally appear at the San Diego Foundation on May 14, and as a featured artist at the June Village Music Walk presented by the Carlsbad Music Festival.

Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, Grammy Award nominated musician Wu Man has carved out a career as a composer, soloist, and educator giving her lute-like instrument – which has a history of two thousand years in China – a new role in both traditional and contemporary music. About Son de San Diego
Son de San Diego plays music from the southern region of Veracruz state in Mexico known as Son Jarocho. They use traditional string instruments (jarana, guitar de son and tarima). The best-known song from this tradition is “La Bamba.”
