After having found out just how hard it was to raise funds for their trip to the US National Championships in Orlando, Florida, the Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers decided to do something to help others who are short on funds. They organized a a school wide holiday soup drive to benefit The Angel’s Depot, a service that provides “food-for-a-week” boxes to seniors who live on less than $950 a month

“Every student at CHS has English, so we put bins in all the English Classrooms to get the entire high school involved and make it easy for teens to donate food. We might just be teens, but we are a school of 3,000 teens and together we can make a difference”, said team member, Camille Posard.

Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, hold Food Drive

The Carlsbad Lancer Dancers have been working diligently to prepare for the US National Championships, in Orlando Florida taking place in just a couple months. Not only does the Carlsbad Varsity Dance Team need to be prepared to compete with costumes and choreography, but they also need to raise enough money to get them there. That has kept the 11 member team very busy and working hard especially in this economy. The Lancer Dancers have had a first hand economics lesson as they try to fundraise during this recession. When the teens saw how much harder was to raise the funds they need to get to the championships, they started thinking about the other people in their community who have been affected. They found out that in their own area many seniors in the community who are on fixed incomes have been hard hit by the current economic crisis.

The girls decided to take time out from their preparations for nationals and make a difference for these seniors in their community. The Carlsbad Lancer Dancers organized a school wide holiday soup drive, going on now, to benefit The Angel’s Depot. Lancer Dancer Captain, Rylee Blair said,” This food drive is going to provide food boxes to the seniors who need it most”. The dance team coordinated bins to collect the food at Carlsbad High School. “Every student at CHS has English, so we put bins in all the English Classrooms to get the entire high school involved and make it easy for teens to donate food. We might just be teens, but we are a school of 3,000 teens and together we can make a difference”, said team member, Camille Posard. The Angel’s Depot provides “food-for-a-week” boxes to seniors who live on less than $950 a month. Hearing stories about the seniors in need deeply affected the girls. Dancer, Lani Yamanaka said, “Some of these seniors are veterans and former educators, now they live in poverty. Our team strongly felt we should give back to these people who have given so much service to our community.”

With just three months until the national championships the Lancer Dancer are also preparing for their next fundraiser, The Lancer Dancer Showcase. Four performances are held December 16-18th at the Carlsbad Community Arts Center and tickets are $10.

The food drive is going on now at Carlsbad High School anyone interested can drop off food at Carlsbad High School or for more information contact the Lancer Dancer Boosters at LisaPosard@yahoo.com.
