For the past two years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad California has been making sure the young members of its community stay safe when in and around water.

Among children under 15, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths. In Carlsbad, there are many children who live within a mile of the ocean but do not know how to swim.

“As a member of the Carlsbad community, the Boys & Girls Club recognizes the importance of water safety classes for youth, and we are fortunate to offer these classes regardless of a family’s financial situation,” said Aquatics Coordinator Laura Smith. “This is an important life skill, and I feel fortunate that I can be a part of a program that fosters continued development of water skills and confidence.”

The Club is currently looking for a sponsor to continue this important program. In the past funding for this free program was provided by LA84, Toyota Carlsbad, and the Sempra Energy Giving Fund. For more information, please follow the jump.FREE WATER SAFETY CLASSES OFFERED TO LOW INCOME YOUTH

Classes are offered Monday through Friday, with each day featuring a different swim level so students can progress with their skills. The majority of the students live within walking distance of the Village Clubhouse pool, and many parents have learned how to swim along with their children.

“When I first started lessons two years ago, I was afraid to lift my feet off the pool floor,” said 14 year old Johanna. “Now I’m one of the best swimmers in the intermediate class, and I look forward to our swim competitions!”

In addition to the no cost swim lessons, the Club also offers low-cost lessons. For more information, please contact Aquatics Coordinator Laura Smith at (760) 585-9074 or visit www.bgccarlsbad.org.
