Fans of Spirito’s Restaurant & Pizzeria (formerly in the Village Faire) can rejoice as the restaurant (and it’s delicious menu) have returned to Carlsbad. In January Mike Spirto opened the restaurant in the Von’s Shopping Plaza at 2560 El Camino Real next to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.
Currently Spirito’s is running on word of mouth as Mike and his team get the place going, but from what we saw, the locals are glad they’re back. It’s mostly take-out with a few tables inside for dine in, but there is plenty of food, reasonable prices, nice people. A local tradition that’s good to have back.
If he offers the same lackluster customer service, who cares? The menu at Gregorios, the restaurant in the original Spiritos location, is the same as the old Spiritos one, but the people that work there are actually aware that the customers are what keep them in business. My daughter and I used to have lunch at Spiritos weekly, and our family would eat dinner there several times a month. Not once did the owner ever come to the table to ask how things were. Once, we were there with friends, and the server forgot to charge us for a second bottle of wine. When my friend took the bill in to show the owner, he took it from him, added the cost of the wine and handed it back! Not a word about being honest, or a dessert sent to the table–just the check with the wine added! What a schmuck! We stopped going there for a few years, and when we read there was a new owner, but the same menu, we happily headed back.
Bad word of mouth definitely spreads faster than good. I give him credit for bringing decent east coast pizza to Carlsbad, but the man should stay far, far away from the place if he wants it to be a success!
Wow, Mary, hanging on to that grudge.
We ate at the new Spirito’s with the family and the owner brought us our food himself, was personable the whole time we were there and seemed genuinely friendly. More importantly to me, the food was great and the prices right. I think we will be more likely to get it as take out next time, and there definitely will be a next time.
We’re glad they are back in Carlsbad!
Hey, Mary who is the schmuck, perhaps it is you. The original owner at Spiritos was always personable and very friendly. He was the cook and owner so he probably did not have the time to talk to you personally. Let’s not be so entitled. However when I went out of my way to have a conversation with him he was always very personable. When he left and Gregorias opened they continued with the same food however the prices went way up and the owner by the way does not work there. It is still a nice restaurant and we still go there but the prices are way too high. We were delighted that Mike Spiritos opened a new restaurant with same great food and the same old much more reasonable prices.
Yay for Spiritos–I only trust Chick-Parm pizza in the hands of it’s creator! Mary, who are you to think you should be rewarded with free things for being honest? Shouldn’t the reward for being honest lie within you for being a stand up person? Seriously, you are the schmuck.
Not to get too personal, but I know Mike Spirito, and he’s a totally dedicated Carlbadistaner, a genuine family man, and makes the best pizza I have ever had.
I’m not sure what Mary knows about running a restaurant, but Spirito’s, old or new, is not run by schmucks.
I moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia and I have to say that the Gorgonzola cheese pizza is some of the best oizza I have had out west. Now that I now where to find Spirito’s, I will be going there tonite!
