North Coast Photo Is A Winner

by The Editors on August 6, 2007

NcpWhen North Coast Photo founder Richard Shute used his Mastercard on a $22 purchase, he didn’t know that it would win him $100,000 in a national sweepstakes promotion by MasterCard called “Run Your Business, Run Your Life,” but he knew exactly what he would do with the money: complete a $250,000 remodel on the North County’s (and Carlsbad’s) “oldest and largest” specialty photo developing lab. The rest of the story after the jump.

North County Business Completes Major $250,000 Remodel

Carlsbad, CA; August 2, 2007 -North Coast Photo, North County’s oldest and largest specialty photo developing lab, recently added an 800-square-foot studio space, expanded its multiple public workstations, and invested in upgrades to its $1.2 million in top-of-the-line photo development equipment. The evolution from a two-person, 400-square-foot facility to a 30,000-square-foot building with editing stations for customers to Photoshop their own photographs comes from adapting to the ever-changing printing needs of customers.

“Since 1978, my goal has been to provide quality photo services to professionals, amateurs, and non-professionals,” commented owner Richard H. Shute. “Technology has changed our business slightly, but people still want those quality hard copies of prints to share with friends over coffee and not everyone has software at home to sharpen up images. The major renovation makes studio space, editing software, printing and framing available to customers all in one space.”

Lyra Research forecasts that revenue from photo prints captured with digital cameras will increase to $15.1 billion in 2008 from $6.6 billion in 2002 and more digital prints are being printed. Consumers are printing more pictures at home, via online photo-printing services and at photo processing centers like North Coast Photo. Bonnie Buchman, manager at North Coast Photo, comments that “printing photos at home is time-consuming and actually expensive with ink cartridges and paper. Plus, the quality is not even close to that of our professional equipment. Our customers just upload files to our website and drop by two hours later to pick up perfect prints for under a quarter each.”

Professional photographers in the region such as surf photography legend Leroy Grannis and Carlsbad professional photographer Jerry Bryan choose North Coast Photo for their professional work and commercial prints because of its equipment to produce the best color match using archival photographic paper for long-lasting use.
