Brendan Sheppard-Missett At New Village Arts

by The Editors on May 12, 2009

Missett 1Brendan Sheppard Missett, the son of Jazzersize founder Judi Sheppard Missett, is kicking off his new collection of “new works and documentation of his latest installations” at The Paul Bartl Gallery at New Village Arts Theatre on May 21, 2009 with an artists reception and walkthrough on June 5, 2009 from 5:30 to 7 PM.

Brendan Sheppard-Missett’s sprawling, inviting, and highly-stylized installations often function much more like clubhouses than gallery/art shows and his use of material has a bag-of-tricks approach that proves narcotic. Whether you are standing next to a pile of bananas and pineapples under a neon sign that reads “No Warning–Free Fruit”, or you bump into a scraggly, Old West-style outlaw who raves and rambles about being from the future, the impact of Sheppard-Missett’s coltish magnum will reveal itself with an unusual frivolity.

The show opens in conjunction with the New Village Arts Theatre’s production of Four Dogs and a Bone by John Patrick Shanley. We’re not going to miss any of this.

Opening May 21, 2009, the exhibition runs through June 19. An artist’s reception and walkthrough will be held on June 5 from 5:30–7 p.m. in conjunction with the opening of the New Village Arts Theatre production of Four Dogs and a Bone by John Patrick Shanley. A graduate of the esteemed Chicago Art Institute, the heart of Brendan Sheppard-Missett’s work is revealed by the constant movement he experiences, having spent the past three years living between three major cities, driving to almost all 50 states and making as much time for adventure as possible.

He has read Four Dogs and a Bone, attended numerous NVA works, was partially raised in Carlsbad, used to buy wood for paintings at Bauer Lumber (the current location of NVA), and is an avid train-rider.

For this exhibition, Sheppard-Missett is showing a mix of new works and documentation of his latest installations in Joshua Tree, CA & Brooklyn, N.Y.

ABOUT THE GALLERY:

The Paul Bartl Gallery @ NVA was created in June of 2007 to act as a showcase for some of the most talented visual artists in the San Diego area – as the NVA stage is a showcase for the most talented actors, directors and theatrical designers. The gallery is designed to reflect the dynamic, thought-provoking professional qualities exemplified by the theatre work at New Village Arts. Named after a local businessman, artist and philanthropist born in the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia), the Gallery enhances the overall theatrical experience in a vibrant showcase for contemporary art.

ABOUT NEW VILLAGE ARTS:

New Village Arts Theatre was founded in April 2001 by graduates of New York’s Actors Studio Drama School and is now in its eighth season of producing award-winning, critically acclaimed theatre in North County San Diego. New Village Arts opened their new theatrical space and art gallery in the heart of the Village of Carlsbad in June of 2007. The final production of Season 8, Four Dogs and a Bone by John Patrick Shanley, will be performed in the theatre from June 4 through June 28.

“…who raves and rambles about being from the future…”
