Happy 10th Birthday Legoland

Lego Bday

There’s nothing that makes us feel older than realizing the theme park we voted against has been in Carlsbadistan for 10 years already. March 20, 2009 was Legoland California’s official 10th Birthday in Carlsbadistan and while we may disagree with some of their recent expansion plans we have been amazingly surprised by what good neighbors they have been for the past decade. The place is virtually invisible and we like it that way.

Yesterday, in a private after-hours birthday party (which we were not invited to) workers busted out a 10-foot-tall birthday cake made entirely of cake and frosting. . . gotcha. No, the cake was not-surprisingly made entirely of Legos.

The model took 13 model builders weeks to create and features LEGO replicas of some of the Park’s most popular attractions sitting atop five tiers. Some of the models are animated including a moving pirate ship, turning dinosaur head, and illuminated candles. Guests can marvel at the giant LEGO birthday cake all summer long and view birthday-themed fireworks every Saturday.

Happy 10th Birthday Legoland. Don’t change a thing.
CARLSBAD, Calif. (March 20, 2009) – Today is LEGOLAND® California’s 10th birthday and there is a lot to celebrate! The family theme park in Carlsbad unveiled the world’s largest LEGO®birthday cake; launched the new Bob the Builder™ 4-D movie “Bob the Builder and the Roller Coaster”; announced the winners of the “10 Years of Fun” Building Contest; and announced a new attraction opening in Land of Adventure this summer – Dune Raiders.

In a ceremony held during a private after-hours birthday party, LEGOLAND stunned guests with the unveiling of a 10-foot-tall, 5½ -foot-wide, birthday cake made of 100,000 LEGO bricks.

Starting today, the new Bob the Builder 4-D movie runs several times daily in the LEGO Show Place Theater. In the movie, Bob the Builder and his Can-Do Crew demonstrate teamwork and follow-through as they learn the importance of starting each building project with a plan. The 10-minute film uses 3-D computer generated animation with special effects such as wind and mist for a 4-D experience. “Bob the Builder and the Roller Coaster” is exclusive to LEGOLAND® family theme parks worldwide.

The winners of the “10 Years of Fun” Building Contest include six-year-old Kevin Miura from Irvine, California in the 4 to 9 age category; his dad Eiji Miura in the 16 and up category; and 12-year-old Calvin Iba from Lake Forest, California. The contest challenged LEGOLAND lovers to build their own LEGO tribute in honor of the Park’s 10th birthday. These models were chosen from hundreds of contest entries received from as far away as New Jersey. Each winner received a prize package including a family four-pack of annual LEGOLAND California Resort passes with unlimited admission to LEGOLAND California and SEA LIFE™ Aquarium for one year and one free ice cream treat from Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream each month for one full year.

LEGOLAND California also announced today the addition of a fifth attraction to Land of Adventure – Dune Raiders, an Egyptian bazaar-themed six-lane slide opening this summer just in time for 4th of July. This heavily-themed attraction is the ultimate slide experience featuring interactive LEGO scenes and stands nearly 30 feet tall.

LEGOLAND California opened on March 20, 1999 in Carlsbad, California. Since then, the interactive family theme park, which is geared towards children ages 2 to 12 has doubled its ride count and now boasts nearly 60 rides, shows and attractions. Voted Best Children’s Park five years in a row by “Amusement Today”, LEGOLAND continues to grow adding 14 new attractions in the last four years alone with more to come. Legoland has been doing a lot of great events this year especially the new Sea Life aquarium. I look forward to heading out there for the 10th anniversary birthday cake. I didn’t see them advertise this event very much. Have you ever stayed at the resorts near the amusement park? For out of towners, they are a great place to stay if they have kids and want to go to Legoland. I linked my name to the site where you can rent a room at these properties that are walking distance to Legoland or even have a private entrance. It’s going to be a great summer in Carlsbadistan!
