The 2009 Carlsbad Music Festival

Musicfestival09Classical music on the cutting edge returns to Carlsbadistan for its sixth season September 25-27, 2009 as the Carlsbad Music Festival takes over the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium in the Carlsbad City Library Complex.

This year’s buoyantly creative program features the Festival’s founding ensemble the Calder Quartet, famed composer/guitarist Fred Frith, California EAR Unit, and five young prize winners in the Festival’s annual International Composers Competition. All Festival events – concerts, workshops, school programs and meet-the-artists receptions – are guided by Founding Artistic Director and Carlsbad native Matthew McBane. The Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office is a presenting partner of the Festival, which is also made possible in part by the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation’s Robert H. Gartner Cultural Endowment Fund.

Tickets for all concerts are $25 for priority seating, $15 for general admission, $8 for students (at door), and can be purchased through www.carlsbadmusicfestival.org.

The sixth annual Carlsbad Music Festival provides unique contemporary chamber music by world-class young and master musicians premiering works commissioned by the Festival by young composers from across the country and performing repertoire with a focus on the rich innovative tradition of California composers. Concerts are held in the intimate 220-seat Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium n the Carlsbad City Library Complex. Praise by local and national media includes a 2008 rave review in the Los Angeles Times citing its “magnificently enlightening programming,” a feature in LA Weekly, discussions on NPR stations in San Diego, Los Angeles and New York, and seven articles each in the Union-Tribune, and North County Times. The dean of American music reviewers, Alan Rich wrote, “Carlsbad Fest Defies Convention.”
